I thought that worked well, it was the sort of weird thing I could see Dresden teaching her.

For Peace Talks I want to get a good look at the rest of the world. We've had a lot alluded to over the past few books, but Harry has been on a mission non-stop. The framing of the book, as a conference, seems ideal for that. It would be nice to have a wider view, along of course with the OTP and minimal Butters.

I haven't read the sample chapter though.

So is this the shortest time between books? It seems to be just a few months? Cold Days was kinds soon after Ghost story, but the real chunk of it wasnt till quite a bit latter after Harry got finished with rehab.

Honestly I am kinda glad that we didnt have to sit through Thomas' rehab, yeah its kind of a cheat to go, so its been a few years and I've worked through it although it has changed me.

But better that than having to read several chapters of books of angst.

The bold suggests he wasn't serious.

I think you are right, Changes -> Ghost Story was 6 months wasn't it?

I think it's about time that we gave up on this whole 1 year between books thing. I mean, it worked very well later on, but we're getting to the point where events progress much faster than that. And I don't know how much more growing up Harry really has to do in order to do what he needs to do.

I think he still has quite a bit of growing. So not sure how he will handle it with out the story narrative getting screwy.

Fool Moon was about 6 months after Storm Front; the books settled into a 10-14 month space between each after that, until Ghost Story was supposed to be about 8 months after Changes, then Cold Days was about 4 months after Ghost Story. Skin Game restored the one-year leap, and Peace Talks cuts it to 3 months.

A handful of the each. I've been processing, which of course is code for work started stomping my face in and I forgot.

Thoughts? The whole thing felt unpolished. I think others have said it- something was missing. If it was intentional, to make people unsatisfied, then it's doing the job of making sure I want to read more. If not, I hope it's taken care of later down the road.

Feelings? One thing that really hit home though was the way Harry shut Thomas down. "That's selfish, and you can't afford to think that way. Not any more." I'm in a bit of a different spot, but when I found out that my wife was pregnant, I had a similar moment of realization. It's not just the two of us any more. there's quite a bit packed into getting ready for a kid, much less actually having one. At the time those emotions were somewhat overwhelming, and I love that Butcher managed to capture a shadow of what that felt like in just a few lines.

On a lighter note, Carlos and Thomas' reaction to "Tell me the Council doesn't want me to be our emissary," made me laugh outright.

Gut reaction? I'm excited. I really can't wait. Particularly to see if Mouse shows up.

Theories? I think we'll see several things come to the surface, and in ways that will be more than difficult. I'm half expecting the White Court's Paternal issue to make itself known, and Lara to be outed in some fashion. I also think we will see less of Murphy. More of a side lines thing. I'm also expecting Mavra to come crawling out of the woodwork. Aren't the Black Court represented in the Accords? Seems like we're overdue for a visit from her- and it could also be another thing to set Harry off.

Fears- I don't want to see the Knights much this book. I don't think we will, but if I had a fear that would be it. The pop culture thing kinda fits here, but it's also part of Harry, so I wouldn't want it lost entirely. Maybe just at the more irreverent and inappropriate parts?

Hopes? Lots. I'd like for the Harry's Family thing to work itself out into something more natural. It's currently not, and I think a bit more development will aid in what Butcher is trying to accomplish.

    Dreams?

Pretty sure I already posted (but I am drunk atm)... however, that said... I'm not overly excited by the new chapter.

As a general rule if you establish something in the first chapter it is going to be one of the 'big things' for the entire book. And even if this chapter is edited, the fact that there is 'drama' surrounding Dresden's niece/nephew will probably still be the focus of the chapter.

Personally I miss the days where this series was about a Private Detective who also happened to be a Wizard. That's what got me to pick up the series to begin with. My two favorite genres are the cop/detective/mystery genre and the fantasy genre, so even if Storm Front was mediocre it was still a match made in heaven. I'd have continued reading regardless of recommendations.

But while I enjoyed the hell out of Skin Game, and while I do like having overarching plots (and those are what made me into a true 'fan' of this series)... I do feel that in some ways the series is starting to become a character study in a similar way to what X-Files did.

X-Files was awesome. But in the last few seasons it became less and less about the CASES that Mulder and Scully were investigating and more and more about the drama revolving around the LIVES of Mulder and Scully. It was interesting, but that's when I felt it went downhill.

