So is Fallout 3, yet I've read fics crossed with it that don't wank guns.

    Edit: Same for Borderlands.

What do you even mean by "gun wank?"

As to the topic, I don't think I've ever seen a good Metal Gear fanfic, and I think there's room for interesting stories there.

    Both aren't serious.

You've never played Stalker, have you?

    What a presumptuous thread.

In my case I mean does the author go on about how guns are the best and can beat anything? Wax poetic about intricate details of the ins and outs of guns.

    Was it not obvious?

I've never seen a STALKER story avoid gun wank, and Stalker Zero is no exception. Sorry.

    And? So what?

Gun wank in a Stalker fic if done right is no different from sword wank in Skyrim fics. Both have a strong emphasis on having the right weapon or you die.

Dota 2 Fanfic crossovers. Hell Yeah! I'm really tempted to write a Dota 2/Znt crossover. Premise is that Louise doesn't summon a hero but the actual battlefield. :/

Wouldn't the reverse be more interesting? She herself gets summoned on a dota battlefied? Having to fight against all the other heroes.

There's nothing really interesting in Dota 2 in comparison to having Dota 2 in Halkegenia. Chaos!

Huh, for me it's the opposite. Forcing Louise to interact with the various characters, having to adapt to working with some despite hating them or desperately trying to befriend someone in order to have an ally, having her adapt to what are practically deathmatches against vastly superior foes, making it a necessity for her to develop her own powers in order to be able to survive, having to discard her preconceptions of how a noble fights in order to survive. Either trying to get back or carve her own place into this world. Having her evolve and grow and change. Have her worldview challenged.

If you keep it, how being revived constantly after dying messes with her head and her religious views.

Dota in her land, well, mostly a curbstomp by the dota characters and there are a million stories where someone gets summoned there and steamrolls everyone until the story loses steam in 40k words or less.

Just my personal view, of course, but the former seems far more interesting.

You could make a pretty good series of oneshots by having Louise summoned into different patches. Have her face different OSfrog Balanced Heroes OSfrog of the respective patch could be pretty funny.

Huh, well, moving past the initial assumption that this thread would be about discussing why some popular fandoms are popular for fanfic and why some aren't (partially but not entirely covered earlier in the thread)...

I feel like Avatar: The Last Airbender has a lot of untapped potential. Yes, there are 40k AtLA fics on ffnet. But I haven't found any good ones that completely retell the entire story, start to finish, making changes as they go. The HP equivalent would be writing a 7-year AU, with variation in what Harry learns, who he learns it from, who his allies are, and how he defeats the big bad. I've read some AtLA attempts, but nothing on a grand scope I'd rate 4/5.

I haven't poked around the fandom much, but I wouldn't mind reading a completed Detective Canon (Case Closed in the US) fanfic. I quit following the anime/manga a long time (years and years) ago, but I love the concept. A teenage detective prodigy is de-aged to elementary school years when he stumbles across a plot. The bad guys attempt to kill him, but instead the weirdass plot device happens. The show/manga is mostly him running around solving crimes (and arranging it so that the credit usually goes to his girlfriend's father, a detective). It's episodic in nature, like a bunch of interconnected short stories that plan several chapters.

But it drags on and on and on. I want to see the damn main plot arc finished. I want to see Conan admit to Ran that he's Shinichi and he's been de-aged. I want to see her kick his ass for that. I want to see him solve the 'big mystery' in a satisfactory way.

HP equivalent? Basically any of the 7-year stories that started in that three year gap between GoF and OotP. We had about half the story, and people filled in the rest. Sometimes in appealing and well thought out ways.

(Note: If that damn manga ever got anywhere with any of its main plots, someone let me know so I can consider going to catch up)

Manga/Anime like Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, and Hunter x Hunter? Well, I'll be honest... I love those. FMA is my favorite complete manga, and HxH is probably my favorite ongoing on. OP is fantastic too. But I don't feel a strong desire for fanfic from those, because so far all of them are handling the story really well in my opinion.

I don't really want to read a OP AU in which Luffy acts differently, trains differently, never meets Ace, etc. I don't care that much about reading a pure filler arc (I.e. they visit an island and the story takes place during canon, though I agree it could be worth a read). I don't feel a desire for a retelling in which someone is less stupid, more badass, or whatever.

OP is pretty tight, all things considered. There isn't a whole lot of "but what if?" going on in my head when I read/watch it. The same is true for HxH And FMA. HxH is a rich world that would be fantastic for crossovers, but I haven't got a burning desire for fanfiction to 'fill in gaps' or 'fix something' about canon for me.

With HP or Naruto? Hell yeah that's there. "What if Harry was better at magic?" "What if Dumbledore trained him?" "What if Sirius was never arrested?" "What if Harry was in Slytherin?" "What if Harry was a werewolf?" "What if Naruto was on another team?" "What if Kakashi was a better teacher?" "What if Konoha was a brutal as hell place?" "What if Naruto had been talking to the Kyuubi from early childhood?"

I could go on for ages about all the 'what if' scenarios that easily occur to people while reading less tightly handled stories like HP and Naruto. Stories that people want to write, and that others might be curious enough about to read.

