Probably one of my favorite short stories. A companion piece to the authors series of one-shots which all revolve around the somewhat novel concept where Dumbledore actually considers/wishes Harry to be more like a son. I really like the religious parallels drawn out here and the writing is really solid, little error from what I can see. It's done from Snape's POV and in my opinion encapsulates his persona from canon quite well. His anecdote about Lucifer and God was rather heartbreaking; it really hit all the notes I thought in how callous, uncaring and terrifying something Almighty could be to those without their favor.

I really enjoyed this and would recommend the read. However I haven't read the accompanying one shots.

I really enjoyed the allegory of lucifer, and I liked the angle of how Snape views Harry. It's not often people catch all the malice and poison in him, which is often excused and explained by his love for Lily. I liked that that barely figured in the motivations discussed.

I can't figure out how to rate on mobile, so when I get home I'll edit and rephrase this review but probably going to say it's a high four out of five.

Holy fuck but I could not stand the way the author chose to write that. It read awkwardly as all hell and bashed me over the head with the intended effect. If I could physically reach over and slap them, I would.

Exactly. It reads like some edgelord teen’s confession of love and personal manifesto all rolled into one steaming pile.

That anecdote about Lucifer and god is not only way over used (especially in edgelord brand fiction) but the author was practically beating us over the head with it. It isn’t a clever anecdote if it’s bloody fucking obvious.

Exactly as bad as the title suggested. While it has his immaturity and petty venom, it completely misses Snape's voice and just reads like inane prattle. The combination of a dark wizard and a Christian motif is a fairly vulgar clash in this setting.

This. I felt like I was reading a list of the author's ideas and interpretations molded into a narration, instead of the experiences of a fleshed-out character with a distinct personality. That's also a minor issue I had when reading the book Fahrenheit 451.

On the other hand, I actually liked the anecdote in theory, even if it could've been a little more, ah, subtle. I almost would have preferred a few hints about the parallels with maybe a short description of the story of Lucifer in the beginning, separate from the narration.

Basically, it was a mildly interesting concept that failed in execution. 2.5/5 rounded to 3/5 because my standards aren't as high as you guys'.

I have to agree with CareOtter. The bit about Lucifer was interesting but man this just made Snapes character come off as an annoying whiney little bitch.

Like if a 13-15 year old teen got their phone taken from them and it's just the end of the world and they're just the worst parents ever and it's just so unfair! That is how Snape' s character read to me but instead of being a teen he's a 40-50(?) Year old man.
