I found that one to be pretty mediocre.

Here is one of my personal favorites. RWBY on a mission find a portal. Yang leaps into it because possibly her mom or something. Anyway the team find themselves in the XCOM base. And eventually join up to defeat the aliens so they can return to Remnant.

Now for some reason most people hate the main design choice for this story. It isn't explained extremely well in story but anyway Team RWBY can't fully focus their aura. No forcefield no semblance. (They are still extremely fit and heal quickly.) While on earth.

It adds a lot of tension and is way more interesting than RWBY curbstomping the alien invasion in a week.

The team learn how horrible war is and it has a very interesting sequel about when they return to Remnant and how they are changed from their adventure.

Everything flows nicely and the characters grow as the story progresses. And eventually team JNPR joins them on earth.

Oh and the XCOM portion is based off of the long war mod.

It certainly was a fun read. And the sequel is still being updated. So it isn't seemingly dead like most of my favorites.

Here is the sequel since I nearly forgot

Also how many of you know the story of Bloodborne?

How the Blood turned people to beasts and the kin being from the moon or something.

Is it just me or does that have a shit tonne of potential for RWBY crossovers? Hell, what if the first hunters were Bloodborne hunters. One of them fight the moonbeast. kill it. The moon explodes. Moon fragments crashing to earth creates dust. The hunters start to wield that and slowly stop the practice of the old blood and learn to manipulate aura instead. Faunus are birthed from people creating harmony with their beastly nature. Explaining the weird canon biology of two different breeds of Faunus getting a completely random breed of Faunus. The transforming weapons. It all sorta works really well. Grimm could be the shadow or influence left behind by the kin and the moon beast.

So maybe What would happen if Weiss gained insight. And started to see the kin? What is Ruby could gather blood echoes from Grimm? What if Blake could at any moment possibly lose herself and succumb to being a Grimm? What if Yang stumbled upon the hunters dream? What if Gerhmen was Ozpin or another professor? There are so many possibilities to be had. And it all kinda makes sense. I can't be the first person to watch RWBY while playing way too much Bloodborne can I?

Any way I hope somebody takes off with these ideas. Someone could make something truly great.

"Best quest writer" is definitely an exaggeration, but the Ozpin quest is entertaining and TPK does well with it. Doesn't take itself very seriously which is its biggest strength.

It's tough when anybody talks about best quest writing when that Skyrim one exists. Easily my favorite anyway.

Title: Infighting, Insanity, and Social Ineptitude
    Author: Najio
    Rating: T
    Genre: Adventure/Friendship
    Status: WIP
    Fandom: RWBY
    Pairings: None
Summary: ...In which teams are shuffled; Ruby feels like a one-eyed king in a land where everyone else has two; Dove babysits three avatars of chaos and destruction; and Jaune just wants his team to stop arguing for ten consecutive minutes. [Updates Sundays]
    Link: ff.net, SB

This is a pretty solid and fun read that kinda caught me out of nowhere. The basic premise is that the teams CRDL, JNPR and RWBY are shuffled around, making three new teams with different character combinations. It also does the impressive thing of actually fleshing out Russel, Dove and Sky into actual humans with both, strengths and weaknesses but it does so in a way that actually still kinda fits in with what little we had of them in canon (mainly being the dumb bully team). It works because they still have those negative character traits where one feels that if they only had each other and Cardin in a team, they would resurface as that team once again, with them bringing out the worst in each other and encouring themselves in that direction.

The teams are rather interesting and the story makes an impressive attempt at giving everyone relatively equal screentime. While that means we do have a lot of characters to juggle (12), it kinda works because no one is ever really alone on screen and has at least one other character to interact with.

Everyone has their own struggles and distinct voice, the fight scenes are okay and the character interaction is what really makes this story.