One Piece? Not really. I mean there's a "What if Ace didn't die," maybe, but that would probably remove conflict rather than generate it. Someone on the crew could die early I suppose, to make it a more serious story even from Luffy's POV, but eh.

Same for FMA. It's tightly plotted and there aren't a bunch of 'what if' scenarios that sound more interesting in any way to what we already got in canon.

Hunter X Hunter is fantastic, but there isn't as much of an overarching goal. Leorio wants to be a doctor, Kurapika wants to get revenge because Danzo a gang stole all his families sharingan red eyeballs. Gon and Killua want to have a good time. There's tons of room for fanfic or crossovers, but without adding some kind of overarching plot to build towards, the writer is going to be coming up with their own original plot, and there are few writers good enough to pull that off in fanfic.

    So ... wow, yeah, rambled!

Warcraft has dozens of interesting characters(like Arthas, Trall, Illidan, Azhara) and one of the most rich lore ingames with a few novels.

The Witcher should have a lot of fanfics, but it doesn't. Which is starnge considering that the game was so well recieved. But I understand why it doesn't have so many fics - cultural background, knowledge of books and the authors peculiar style of world building.

Lets start from the last point. Sapkowski is an erudite that loves to show it around, his books are choke full shout outs, historical and literary references and post-modernism. As for the two previous points - knowledge of books ain't really necessary when most people who writ fanfics got introduced to The Witcher by games. As for the cultural background - it goes back to Sapkowski writing satyle, the world of Witcher is a mix of classical fairy tales, fantasy, medieval history and post-modernism, mixed with a unique Central European/Slavic view on a lot of things.

But why should The Witcher should have a big fandom? Big and open world, where you can create almost any kind of story. Post-modernism and anachronism allows the author to have sorceres talk about genetics and druids to push their ecological agenda. And you have a ready answer for every crazy thing you can think about - the Conjunction of Spheres.

    Ghostbusters.

    All day everyday Ghostbusters.

I've had a story rattling around for awhile set in that universe. Plenty to build on and with. May get to it one of these days!

The Southern Vampire Mysteries has a lot of potential to play around with, but somehow the nature of the audience is such that 99.9% of fanfics there are all just bullshit romance stories. That's a mix of the author's fault with having a weaker second half of the series, and partially Trueblood's Fault, because that TV series is a piece of shit. And then there's just the vampire genre in general - most of the people reading it are probably more in clue with Twilight rather than the World of Darkness.

The books are good, with interesting plots, a gritty world, and an interesting universe (at least, until the fairy subplot came to fruition). It just loses focus sometimes, and that's where a fanfic should be able to took root and do something awesome.

Another problem with OP is the large cast. Meaning you either have to go off the rails relatively early and develop a very large OC cast and world, (if you go with a "What if Luffy started in another ocean" or whatever) or contrive some team ups that don't really flow organically, in most cases you are struck with a main cast of 8 or so. It is relatively difficult to justify separating them for a whole story. True, you have huge casts in Naruto and HP as well, but the main story can focus on 1-3 characters. You can't really ignore/sideline the crew all that much, unless you go with a x got captured or a storm separated them.

Percy Jackson should be brimming with potential, btw, and it has huge numbers of fanfics, but honestly, I saw a few good one shots and that's pretty much it. Ryuugi's Dresden Files crossover was the one good longer story and that one is dead or at least in coma. Most of them are either shitty love stories or shitty "X reads the Percy Jackson books" stories.

FMA is pretty much flawless, and honestly, same as Cheddar, have zero interest in most what if scenarios there. Potential for that is either backstories for canon characters, until we meet them in FMA, there was a great Roy and Riza childhood story that I remember, or stories set after canon, and honestly, FMA wrapped up perfectly and I don't see the need to look further in there.

The one interesting story I could imagine is, after canon, Drachma is gearing up for war, and since they don't have any homuncili and philosopher stones any more, not to mention they are recovering from their own civil war, having lost a lot of State Alchemists to Scar, that could be tricky, to see such a story play out.

After all, they didn't the defeat the big bad by reaching Super Sayjan or something. If anything, Ed is a normal human now.

Then again, who is the main character in that case? Ed, Alphonse, Riza, Mustang? Or do you go ASOIAF with many, many POVs? Interesting for me would be Riza and Roy, if only that they still have to fulfil their dream, while trying to protect their country. Their story could still go on. But really, FMA is done.

I would like to see some kingdom stories, but honestly, I wouldn't know what there could be to write about. Maybe have a certain someone survive and see how that derailed the story but really, it's pretty tight so far.

The Witcher is what I immediately thought of when I read the thread title. It even has dimension travel baked into the canon. So there even isn't a need to come up with a highly original plot, just have Geralt, Ciri or whoever travel to a universe of your choosing.

Also Geralt as a protagonist is perfect for fanfiction. He has the same neutral mask thing going that has made Harry such a great protagonist for ff. Hell since he is striped of all emotions authors can just have him be present for events and have their OC's provide the reactions.

Now I'm not saying that would make for great fanfiction, but it should give an opening for anyone that wants to write. The good fanfics would come later after the initial ones get the ball rolling.
