Regarding Eclipse Phase, thus far the most common stuff brought up in "Vigil" is resleeving and forking (basically creating primary and backup versions of yourself through digital transfer of your consciousness into one or more bodies/morphs), uplifts of certain Earth-native animals (I never really understood that particular part about the setting) and several other minor things that are tied into the whole transhumanism theme of EP. If need be, you could download whatever Eclipse Phase books you desire from here for free, since they were released under the Creative Commons license.

From what I've seen thus far, where FEAR is concerned, you don't really have to know anything except to recognize a few familiar names that are used here for several characters that are unlike their counterparts from the video games.

And Destiny? No fucking clue. Never played the game and have absolutely no knowledge about it, so I can't even tell you what parts of the fic borrow stuff from the setting of the game. Doesn't stop me from enjoying anything.

Ultimately though, I don't anyone would need to have any knowledge about the settings. If you want, look into the basic stuff about it, the outline about the settings themselves, but you really shouldn't delve too deep, since the author is just taking whatever he likes from each of the aforementioned settings and doing with them whatever he pleases.

    Edit:

I can't believe I forgot to link this:

    Vigil: Codex and Supplemental Information

As it says in the summary, it's supplemental information for the Vigil Mass Effect/XCOM/Eclipse Phase/FEAR/Destiny crossover setting.

You've got explanations for technology in the first chapter, humanity and factions in the second and locations and aliens in the third. I'll put this up in the post where I recommend the fanfic as well.

I've been reading of sheep and battle chicken. It's good, but holy fuck is it long. Also, Shepherd is my least favorite character in it, mostly because I feel like the author made her using an excel spreadsheet and checklist boxes to make it grimdark, and failing.

Of Sheep and Battle Chicken is actually fantastic once you get past the first 400,000 words or so. Before that it's merely "okay."

The grimdark-ness eases up a lot, thank God.

I wouldn't call it okay, more like semi-crap. The author should be beaten.

I'd chime in with a piece that some may find unusual (or boring) -- https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7964048/1/Through-the-Looking-Glass

If you like biotic renegade Shepard i recommend: Something Blue by: HamHammer
    summary:
An alternate perspective on a renegade Commander Shepard, why she fights, and what she lives and dies for. Spans from ME1 through ME3. FemShep/Liara pairing, non-explicit. Rated M for adult situations and just to be on the safe side.

Living an Indoctrinated Dream updated, for those of you who foolishly aren't carefully following it, it's an Illusive Man peggy sue. It's worth a shot.

I can never get through the first few chapters though, where it's an illusion man Mary Sue (and a bad one at that).

Only one off the top of my head is
Spoilered because it's a significant plot point revealed pretty far into it.

I'd argue that any literary protagonist or antagonist in the vein of the Illusive Man who gets sent back in time should look very much like a Mary Sue. It's canon that TIM managed to found Cerberus and get a ton of things done the first time around, with the benefit of hindsight he should appear to be abnormally and story-breakingly competent.

He does run into difficulties later, quite a few of them.

    Fair enough.

It's also badly written and I'm also so happy you quoted this because illusive autocorrected to illusion and I can't edit that post anymore, and it's all very tragic.

But yeah no it's not written very well, the illusive man is hella annoying, and he's still a mary sue.

Anyone seen any decent Firefly/ME crossovers? I haven't found any. Preferably something where Firefly humans discover the relay network.

Time for a necro of this thread.

I stumbled across a Mass Effect/Starcraft crossover completely by accident and I didn't regret giving it the time of my day.

    Sudden Contact

I know the summary don't provide you much information, but I'm not gonna say anything about the plot because I don't want to spoil it. Instead, I'll just heartily recommend it as one of the best crossover fics out there. The author nails down everyone and everything in this fic.

Everyone's got some flaws, some fuck-ups, everyone's got their moment to shine.

Forget what you remember about the usual Mass Effect characters, because while they may be here, they're not really gonna be in the same place as they were before. And the best part about it is that the author simply makes it work fantastically.

This is one of those rare fics that you gobble down in one go, if you got the time.

There's also an ongoing (last update was yesterday) sequel: Sudden Supremacy.

No summary for that one, because spoilers.
