Another day, another pet peeve thread. You can find the old thread here.

...and I have a pet peeve to share. Wow, I haven't posted one of these in ages, but this is something I've been seeing more and more of - though it isn't exactly a new peeve.

When authors create an original character, then use them in every damn story they write. Especially when the character is damn annoying in the first place. This drives me nuts. Not a fan of original characters playing major roles anyway, but when the same one appears in several of their works in prominent roles? Arrgh!

This could also extend to another peeve, when an author just beats and beats one of their stories like an old horse. What I mean by that is when they make side stories, omake stories, pre-stories, stories about their kids, everything under the sun about the one story they wrote that got semi-popular. They just keep running with that deflated ball.

Try something different! You might have fun.

You know what really fills me with a momentary feeling of vague annoyance?

When authors forgo descriptions in favor of simply telling the reader to imagine characters, scenes, places, or objects from other works completely unrelated to the story in question.

Or when the author posts AN with links in the middle of the story to show what the characters or things look like.

Pet Peeve: Timelines because apparently it is impossible to show the differences from canon any other way.

Especially before the prologue / first chapter. If there's a difference, the author should find a way for it to be revealed in the text and not use clumsy, awkward crutches.

Probably said before. When in the canon series two characters have a platonic love or a partnership/friendship with a little more feelings in the mix and fanfiction authors interpret it as that they should fuck their brains out every two scenes. I don't care if they don't show that much or their private lives in the series, if they don't do casual displays of affection in it, they won't speak of lovers and eternal love in the bed. It is simply out of character.

I'm probably a minority in this, but regardless of the actual quality of the fic, if it is tagged as Romance, then I will not read it.

Some romance actually have a chance of being decent. Can't say the same for Angst or Hurt/Comfort though.

If what I am reading is fanfiction then I am the same. I think that the problem is that people write them because they feel the pairing should have happened in canon so they want to focus on that but when they do so they lose all the canon elements that made them think of the pairing.
It doesn't really help that the alternatives are either harem or banging the character the author would like to do.

    .

I see what you did there. Regarding Harrys new sword in that horrible reboot of Denarian Renegade.

A lot of my pet peeves relate to people ranting about canon events but having those events completely wrong. This can happen in author's notes or in the narrative with the author using a character (normally a lecture-prone Harry) as a mouthpiece.

    One of my (least) favourite:

"Why didn't Dumbledore, as Chief Warlock, get Sirius a trial in 1981! He must have been deliberately keeping Sirius from taking care of Harry!"

The problem: Dumbledore wasn't the Chief Warlock in 1981. He was just a regular member of the Wizengamot. We're not exactly sure what the Chief Warlock does, but if it's the person who leads proceedings then the Chief Warlock in 1981 was Barty Crouch.

People assume Dumbledore has total control over the ministry and its decisions while ignoring the fact that they easily kicked him out in OotP.

Potter Manor with impenetrable wards which are apparently stronger than fildelius and legions of House Elves also annoys me. It was alright in earlier fics like Summer of Change but people are abusing it now. Its like Harry can't be independent without a trunk which slows time and a Manor.

Oh, god yes. If the Potters had their own little castle or manor or whatever, warded to high heaven, why would they be living in a modest cottage with a dark wizard out for their heads? I think the only explanation ever given is something like "Lily didn't want to live in that giant palace/drafty castle/completely safe otherwordly paradise."

My new peeve: Parsel magic. It's almost always used just to super Harry up, and it has no basis in canon whatsoever. Parseltongue is just a magical language that lets you speak to snakes. It doesn't give root level access to magical spells that make yours better than everyone else's. The closest the books ever come to Parsel magic is setting a Parseltongue password, and even that can be bypassed by a non-Parselmouth through phonetic mimicry.

To be honest, Parseltongue is retarded to begin with. Snakes are reptiles, very primitive creatures, in terms of brain function. I guess a basilisk could be a different story, but just being able to speak a language through random weird bloodline makes no sense.

Parselmagic is retarded and so is any connection between that kind of magic and fellatio.

Parseltongue is obviously a linguistic user interface made to control snakes. :fire

I'm kind of surprised this is still going. Like really surprised. DLP is full of vindictive bastards who nitpick at the smallest things...You guys are awesome.

Also I hate Ginny Weasley still. (Bringing back some nostalgia to this thread)

The crutch of every open world video game it seems too.

My biggest peeve right now is people being constantly flippant. I don't mean the author using the word constantly, I mean characters being unfazed by everything because they're so cool and awesome. It's especially awful when people just shrug off witnessing violence/death/otherterribleshit.

I agree Rents. It goes the other way too. When a character who is canonically confident and authoritative is consistently thrown off guard.
