This was my first star trek episode so I dont have an idea of what star trek should be and I enjoyed it for what it was. A few cool moments and a good set up.

Right, I got a message from Netflix saying that this is a show I should like. But I've heard next to nothing about it, and what I have heard has generally not been amazingly positive. I haven't watched any Star Trek before, but I know the very basic ideas behind it. Guess I'll follow Meerkat and just watch and see how I find it.

Action, explosions, space battles, drama are all present in adequately satisfying quality and quantity. So fans of sci-fi in general will probably enjoy it. I enjoyed it about as much as I enjoyed the JJ-verse movies.

My only real beef with it is as a fan of TV Trek, in that it feels very little like any previous Trek series.

    Yea. Sorry.

About ST: I wish they would come up with something besides a half Vulcan losing control of their emotions because of their human side. It worked as a quick hand wave for that action flick like the movie verse but not as a base for entire series

It's too shiny and Abrams-y. And I can't understand the uniforms. They should have picked up after Enterprise and told the story properly.

I reeeeallly like it. I'm super glad that it's on Netflix too. At least in Australia/New Zealand.

Made me tear up a few times. Everything looks awesome and the acting was stellar.

I enjoyed the production values. Can't say anything about the plot yet as we haven't even seen the real show but just the pretext. So giving some opinion about characters now is a bit pointless.

But what I truly enjoy is the whining of the Star Trek fanboys on imdb. It's so delicious hearing them squeal about it not to be like ST(whatever that truly means) because they dared to poke holes into this utopian collective of dullness which infected ST in TNG/Voyager and a lot movies.

Let it rain death and destruction. Exploring space is no risk free virtual simulation:)

No actual Trekkie would say Trek is non-violent. Crewman #6s die horribly in almost every other episode, no matter what series you pick.

I really enjoyed this. The conflict in Michel Burnham was well played as was the whole stand off with the Klingons.

The action was brilliant, the cinematography, stunning and the writing crisp and refreshing compared to other incarnations of the show.

It's fresh but it's oh so Trekky.

Let's be real, a new show was never going to be immediately lived by hardcore fans because new things aren't allowed to be cool.

I'm interested to know what in it you found to be "Trekky", as I myself was really stretching to find comparisons.

The raport between Burnham and Georgiou vaguely reminds me of a Riker/Picard dynamic, emphasis on the vaguely. Also, the approach to the conflict with the Klingons is very DS9. But apart from that.... I don't really see much influence.

The style and setting is out of whack with the other series. We've exchanged the art deco minimalism from the majority of the shows for shiny high-tech interiors and lots of metallic color schemes. I was really hoping they would try and bridge the stylistic gap between Enterprise's astronaut chic and TOS's 60s vibe. But alas, no.

The technical dialogue was very nonTrekky. They've clearly decided to dump all the make-believe jargon and go for realism.

Humor is a huge part of Trek, and this was almost totally lacking. I think there was one part where Helmsman #6 is doing a flight attendant bit that was almost approaching comedy... but yeah. Severely unfunny.

Thematically... it was very hardline militaty sci-fi, something that Roddenberry expressly attempted to avoid when making Trek. That sense of whimsy and wide-eyed idealism was noticibly absent save for Georgiou's speech to Burnham about hope.

I don't grasp your style concerns at all, KHAAAAAAAN!!

You say "Art Deco minimalism" as if it's a theme but in reality each series looked like an approximation of what budgets at the time and styles at the time were. TOS is sixties from dress sense to colourful knobs, TNG is late 80s from the long sloping beige panels to the shoulder padded uniforms with an abundance of electric colours melded with pastels in the background.

DS9 was just all around dark and supposed to give off a decidedly more alien feel. Voyager and Enterprise were similarly era suited.

This is 2017 and the budget allows for Hella bells and whistles.

This sounds like a TOS fan watching TNG for the first time and saying, "This isn't MY Star Trek. MY Star Trek doesn't have touch screens."

I think the show looks beautiful.

You make it sound like I'm some whining fan boy, harping on miniscule details as a reason to shit on something. I'm not. At all. Although the style isn't derivative of the adjacent eras, I don't really mind the high tech changes. I'm just saying that it's vastly different from the other series, which is why I noted that as a point of disjoint in my comparison.

By art deco minimalism I was refering to the similar design schemes for Federation stuff in TNG, Voyager and DS9. Even DS9's cardassian locales were reminiscent of that design, but edgier and darker. Enterprise was all blue jumpsuits and storage cubbies, meant to be a bridge between current space travel designs and Trek. TOS is spacey 60s.

This show's style and level of tech doesn't fit between Enterprise and TOS. That's all I was really saying.

So again, I ask what you find to be "Trekky" (aka what about it makes you think of the previous series)?

If you can't explain it and it's more a gut reaction, that's fine, but I'm genuinely interested. Not looking for an argument.

I liked it, for what it was anyway. Not really much of a way of judging it yet since all we have seen is setup. the visual style is nice and the new uniforms I think look good.

Our new protagonist is compelling even though it seems she made a string of dumbass decisions in this first set of episodes. But then that is kind of the point isn't it? In most shows when the protagonist disobeys orders to explore/save the day etc, she succeeds because she is the hero and therefore right. So it does not matter what the consequences would have been if she had failed. Comes up over and over and Star Trek is plenty guilty of it. Its pretty nice so see her play hero only to be smacked with the actual long-term consequences of her cowboy shit going tits up, even if she only unwittingly set Klingon-ISIS's plans in motion.

I'll reserve judgment for the actual show till I see how this set-up actually plays into the real show and ho the events of this staring point effects her character, which I believe picks several years and half a prison sentence later. Hopefully they wont have the other characters continually scapegoating her part in the start of the war so she ends up this martyred angst-ridden character.

The next episode preview, and the sneak-peek clip with Anthony Rapp's scientist char, both indicate that she'll be labeled the mutineer who started the war with the Klingons, and thus basically becomes an outcast on the new ship. That said, if the writers know what they're doing, being behaviorally Vulcan should prevent her descent into angstville.

Seeing the premier episodes just made me wish for Enterprise not to have been canceled. And that's saying something. This reeks too much of Abrams.

There's a marathon of Voyager tonight on BBC America. That was real Star Trek.

I was watching it just a little while ago. Gotta love the few and far between 'Harry gets lucky' episodes.

Star Trek always had big-arc plots, but I like the fact that it was mostly built around the small stories of life exploring the galaxy, where you're not at war with the Klingons, you're just wrestling with how to tell Icheb that he might have to go back home to parents he doesn't remember. Or that your holodeck went haywire. Or the Doctor trying to learn opera. Etc.