Teams are as such, if you want to know before going in:

Team Ruby, Phyrra, Ren and Sky
Team Dove, Yang, Nora and Russel
Team Jaune, Cardin, Weiss and Blake

It makes for a rather engaging story with all the issues that come from this. Ruby deals with being separated fully from her sister and trying to juggle being leader and kinda coming into her own, as opposed to canon where she is still with Yang, which is similar to Yang who has to deal with being separated from Ruby in difficult missions. Phyrra is kinda trying to find a spot for herself and without Jaune to latch on to and mentor, she is kinda reserved and flaundering a bit. Similarly, Ren and Nora are dealing with their separation issues, having been really close for years and are trying to make friends.

The thing is, the first two teams are still well balanced and functional teams, where the mix up of personalities mesh reasonably well. The fun part is Team 3, which is a full blown disaster, where Jaune is made leader and he has to deal with three people who loathe each other and have zero respect for him. It's interesting that without Ruby and Yang there to mellow things out and stand as their equals, Weiss and Blake have a significantly harder time to bond. Cardin, until recent chapters, has been a solid dickbag still, though and is only recently getting some development.

What's interesting is that the White Fang and Torchwick stuff is still going on, and the teams are still interested in that but because Blake is on another team than Ruby, they don't know what the other knows so there are two separate investigations going on about that, with the Ruby and Dove team tackling things from the Torchwick side whereas Weiss and Blake are going after the White Fang.

So, the humor is good, character interaction is fun and interesting, writing is solid overall and the take on the characters is pretty good overall. It didn't blow me away like FDS did but this is still a really good story overall.

    4/5

Alright Nemrut, I will follow up your spoiler talk with a spoiler review of my own. Non-Spoiler review however? It reminds me a lot of the issues of alt-Taylor powers in Worm fanfiction. AKA, strong start, weak as hell followup.

I went into this thing hard. It started out exactly as you stated with being very engaging. Quick rundown on how I felt the teams started off. Ruby and her team worked out great in the start. Ruby was very awkward and without Yang it did feel painful. Phyrra also felt like she was struggling to be herself... screw it just read what you wrote again on this team, felt great.

Dove/Yang/Nora/Russel was a bit too boring overall. While I started to skim their sections, I didn't feel like I missed much. The only time they managed to interest me at all is when they were dealing with the other teams otherwise they just did 'wild and wacky' stuff.

The greatest part of this story in my eyes is how they handled Jaune/Weiss/Blake/Bully in the start. Jaune is a terrible leader for that team and the story showcased that perfectly. But for Jaune, they hated everyone else and the team was a failure. This is huge amounts of drama.

The issue with the story is how it follows up all this drama. This drama ended up leading to nothing. Ruby and Dove had their team ended up being too friendly towards each other. This still leaves Jaune and his trainwreck of a team.

I wanted to see them fail. I wanted to see Goodwitch break up this team as she stated would happen if they did not improve. Wiess was stressed beyond canon. Everyone on that team was stressed as well. It was prime to see the unimaginable happen, characters failing and dropping out of Beacon due to their own issues. Nope. Wiess and Blake ended up getting to be friends. While it wasn't handled in a completely impossible manner, it was done in the way to piss me off the most. Blake runs off and Wiess starts to give chase. Wiess finds Sun. Sun and Wiess go find Blake. They find Torchwick.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? WE HAD ALL THIS GREAT DRAMA AND THEN CANON. Bloody canon appears. All of this drama and it leads to the teams slowly being friends. Okay not impossible but if you are giving me a story about character developments why are you following the developments into canon while making the plot follow canon as well. There is no bloody logical reason for Ruby to find Penny or Wiess to find Sun in the same exact manner as canon. You can have the Torchwick robbing places as in canon because there is no reason for those details to change but you can't have random one off encounters happen multiple times in a row. Canon plot bores me as I've already seen it before. It needs something new. It started with something new but all the characters melded into canon.

After the story slowly comes to a boring canon state we have Sky. He ran away from a fight. (A canon fight ahhhh.) This could have been more interesting but that's all that happens. Sky ran away and soon after Sky is not being a coward anymore. Bit of drama but it lead to nothing. Yang did the expected thing and got pissed once she learned about that and messed with Sky. I wanted to see Ruby get pissed at Yang for interfering with her team. Bit more of a separation between Ruby and Yang. Technically that is what happens but in the end of that scene they forgive each other. Bit of drama lead to nothing.

