I'm a bit unsure of where would be best to post this. Part of me thought it would be better in Story Search, but since this is a bit different, I hoped it might be more appropriate here. If I did wrong, I will accept my exile to a penal colony in Australia with regret and understanding.

    So.

This endeavour I've been planning. It's a list. I was going to make a list - a top 100 Fanfiction list, one from each of a hundred different fandoms. I'm going to stick it up here, and you guys are welcome to repost it wherever you like if you feel like doing so.

We've got a lot of fanfic here, but it's mostly Harry Potter. There's a lot of other great stuff out there, in fandoms that most of us have never thought of looking in. And there's always that one guy who already read it. A sort of reference guide out there might add some diversity, and be a nice addition to the library.

I'd appreciate it if you contributed by posting a link and description to what you think is the best fanfic in its fandom. Feel free to argue over links posted - but I would ask that you suggest a better fic rather than just shout down a suggestion. I've posted a few down here to get us started, though, obviously, these are my opinion, not a definitive choice.

    In no particular order:

1 - Pokemon - Game of Champions - by Lamora

Most of you will have read this. Definitive re-telling of the games, with a character that accurately represents a silent player character in a world of mouthy NPCs.

    2 - Star Wars - Son of Suns trilogy - by blank101

A gem in a fandom flooded with shit. Decent character development and interaction, along with interesting deviations from canon events.

3 - Legend of Zelda - The Golden Power - by DBAinsw

This was utter fanwank, but I liked the larger-than-life hero thing that was going on. There are a lot of super-protagonist fics out there, but this is one of the few that's done with any technical skill to back it up.

4 - Game of Thrones - The North Remembers - by SilverRavenStar

I can't actually remember this one, but I see it being posted about constantly. Consider this a placeholder until someone confirms or suggests another.

5 - Dresden Files - The Dresden Files - by LittleChicago

I don't think this is allowed, sorry Jim.

6 - The Twilight Saga - 50 Shades of Grey - by some asshole

"Best" in this case means best earning.

    ----

Note: I'd rather not include crossovers or oneshots, just so everything is on the same level. Fics don't need to be finished, so long as there's a good chunk there. Vote for hurt/comfort fics if you really think they're the best in a fandom. But they won't be.

Having an entry for Harry Potter, and Naruto might be worth considering because of the fandoms' sheer size, but I'm dubious that we'd be able to find a clear winner for Harry Potter or Naruto. Might be better to leave them off the list.

I'm going to say that The North Remembers probably shouldn't be the best piece of ASOIAF fan fiction. It kind of dropped off an extremely steep cliff after the first 300k words or so. That said I'm not sure there is a definitively "best of fandom" choice for ASOIAF. Maybe A Better Fate by ColdHandsLuke is a better alternative? I'm hesitant to call really anything in the fandom the best though.

I know that you said no crossovers, but The Prince That Was Promised by Cxjenious is in my mind hands down the best story in the fandom.

    Spider-Man - Polarity - By Chris Myers

When a Romero-style zombie outbreak hits, three supervillains, led by a long time loser, find themselves doing whatever it takes to save themselves, and eventually, the rest of humanity.

Basically it's Marvel Zombies done right, starring The Shocker, alongside an extensive cast of Marvel heroes and villains.

The only other fics that could compete (that I know of) would be The Shocker: Legit? and Variant Strain (which is a fusion with Prototype, so it might be discounted anyway). Polarity is better than both.

I'm not great at summaries, but I'll give it a shot.

AU, Simon and Nia never meet and Earth gets destroyed by the Anti-Spirals. Great action and good character interactions.

Without much to choose from Behind the Curtain of Dusk by Voice of the Nephilim is probably the best work for Kingkiller Chronicles.

It is basically VotN's version of what the third book will and even though it is only five chapters and 27k words long it is loads better than anything else in the fandom. Or at least that's how it goes on ffn, I haven't looked anywhere else, but I doubt I'll find much considering there are less than a hundred stories for the fandom on ffn.

Cxjenious's The Prince That Was Promised is the best ASOIAF fic but it is an HP crossover.
The best non-crossover fic for asoiaf for me would be A Better Fate by ColdHandsLuke (which is now in WbA forums)

I'm not sure which one, but either Life in Konoha's ANBU or People Lie for Naruto.

If I had to pick, I would probably go with Life In Konoha's ANBU too...though People Lie and the Howling Wind (god I need more WIND CHAKRAS in my life, dat cliffhanger) are strong contenders too.

The Prince That Was Promised beats everything else the fuck out, don't care if its a crossover.

I'd say the North Remembers is closest in tone to the original novels. It deserves that spot. I still don't really like it.

As for Naruto. There are too many close contenders. I wouldn't give it to Shezza though.

I think for Naruto... I think Life in Konoha's ANBU might be of a bit higher writing quality to The Howling Wind, but at the same time it feels a little less like Naruto in terms of the storytelling.

