So after a day of agonising over which set to get, mostly umming and erring about Helm's Deep, I finally decided on a combo of An Unexpected Gathering and Pirate Ship Ambush, which comes out (thanks to a deal on the pirate ship on Amazon) as £35 cheaper than Helm's Deep yet possessing between the two of them more bricks. Also it means I get Legolas.

My main regrets in not getting Helm's Deep are the grey bricks which are great for castle building and the Theoden minifigure, not to mention the fact that it's only going to increase in price from here on out. But oh well!

Maybe I'll talk myself into getting Orthanc next year XD

I tried to find every set that I own. This is including all the sets that that I inherited from my brother about ten years ago when he grew uninterested, which includes most of the late 80's early 90's sets I own (mostly blacktron, old space police, futuron, black knights and forestmen castle sets).

There's some margin of error. I couldn't find the exact number of sets where some appeared multiple time in the lists, and I'm sure I missed a few sets that I own and forgot about, or have 1 set that looks like two different ones. Most of these sets have been disassembled are in a couple of giant tupperware containers that have been in my basement for ten years. I also know there are a few sets that I couldn't find at all on the site.

Also, since I collect space ships (and apparently I don't nearly have as many as I thought... I'm missing a ton of star wars sets, since I don't really like the franchise)... This is my favorite space ship. It's a very slick looking fighter, and I own 4 (had two back in the day, bought 2 more a couple years back)

That... just might be the same for me, Kalas. I remember having that one, and it was as sweet as it looks on the image.

    Nobody does. :(

My collection. Or, at least, that's the stuff I know for sure that I have. I know I have a few of the small sets, here and there, that people have given me over the years, and I may have a few Dragon Masters sets I've forgotten about.

I guess I'll just update my collection if I dig up any of the unaccounted for stuff.

Yeah, the 1970's Fabuland sets would definitely date me, if my age weren't displayed here, anyway.

I haven't even listed my wanted sets, since it would be an embarrassing huge list. LEGO is an fucking expensive hobby... I will say this for them, though, they don't rot or discolor. If only all my old toys were made of the same stuff.

My Construx haven't fared as well.

About a year ago I bought on ebay some guy's old lego collection. Unfortunately, for me, most of those sets I already had/wasn't interested in, however there were a few pearls.

    ESSO Filling Station, (1956-1962)
No car or gas pumps (I'll pay dearly for that), but damn... That set is older than my father. Impressive.

    Church, (1957)
I'm not 100% sure if I actually have this one - after all that time I still haven't finished going through the box - but the remaining pieces strongly suggest, that I do.

I've got a box full of weird lego pieces, like plates with waffle bottom.

Lego pieces with patent pending sign (pre 1974) or normal bricks that are, well, crude and poorly made.

I mean... they have Lego sign on the top of the studs, but the material and quality is inferior. The plastic seems a bit translucent, the pieces aren't even and don't fit well together (see the red slopes on the image above). They are either fake, or really, really old. Prototype kind old.

    I have LEGO envy.

About those old pieces: LEGO is continuously experimenting with polymer formulas for its bricks. We recently had a monster of injection-moulding machine at the school to study the process of making one of the bricks to cut down the time with some millisecond. So when those pieces were made, probably in the '60s the polymer technology was in its infancy so maybe the pieces weren't so resistant to effects. Humidity, a little above average temperature and other elemental effects could weaken the composition causing it to deform. As you probably know each polymer composition is different(there are thousands) and engineered for certain demands. I will wager a guess and say that todays demandsand standards are a little more strict then back then.

Bumping because Lego is about to release a new round of Harry Potter sets which are going to hit my bank account hard. The idea behind these sets is that they cover books 1-3.

The headline item is Hogwarts' Great Hall:

I just love the detail in there, plus so many minifigs. I will be buying this without a doubt.

The Great Hall set has pins so that it can be connected to other sets, the idea being that over time you will be able to connect all these sets together to make one big Hogwarts castle. At the moment there's one other module, the Whomping Willow:

A lot of people have expressed disappointment with this set, but again I think the interior detail is great. Plus, when you combine it with the Great Hall set, it looks like this:

I think there's a pretty high chance I'll buy the Whomping Willow set too, not least out of a desire to collect all the Hogwarts modules so I can have the complete castle.