Reading the lastest chapters is not acceptable in my eyes. It's canon with a slight twist. That's not interesting enough to keep a story going anymore. It's an alt-power Taylor in RWBY setting. Look at this interesting new start of a story. Look at all these crazy things that are happening. Oh wait canon is here nevermind.

Current state of the story is a 2/5 just because of how much it disappointed me.

    @SmileOfTheKill

Fair enough, although I will say that I didn't feel like it was shackled to canon the way Altpower Taylor fics generally are, rather that it mostly organically follows the canon plot points while still giving their own spin on them. I won't deny though that there were a few instances where things could have been handled better.

On the team absolute disaster failing and being expelled though, I can't help but feel like your own expectation set you up to fail there. I won't say that what you proposed wouldn't have been interesting but I dunno, I never really expected them to outright fail and that what happened would eventually happen and I was mostly satisfied with it.

I agree, some things though weren't followed up on as they should have. Sky got over his thing too soon and same seems to happen to Dove. Overall, I concur that those three guys aren't especially memorable or anything but then again, I never expected to care about them in the first place so I'll take what we got as a win.

I guess 4/5 was a bit high as far as ratings go and if I put a story up for review immediately after reading them, I tend to rate them higher than I would after some time has passed and I see how it stands up to time away from it.

I do think that the altpower Taylor criticism is way too harsh though.

I think it's a pretty great. He wrote another that I liked:

    https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/stairway-to-hell-rwby.546955/
Summary: This year, Beacon's practical final exam is more of a formality than anything else. Compared to the Breach, this test is a cakewalk. That is, until the twelve first years discover an anomaly in the woods and end up miles underground.

It's complete at 83k words, half the length of the other one. Has Sky, Pyrrha, and Blake as protagonists. Like Infighting, Insanity, and Social Ineptitude, it tries to make CRDL human and focuses on the interaction between the three teams. You get some action, then some drama, repeat.

It felt a bit like it dragged on a bit near the end but it's one of my favorite RWBY fanfics along with Insanity. I'd say if you didn't like how the characters were handled there, then you wouldn't like it in this one.

    @SmileOfTheKill
That's like saying you went to see a buddy cop film and were disappointed it wasn't The Wire.
The story is :- personal faults -> leads to conflict -> characters overcome those faults and grow.
It isn't a For Want of a Nail tale where massive changes happen to canon and the story goes completely off the rails, and the author never even hinted that it would ever turn out that way. You may hate this type of story but from the start it has been pretty clear that's what the author wants to write. So I felt that criticism was unwarranted.
Yeah, sometimes it felt the conflicts were resolved a bit too neatly but I was fine with that because it never felt the characters weren't actually being challenged.

I'd give both 4/5 but that doesn't mean much if you don't like the type of stories they are. If you go in with wrong expectations, you wouldn't like them very much.

I have to laugh about what you said because I'm in the same boat but on a reverse course. The 2/5 is harsh. I would agree with you about the 3/5 in the end. I was just too harsh for the same reason you were too nice, I was to in the moment of being annoyed at the recent canon developments.

For the the altpower Taylor, I will stand on that point. I'll just say it's closer to a good altpower Taylor instead of a bad one. Still a good story with an interesting idea to twist it, but doesn't go far enough from the original.

That's fair to say in general but as I stated to Nemrut, I will stand by my point, but with a bit more clarity as I plan to crosslink this to Spacebattles for general feedback.

I did and still do like this story. I plan to follow it up on FF.net because hell if I read something on SB if it is also on FF.net... but anyways.

I just feel like the story could have done more. It was perfectly willing to change the teams and have those changes matter. I've read alt-Ruby stories that do fit the bill as bad alt-Taylor Worm stories. An evil Ruby enters Beacon and is dark and edgy. Can she trust her acting and get the inside details? Oh wait RBWY fights Torchwick and canon happens the same as before with the team dynamic being the same. Borrring. This story wasn't that.