Naruto is about a kid who starts at nothing and we follow along as he becomes badass. He's a loudmouth, he's stubborn, he wants to be the Hokage, etc.

Konoha's ABU is probably my favorite fic, but Howling Wind is really close and it changes enough to keep things fresh/interesting without telling a different story altogether. It might be a better fic in terms of selecting a single one from a fandom to represent it.

I'm 50/50. But I think it should be one of those two for Naruto IMO. Other possible contenders would be Leaf's Naruto, or... well, I haven't read that "People Lie" one so I'm gonna go do that.

I second Lamora for the best Pokemon fic. Traveler and Sun Soul are popular too, but I don't think either can compete.

    Here's another one:
How to Train Your Dragon best fanfic -- Hitchups (hands down)

Sadly I haven't read a FMA fic that might quality. "Full Circle" is popular but it's not great imo.

I second the Game of Champions and Son of Suns recs.

I have two Mass Effect nominations:

    Interstitium By: AssaultSloth
Flashbacks, interstitial scenes, and backdoor dealings. A companion to ME2 focusing on characters and worlds, big and small.
    Rated: Fiction T - English - Sci-Fi - Shepard (M), Garrus V., Miranda L., Tali'Zorah - Chapters: 33 - Words: 535,038 - Reviews: 867 - Favs: 798 - Follows: 645 - Updated: May 1 - Published: Feb 16, 2010 - Status: Complete - id: 575345

the summary explains it better than I could. It's in my top-3 fanfiction reads with Game of Champions and Three Families.

and this story, and its sequels

Fight for the Lost By: LuxDragon
Entire human colonies are vanishing. To save humanity, the galaxy's best and toughest individuals come together to form an unlikely team, all led by one very specific man. Novelization of Mass Effect 2. Default Male/Paragade/Multi-Class. Shepard/Miranda. Poster by EpisodeSkywalker

A Mass Effect 2 novelization. It sticks closely to canon, and if you're not a fan of reading about the canon missions, it's worth it for the characterizations presented in the interludes, which are, largely, the author's own work.

    And an Avatar: TLA rec:

Three Families by James Golen reviews
Three Families seek the Avatar. Three Families find the Avatar. Three Families use the Avatar. The story of how three sets of siblings are changed by the Avatar, amidst an endless war. AU, Want of A Nail.
    Avatar: Last Airbender - Rated: T - English - Adventure/Supernatural - Chapters: 61 - Words: 1,236,700 - Reviews: 357 - Favs: 178 - Follows: 144 - Updated: Dec 5, 2013 - Published: Jul 19, 2011 - Aang, Azula - Complete

This fic is its own worst enemy at times - there's no reason it needs to be 1.2 million words long. But the world bending is second to none, the characterizations are stellar, and the plot, even though it gets a bit wonky at times, is fun as shit.

Its been awhile since I have browsed either fandom, but I would have to say that Altered Destiny by Shezza is probably the best Wheel of Time fic despite being nine years old and abandoned. The Thin Line by Man of Reason if I recall correctly had potential to be a great story, but it was abandoned early on.

And back when I was desperate for Night Angel Trilogy works I didn't find anything that was worth being called the best which I guess is understandable considering how the trilogy while not exactly unpopular it certainly isn't popular. However, as stated earlier it's been a while since I read any stories for it and now there could be some great story there. I doubt it though considering the fandom is tiny (only 43 stories on ffn).

Peggy Sue fic that I reread from time to time. Good portrayal of Gendo and SEELE and whatever sympathy I had for Ritsuko evaporated after this one.

What Fates Impose by Frea O'scanlin is hands down the best Chuck fic.

I freely admit I haven't read much FFT fics, but this was by far the best of them. Plus, it's complete.

When Bryce Cousland's little spitfire scaled the Tower of Ishal and lit the beacon at the critical moment, King Cailan won a mighty victory against the darkspawn. Both stories are pretty epic. And even if you don't like the Loghain/femCousland in VaO, it is one of the best stories in Dragon Age. By the way, anyone know something equally good in this fandom? I've been looking recently.

VtM:B, done right. Really the only way to describe it - follows the general plot of the game as a Tremere, but with the world expanded...it's what you expect from WoD. Gets better as things to on, currently downtown. Almost a year since the last update, but that has happened before.

Those are probably the best stories going in the fandom, but both of the authors like doing this really irritating thing where they make almost everyone who is isn't the protagonist and their immediate party members barely functional retarded cutout versions of themselves.

In Arsenoe's case it's so she can get on her soapbox about how disgusting and morally reprehensible everything in Thedas is (mostly the Chantry and the Qunari). For Tsu its so everyone can come up with these paper thin schemes to fuck with the warden so that we can all laugh at them when she effortlessly crushes them and then drops mad truth bombs on them about how shit they are (Teagan, all the templars ever, the empress).

So while the writing is really good in them and a lot of awesome comes from their interpretations of the games, it can get really tiresome if you read to much of them in one go.