Another rather sweet looking set is the Hogwarts Express:

I'd love to get this but we'll see how the budget is looking. The only set which I consider largely skippable is the Quidditch Pitch:

There will also be Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald sets, but just one of those has been released so far:

How can this discussion have only one person talking of these?

    Technics and Mindstorms ftw.

    Have only one though:(:(

When will Mindstorms 4 come out?

When did new HP lego sets get announced? I swear I check for upcoming releases twice a month and have never seen anything about it. Unless it happened such a long time ago that I completely forgot.

The best thing about the Lego sets is you can see who is really kewl and who isn't.

The ones we sold in aggregate at Borders got u like nine Harrys and six Hermiones but only one Ron. I know that as time goes on we tend to give Ron a better light than we used to, but he can NEVER recover from this, imo.

Edit: "The only set which I consider largely skippable is the Quidditch Pitch"

A good rule of thumb for all Harry Potter derivative works.

They have not announced it, but I am waiting for it anyway...

I got introduced to Mindstorms fairly recently... way after launch of NXT2.0 and just before ev3 launch.

NXT2.0 is somewhat better than ev3.

Education kits are so much cooler than the commercial ones but the cost!

I will not be able to splurge on anything else for a year after that...

This is entirely accurate. Also, give me a good quidditch fanfic and I will read it. I actually have the draft of one on my old laptop. I should really give that one a go again…

Back on topic, I really like the look of these sets. I‘ve never owned anything from Lego that was HP-related, but my cousin had everything could get his hands on, so I have some recollection of what they used to be like. The colouring of the castle’s exterior walls looks nice, a bit of a warmer colour than in previous incarnations IIRC. Also, I can‘t help but wonder whether they will release two Dumbledores? The figure in Taure‘s first pic next to Filch looks like the Richard Harris Dumbledore.

I still have pretty much all of my old Power Miners and Exoforce sets, with some technic stuff thrown in there as well. Loved bionicle too :V

I was always incredibly jealous of my godbrother's collection. It dwarfed mine in every way - pretty much all of the modular buildings, all the airport stuff, all the star wars sets and so much fucking technic. I'm not sure what happened to it all after he died of brain cancer a few years ago... :/

Pretty cool picture I saw on reddit the other day:

My Lego Addiction is coming back into full force. The Saturn V I ordered off ebay using the 20% memorial day discount code is waiting at my house for when I get home from work.

Not to mention, I've been tinkering around with stud.io which is a lego design program. I believe it is Bricklink's one (or maybe just associated with it), and it's kind of similar to LDD except with more functionality from what I've found. I'm currently in the middle of converting the Megabloks Forward Unto Dawn into lego pieces, which I will then order so I can build it. It's a huge set, around 3000 pieces, and I'm only about halfway done. It's kind of simplistic, but I hope the exercise will help develop my own skills in creating original models, which is a skill I haven't had since I was like 8.

Additionally, I've been thinking again of some of the ideas I had a while back. I once had the idea to record my building, which would have been a novelty at the time, but it now looks like a lot of people do that, so I probably missed the boat. Other than that, I've been really thinking about doing some HP builds.

The least of which is getting a Hogwarts Express and enough track to loop around my room. I'm not really an expert on Lego trains though, but I think there's a few different types? I think there's power track versions, and powered train versions, but I could be wrong. The old motorized hogwarts express set is pretty expensive by itself, but you can get the individual power stuff for much cheaper, and then building the Hogwarts Express shouldn't be too bad. But, I think I'm going to wait until the new one comes out so I could steal that design.

Lastly, I've been thinking about a large MOC. At one point, I thought about doing the entirety of Hogwarts. Might have even made a post about it at one point, but I'm thinking something smaller (much smaller). Even Diagon Alley is too ambitious probably (though I would love to own the official set). I'm thinking maybe something in the department of mysteries. Arch room, perhaps.