I don't know why I was so happy to see Ruby and Phyrra fight and trash team JCBW. It was just a completely new dynamic I haven't really seen but that got to me. Then all of that slowly stopped being a new dynamic and became a different dynamic. It's still good but nothing felt as unique as the start of the story. Jaune covering his ears while he struggled to sleep was a great contrast to the other teams. It was believable because Jaune does have a ton of leadership issues in the start of canon. I think I blamed the canon aspects more than I would normally just because it entered the story the exact time I knew for sure Jaune wouldn't have his team fail.

The very latest chapter is a good microcosm of the story right now. The first part with Jaune training with Phyrra feels overdone. It's good writing but it's not new. The middle part was was Team Dove being 'wacky' and I shrug. The last part however is new. Weiss has to deal with her father coming to Vale and now Blake is known to be a Fanus by quite a few people at this time. It's interesting to me.

Mostly canon, mostly fluff, then new and interesting stuff. That's this story now. It's good writing but I did enjoy this story a bit more when I thought it was going into a completely different direction. It was a bit unfair to blame the story for my own personal stupidity however.

I keep trying to find a single RWBY story that would raise my interest, but The Games We Play spoiled me so hard on this universe that virtually everything else is just boring trash with no creativity in comparison (not that there weren't some huge problems with Ryuugi's work, but the good things about this fic were just amazing).

Like, come on. Give me a single story with a truly interesting world and not just constant interpersonal drama. I've tried dozens and found nothing that comes close (except mayyybe Four Deadly Secrets and that W40k story, but the second one has very little to do with RWBY).

I rather enjoyed the Dissonance Trilogy (here's a link to story 1) and Requiem for Remnant as far as engaging/interesting world building and lore are concerned. They were both engaging in their own way, stoking my desires for a serious and decently written RWBY story. I haven't suggested them on here until now because I wasn't quite sure how they'd be received and because I have shit memory.

They aren't perfect by any means, but I'd say the Dissonance Trilogy averages at about a 3/5 (4/5 for me, due to personal taste) and though I haven't read Requiem for Remnant in a while, I would also give it an average between 3 and 4 out of five. I suppose I could make a thread for them For Review, but I think I'll wait.

Hope you all can get some enjoyment from them.

It's interesting how the first fic we read affects our taste for all subsequent stories. Like I began with Coeur's Professor Arc and since then I've basically only read Jaune-centric fics (confession of a Jaune fangay, right here).

Edit: Consider Belladonna Lilies. I've not tried it before, but it's highly rated, and it's radically AU - perfect if you're tired of the more exclusively emotion-and-character driven fics, which is kinda most of the good ones imo.

    Belladonna Lilies
In a gaslamp-fantasy Victorian era shaped by the discovery of Dust, two women's lives take on a collision course. Blake Belladonna, searching for her future, and Weiss Schnee, learning the meaning of her past, may find that each other holds the key to finding what truth exists within their web of duty, honor, and pride.

Belladonna Lilies is pretty damn solid in terms of writing. It doesn't really have much to do with RWBY, though.

Finally finished Infighting, Insanity, and Social Ineptitude, or at least what's been written thus far.

Completely rehashing canon is an issue a lot of RWBY fics have and its a legitimate one to criticize. The Buddy-Cop vs Wire counterargument is a dumb one. Criticizing Infighting, Insanity, and Social Ineptitude for being too much of a rehash isn't criticizing a horror movie for not being funny, it's criticizing a horror movie for being unoriginal and predictable. It's a criticism that can apply regardless of genre or authorial intent.

While obviously there can be carryover, if you're writing an Alternate Universe fic, you should have a truly Alternate Plot. Many AUs aren't really interested in that, they just care about their characters, and that can be okay. I do like a good character focused piece, but if you're going to have a plot don't just gimp Monty's. Make something that fits your fic and services your characters and the developments you care so much about.

IISI is certainly better than many of these fics at covering over this problem, and while that's a point in its favor, that doesn't stop the problem from being there.

