Okay, before you guys start posting, I have to say that I have no clue about what Dresden Files is about, where it takes place etc. etc.

My knowledge about the series (And yes, I do know it's a series) is limited to knowing it's about this character named Harry Dresden and the setting is apparently modern.

That is where my admittedly very short amassed knowledge about DF ends.

So, opinions about where I should start and whether I should start.

Read the wiki or something on Fool Moon. It fucking sucks. But yeah, I'd say it's worth reading.

    ScottPress.

Dude. You do realize that you said 'It sucks' and then 'worth reading' in the same sentence, right?

Unless I'm interpreting you wrong and you meant that the wiki 'Sucks' and the book is 'Worth reading'.

Or possibly that Fool Moon sucks (a common opinion that I don't agree with, actually), but the series as a whole is worth reading.

Also, pretty sure this is at least the third incarnation of this thread we've had in the last couple of years.

Just start with the first book, some people think it's weak but I think it's fine. Starting on the 3d one is just weird.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Also, Myrrdin Emrys, *whispers* don't listen to this guy. Fool Moon sucks. First book is fine. Third is fine. Fourth is where it gets good. Fifth is baller. Haven't bit into number six yet.

Yeah, I have one too. Everyone wants to feel speshul about their DF experience. ;)

I just don't see how anyone can think a book which features a wizard magically punching a bus-sized werewolf through two buildings completely sucks...

    Shinysavage. Gizmore. ScottPress.

I think I'll start at the beginning of the book. Will let you guys know how I felt about Fool Moon after I read it.

And Shiny, you're right, I did look at the last 'incarnation' of the thread, but I found it to be filled with spoilers and I truly did not want to wade through 5 pages of discussion.

EDIT: Wait a minute, Shinysavage, are you saying that a guy punched a werewolf through 2 buildings?

Dude, at some point you gotta take off the training wheels.

Dresden is worth reading. Most of the forum would agree with me there. Read every word. Start with the intention of finishing.

It's all relevant, the good and the bad. Sit down and absorb some really good story.

I don't get the dislike of Fool Moon. I acknowledge the superiority of the books after it, but I still enjoyed the book. The way ppl talk about it I'm surprised they decided to continue on with the rest of the series.

Also, Myrrdin Emrys there are a few Dresden short stories/novellas which take place between books. I'd utilize the Dresden wiki to get the chronology.

Speaking of which, is there any word on when the next book is coming out?

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts after you finish each book, one by one starting with Storm front.

It'd be a nice change of pace to hear the thoughts of someone reading the books first time.

I don't think any word officially, but I know that a Peace Talks sample chapter was released as a preorder for a Dresden game of some sort.

Absolutely second that. ScottPress is doing something similar. Fresh sets of eyes always make me re-evaluate things myself, so getting a new reader's impression is always good.

As for the next book... <shrugs>. This year? Maybe?

Seratin. I'll be sure to do that.

Invictus. I'd rather read every book and evaluate it on my own though.

LittleChicago. Sure, I'm up to it.

There is something extremely funky going on with my computer. My apologies if you see this post twice.

What Joe said. I never listen to people who suggest reading stories out of order that are clearly meant to be read in order.

The only relevant question here, in my mind, is "Should I read this series in order or does it matter?" And the answer is "read it in order."

If you were reading Chronicles of Narnia there'd be two main options, order of publication and putting them in order by the timeline of events. If you're reading Terry Pratchett there's several places you can start. If you're reading Hercule Poirot start wherever the hell you want.

With Dresden, start with Storm Front.

The reason people occasionally say otherwise is because the first few books of this series are fairly standard. They aren't bad but they aren't OMGAMAZEBALLS either. If you aren't already into the idea of "Wizard Detective in Chicago" then it'd be possible to read the first book or two, shrug, say it 'was good,' and not continue.

Most of DLP would tell you to continue to either book 4, 5, or 6 before making the final decision it's not for you.

That said, if you read Storm Front and HATE HATE HATE it, then maybe the books aren't for you after all. But if you think Storm Front isn't bad, then keep going. It's worth the ride.

Yeah, punching werewolves, okay. Fool Moon was a struggle. Picked up the third, it was better. Kept going, it kept getting better. Fool Moon may not be terrible on every front on its own, I just think that the further I went into the series, the worse Fool Moon seemed in comparison.