Is the same thing happening here? No, not quite. But I admit I'm far more interested in Dresden providing Security for a major conference of Powers than I am in the fact that Justine is pregnant. Yet it's the latter that dominated Chapter 1.

Cheers folks! And remember, I'm drunk at the moment. So I reserve the right to deny anything I just fucking said. And spelling errors don't count. So there.

Thanks to Jim, for linking me the chapter.

Really like the character interaction, but that's always great from Butcher. Have a feeling that things are really going to get wild at the talks. Could see Harry at that meeting in a dual capacity, both Molly's knight if she's Winters representative and as White Council security. I'd actually really enjoy seeing him torn in two directions there with Mccoy and Molly.

Harry being all Dad-mode and counseling Thomas on getting his shit together was nice too. I really look forward to more Daddy Dresden if Jim can make it natural.

It's the Unseelie Accords. I doubt Mab will be missing. I kind-of wish for an appearance by Mother Winter as well.

And I really think the Merlin can't afford to not go himself to such an important meeting, not with the kind of power-plays that I'm sure have plagued the White Council after Turn Coat. Besides, he has always seemed like the "politician" of the Senior Council to me, so it kind-of fits. I expect him to be in Chicago with Dresden as host (lol), also because it will make for some conflict in and on itself. I mean, it's going to be either him or Cristos imo, but if it's the latter, it means the Merlin has been completely and utterly screwed "off-screen".

Who else? Will they trust Luccio enough to go, after Peabody's influence on her? Could another Senior Council member be present as well? A fighter like McCoy, perhaps? If he's there, I think he'll be the dramatic death of the book, as probably the least diplomatic wizard beside Dresden himself. He's the kind of guy to have made so many fucking enemies - Kincaid, who will undoubtedly be there as Ivy's bodyguard, Lara, who has promised to remember his actions on Demonreach. Ariana and the Red Court, if they had not been destroyed would have been another perfect example. And a pet-theory of mine has Mother Winter with a vested interest in him as well...

All in all, I'm super excited for this next book. Release can't come soon enough.

That's true. I should've stopped for a second to think about how important bringing on a new member of the Accords is. Although did we get any indication of a big meeting like this when Marcone signed? I can't remember, but did Carlos say that the whole Senior Council would be there? That's some heavy duty wizarding power, especially with Carlos and Harry there.

With that in mind it would make sense for Mab to be there. Maybe even with Molly. I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if Winter and Summer Mothers showed up. I imagine we'll see Gard and the Einherjar as well.

What should be funny/tense is that all the groups that show up here, save for Winter, the White Council, and maybe Marcone have a huge beef with Harry.

Question: Are the Dragons part of the Accords? Could we see Ferrovax?

Ferrovax, if he's not part of the Accords, lives nearby. At least, I recall either a Word of Jim or a line from Grave Peril regarding that. Of course, there's also WoJ that he'll only turn up at the end of the series, but things may have changed since then. It would be reason enough to invite him, if only to not piss him off.

I'm almost a hundred percent that a dragon is a member of the accords. Considering how few there are, it makes sense that's the eldest.

I was under the impression that Dragons operated much like city states and that they all have their own seat on the accords but most can't be bothered with those sorts of affairs.

It was stated that two Dragons have seats on the Accords as Freeholding Lords, one of them being Ferrovax. Not all Dragons bother with the Accords because they come with a lot of rules and obligations in return for any benefits they offer.

Where ARE the majority of dragons in the story? I only remember one, I think it was during one of the vampire masquerades.

Yeah, that was Ferrovax. He's a capital-D Dragon. According to interviews, Jim says he's an old-school, Asian-style Dragon, who is entrusted with maintaining some fundamental forces in the universe, like, gravity or light or some shit. Jim says there are only two left in existence.

The little-d dragons are the European-style scaly monsters. No word on how many, if any, are left.

Only two? I though 4-5, especially since Michael killed one.

Jim tells us - and it's probably in the Word of Jim thread - that Siriothrax, the Dragon Michael killed, was one of three left.

Ferrovax didn't appear impressed at Bianca's party, but was too busy being annoyed at Harry to have many words with Michael. Further Word of Jim indicates that might have been because Siriothrax had become corrupted somehow, and was accepting mortal sacrifice.

The question that raises, of course, is what was the cause of this corruption? It would have had to have been hella powerful to harm a Dragon...