Here's a running tally of thoughts I had while reading.

    Initiation
-So yeah, plotting here was basically: Partners Assemble -> Teams Assemble -> Wandering -> Grimm Encounter. As a basic structure? Yeah, fine enough. But seeing that play out in tandem three times is obnoxiously repetitive.
-I'm a little annoyed with how people were just kinda free to wander around looking for each other. You're in a forest of dangerous monster-grimm; there should be some urgency, not a walk in the park plus a random encounter; even with professors doing a culling ahead of time. My SOD can be a tank sometimes, so I'm kinda surprised this is bothering me.
-Pyrrha needing to find her spear was a nice motivation for why that group needs to wander, but it never went anywhere. All of a sudden everybody was back and they never found her javelin. That's what happened with all of them. They beat their Grimm and then BAM team BRYN's coming out of the showers. No resolution. Not even a "we give up, let's go home". Fucking really?
-The team dynamics are solid enough. RSPR is a whole bunch of awkward people. BRYN are lunatics with an obligatory straight man. ABSW hate each other. Author intended that and has set it up fine enough, but it's small compared to the larger issues here.
-Honestly, this is some 2.5 rounded down shit, because the author was obviously phoning it in and just wanted to get past this section ASAP. An obviously terrible idea, given that this is the beginning of your fic and ergo where you're most likely to lose people.

    First Impressions
-Character interactions are solid so far. ABSW is the highlight of the whole damn thing. Got some good character drama cooking there.
-The flow of the fight scenes so far needs work. I'm noticing some show and tell issues that could help. The writing definitely needs some focus. Actually this kinda applies to the whole piece, but fight scenes make it more noticeable.
-It's kinda refreshing to see a fic where Jaune's still pathetic. I can handle the ones that aren't, as long as they aren't done too badly, but it's a nice change of pace.
-As good a moment as "Pyrrha and Ruby wreck ABSW" was, apparently that was only two days in, which is a rather quick turnaround from ABSW getting formed to "you're not even as good as half a team". It's rushed. Getting the ugly worry that the author wanted to quickly establish the bottom so they could spin the "development" wheels. Not good. You need to earn that shit. Make it play out and explore it before running to resolution. Here's hoping.
-What kind of kiddie school is this with an 8PM curfew?
-Penny appears in one of those forced replicated random encounters mentioned earlier. Fine, throw her in the story, but maybe have her meet somebody besides Ruby? And have it play out differently too. A dynamic between her and BRNE or ABSW would be way more entertaining, and more importantly more original.
-Sun's random encounter feels really damn forced, but meeting with Weiss instead of Blake is at least different. I'm not feeling the dynamic between the two, but Sun suggesting they get a motel was funnier than it was probably meant to be.
-I'm starting to see some of the canon-bend with Torchwick. So far feel pretty eh about it. The RSPR fight was better, just for making the character moment with Sky being a coward. Blake/Weiss/Sun one not so much.
-First Impressions is still much better than the intro. Pretty lukewarm about the wrap up of it, but this is a solid piece worth reading, but there's still much more to the story. I maintain my fear of a "rush to development". We'll see how the peacemaking between Weiss and Blake goes, but so far it resolved itself annoyingly similarly to the show.

