    Title: Oedipus Ikari
    Author: SerialRavist
    Rating: M
    Genre: Romance/Tragedy
    DLP Category: Misc.
    Pairing: ShinjixRei

    Status: Complete
Summary: Some opportunities are best left unexplored: Shinji and Rei done to the tune of Oedipus the King.

    Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3709228/1/Oedipus_Ikari

Starts off shortly before the battle against the 13th Angel, when Shinji and Touji go to Rei's place and Shinji cleans it.

Grammar and Spelling seem flawless, but again, I'm no master of the English Language.

I think this is a magnificent piece of fiction. The author stays true to the characters and all character development is easy to follow, no 180° turns here. In one facet, it is quite like the series itself: The story hooks you and seems to promise a happy sunshine ending, but then abruptly everything goes to hell. All in all, worthy of being recognized here, I believe.

(Quality Eva fiction is a pain in the ass to find, I'm glad I haven't regretted reading a 5-star story here yet :D )

As for the opera piece, I didn't know it, so I wiki'ed it after finishing the story. Slight spoiler if you know it though.

    5/5 from me.

5/5 from me. I love all of SR's works and this is no different. Flawless characterization and grammar, plus a good plot and flow.

Definatley the best Evangelion fanfic I have ever read , The character development was brilliant and actually expanded on the canon, If a bit dramatically in Rei's case. I like most of SerialRavist's other work as well.

Couldn't fucking stand it, and I'm a pretty big Eva-fanfiction fan. I think I read something like five or six chapters but couldn't go any further.

The pluses, is everything is perfect and the transistion from canon to his interpretation are flawless. Great pacing, great dialogue, great grammar...etc.

The problem. It expands on canon, but uses canon too much. Argh, it was frustrating because I kept waiting for it to branch-out but it relies on Canon like a crutch, retelling scenes and such but adding to them. That's why I couldn't stand it.

So 3/5 from me, because it is written damn well.

And what's this I hear about about good Evangelion fanfics hard to come by? The ratio of good fics to shit is much higher than in other fandoms. Try looking elsewhere besides ff.net and look for older pieces.

    Children of an Elder God.
    Higher Learning.
Check out hotwire, too, though can't remember if I liked his stuff or not.

Also Lavanya Six is one the newer OMG writers for the series.

I see your point but I guess you could say his plot as more of an expansion of canon. he was frustrated by the ending so he did what most fanfic writers did he created one that he was satified with but because the original story was so good he kept that intact.

Having read this one over some of last night and some of this morning, I can say that...

For what it was, and allowing the consideration of a pre-existing knowledge of the canon storyline(which is relatively necessary to fully enjoy the subtleties, such as they are, considering where it begins), I greatly enjoyed reading this piece of fiction.

I don't know how often I actually have score-rated stories, aside from 'rarely,' but I'll give this one a five out of five on the scale within its field of 'Evangelion Stories' that I have read.

I definitely appreciate how the story, as per the theme, developed the issue that is Rei's genetics, which has been generally avoided as a crucial point in what other Evangelion stories that I've read which involved a relationship with Rei. I admit that, while I know of the Oedipus Rex story loosely, I certainly don't know it detailed enough to consider one reviewer's comment about the author trying to hard to include a particular late-story element. Although I can say that it was rather sudden and, perhaps otherwise, seemingly unnecessary.

Aside from that, and the rare grammatical/spelling-error(Japanese at least) that stood out, the writing quality was quite evocative and I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys Evangelion in particular, and also stories that involve a good portion of thought process behind the actions of the characters. Also, while I could be wrong as it has been a while, I would say that, with allowances within the story's events, the characters acted rather true to themselves.

    [EDIT]
On a related note, while I just couldn't quite get into SerialRavist's other Evangelion story, "Orchestrating the Silence,"(I ended up skimming several chapters over the course of reading) I have enjoyed reading the Final Fantasy Tactics stories(been a long while since I played that game).
While "Iceman" was good, something, perhaps pacing or some other invisible factor, prevented me from reading it straight through, thus reading it in chunks of a few chapters at a time. "Heart of Gold," on the other hand seemed to flow excellently. Perhaps the first person perspective of the latter story, which resulted in some scene consequences that just appeared to work better. I've yet to read "Save the Queen," but that's for later.

Although the fic was absolutely amazing, I thought he twisted it a little too much to fit with the actual Oedipus Rex. Shinji hurting his eyes seemed unnecessary at that point and the parallels between both works were sufficient. Honestly, it just seemed tacked on to make it fit with the original premise.

Despite that one nitpick, this is one of the best NGE fics I've ever read. Definitely a 5/5.
