I think you're underestimating this guy. Clearly he has much wisdom to share with us.

You're bad and you should feel bad.

I'd ban you but I'd have a hard time justifying 'banned for being a retard' when we have syed on staff.

@Anna Key the thing is, Blood Rites sets up a ton of stuff for later on, that doesn't excuse a weak story, but I'd argue that it does justify some of it.

...are you judging the books based on the TV series? Because that's pretty fucking retarded.

Are you basing that just on having watched the show? Because I'll grant you, that was legitimately awful based on what I saw of it. But the books...you must have a very, very different definition of awesome.

Because the Dresden Files TV series is a pale imitation of the books and you're bad for confusing the two.

What's the point in even replying to you, I banned you so you can't respond!

    [stare]You fat fuck. [/stare]

I'm not dead dude. Still alive and kicking. And I like to think the thread can be useful for anyone else interested in Dresden Files.

Oh, and just to give everyone a heads up, I finished Fool Moon and am listening to Grave Peril as I'm writing this.

Jon: It's just, like, his opinion, man. A poorly worded, grammatically weak, opinion.

But seriously, the TV show and the book series have about as much in common as the movie and story versions of Lawnmower Man.

We've had a couple threads before where folks rated the books in personal best to worst... I've seen a grand total of one person, in 6 years of looking, say that Fool Moon was their favorite, while Proven Guilty, Dead Beat, Turn Coat and Changes almost continuously rank at the top.

Well, if nothing else this thread let me know that not only is Syed still active on the forums, but apparently he's a Supermod. Guess the ignore feature works pretty well on the site.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHA

Wait, you're serious? In the interest of making the world a better place, I'll tell you the TV show has very little to do with the books.

One of the people on this thread has the 'Dresden rides a Zombie T-Rex' avatar. Yes, that happens. No, that level of awesome isn't a one-off. It's not even the best one. Go read it. If you're impatient, start with Summer Knight.

And for the non-banned people, I don't mean it improves like a linear line. It's a tad more Stock Marketish in it's trajectory. I don't like Ghost Story - it feels like a pause, and I dislike pauses. But that he did Changes at all is fairly incredible - that is an author with a hell of a long term plan. And I cannot wait to learn more about our new overlord, Jedi Butters.

EDIT: Somehow I missed that there was entire extra page of responses to this guy. Oh well. Jedi Butters makes it all better.

I picked up Storm Front (#1) to read on a plane. Mostly because my two favorite genres to read are Detective and Fantasy, so it seemed an obvious choice. I liked it reasonably well. Enough to pick up the second book the next time I needed to kill time, but not enough to run out and read it right then.

Rinse and repeat through Book #4, which was one of my least favorites (Elaine and Fae? No thanks!)

Then... Book #5. Death Masks. There'd been hints of an overarching plot in Grave Peril and Summer Knight, but Death Masks is where it hit me that it would be significant. And Death Masks is where I was hooked.

After reading Death Masks (#5) I promptly bought the rest of the books, up through Turn Coat (#11) I believe. Or maybe not Turn Coat, maybe it had just come out in hardcover, not sure. I finished the rest that week.

For me that's in large part where Dresden shines. Take the most recent book, Skin Game (#15). I was excited for the plot of that book (a heist!) but I was equally excited to see how larger, overarching events would continue to unfold. That's what did it for me, and I first felt it in Death Masks.

It doesn't hurt that Nicodemus is such an entertaining douchebag of a villain, either. :D

I do love Nicodemus. He must be one of the best villains I've ever read. Mabs revenge against him was savage though.

The next book, Peace Talks, will probably be really good regarding the overarching plot. However I'm most excited for Mirror Mirror. That's going to be one of the most fun Dresden books I think. After that (Book 18) shit's probably all going to go to hell. We're getting close to the end guys! I started reading just after Small Favor had come out.