    Getting To Know You
-Nora and Yang think Dove has mild anti-faunus feelings. If this is true I fucking love it. Not endorsing racism or anything, but damn that's a good potential wrinkle to sort through. BRYN really doesn't have the development issues of the other two teams without this.
-The Torchwick plot really isn't grabbing me. Call it fatigue, call it canon-retread, call it whatever, there's just parts of this story that I'd rather read. I want the new stuff, rather than finding different ways of hitting the same points as canon. It's different, just not that different. It's a plotline generally devoid of suspense or engagement, and suffers accordingly.
-Seriously, this 8PM curfew is fucking dumb. I roll my eyes every time I see it.
-Impressive realization: Twenty chapters and counting and no pairings. Didn't think the fandom had it in them. Although we haven't hit the school dance yet so...
-Jaune's way of bringing Cardin to heel was actually pretty good. Cardin's still a douche, but this was a good way of handling it. Forcing Blake to reveal she's a faunus is a good new element to toss in. Keep the drama going as different parts close up. It's something the story can play with and make something out of.
-Okay. Arc over. I liked First Impressions better, mainly because the Torchwick plot was dominant here and just kinda bored me. There's no mystery, and there's not enough else attached to make it engaging despite that. Looks like we might be steering hard into social commentary with the faunus so... we'll see how that goes. I will say that the writing itself is improving nicely.
-Oh, and since it was a thing I said I'd look out for, the peacemaking between Blake and Weiss was total and immediate. Damn. There could be some residual racism - even if Weiss excludes Blake as a target of it - that could create friction. Maybe we'll get to it but I'm not getting my hopes up. The "rush to development" fear is proving valid, which sucks because that's where the best parts have been so far.

    Tensile Testing
-Hm. The way Dove's racism is written is pretty interesting. Like, it's bad, and rightfully recognized as bad, but he's not treated as an irredeemable character for it. It's a casual thing, rooted in ignorance rather than hate. Nuanced in a way you really wouldn't expect from a story on SB, even if you still have Cardin and ERMN being cunts. So points for that.
-Jaune training with Pyrrha, just like in canon. That's irksome. This "Blake is so obsessed with the White Fang that she's not taking care of herself" bit is also copied from canon, but it's Weiss trying to get through to her instead of Yang. I'm not all that interested in either.
-As much as the Torchwick arc was kindof a drag, this "reaction to a massive terrorist attack" arc looks more promising, but I'm not sure. Jacques showing up could go well... potentially. Tbd, but I'm hopeful.
-Continuation of White Fang stuff remains boring. I'm tending to skim here.
-Y'know, the forced Sun and Penny encounters are way more annoying now because they've since dropped out of the story completely. Like we checked in with Penny once so briefly and uselessly I think it was just to check a box. Their appearances were entirely unnecessary to this story other than because-canon.
-Jacques is here, and he's being a prick and stirring the pot. Excellent.
    -And so the pairing begins.

Overall, I do think this is a decent fic. The character interactions are good, as the rec stated. I don't think I'd say "this is a thing you should read" in general, but if somebody was looking for a RWBY fic that fit a criteria, and this matched up, then I'd toss up a link. But I really gotta echo Smile here, where the bend to canon is a major damper on this fic, as it got in the way of the parts I liked and the parts that would have Library potential. I'm looking for this story to explore the characters and the dynamics and issues set up, and for the plot to enable the exploration. The Torchwick/White Fang canon plot ain't really doing that.

Said character stuff also has a problem so far. Story is fucking great at establishing problems and character conflicts/flaws/other issues. Best part of the whole damn story. But the resolutions of those issues are all too quick and neat, which kinda sucks. People are messy. Character development should be as well, with major problems needing several breakthroughs before you get to the end, with hybrid states in between. I'm not saying the character focused parts of this story are bad (because they're not. They're pretty good), but the flaw is there. It's not an obstacle between okay and good, but instead between good and great.

If this story continues to devolve into "canon with a twist", then I will be very disappointed but not too surprised. I'm gonna try to follow this at least until the end of Tensile Testing, and we'll see from there. I have the unfortunate suspicion that the end of this fic will be yet another "the Vytal Festival disaster, but somehow everything goes way better". Until then, and as the original character drama continues to resolve, we'll see what else the author has in store.

I hope this story pulls everything off, but who knows.

I know some of you don't like Jaune fics, or Coeur, but I found his newest fic pretty brilliant, and enormously original - absolutely no stations of the canon at all.

Relic of the Future by Coeur Al'Aran
"Victory can prove bitter, especially when you're the only one alive to see it. With the world in chaos and everyone he ever loved dead, Jaune Arc makes a deal with the devil for one last chance to go back and change it all. But devils don't play by the same rules as humans, and Salem never did say how far back he'd go. Or how much deeper the war between her and Ozpin really went."
Jaune in the time of STRQ.
