Came across this. I couldn't get through it but someone else might be able too.

Basically it's a fic where Ruby is Dexter. My problem with it is that the story is muddled by the author trying far too hard to drag Dexter elements that don't fit into RWBY into the story.

Okay, you weren't kidding when you said that Ruby is Dexter. What I mean by that is, that this is, so far, literally the first episode of Dexter written out in story format only someone did an strg-f and then replaced all the our world and Dexter names with RWBY stuff, and not exactly in a manner that makes sense.

Taiyang is Ruby's step-dad now and she was adopted. Ruby, of course, is Dexter, Yang is Debbie, Goodwitch is LaGuerta, Weiss is Doakes and so on.

The doesn't make sense part comes into play when you realize that they are still supposed to be in school, Ruby is still a bloodsplatter expert but also 15, a student, and leader of Team RWBY. Weiss is still her partner, Goodwitch is an incompetent professor and only good at politics, I am actually not sure if Ren and Nora are the same age as in canon or if they have taken the place of the two kids of Dexter's girlfriend, but they play that role.

In that regard, nothing makes sense and trying to figure things out is giving me a headache. They say that they are huntresses and hunters but they are clearly doing the canon policework from Dexter yet are referred to as professors and hunters. None of the rwby weapons and abilities either.

Basically, it tried to blend RWBY and Dexter in the worst possible way imaginable.

On the other hand, outside of the consistency and logic, it is written in an engaging way, because even though so much stuff is wrong and dumb, you still know what the author is trying to say and the writing in the sense of making the reader connect to Ruby/Dexter is actually competent and effective.

I am really disappointed though. I had hoped for canon RWBY, that setting and all, only Ruby has this urge to kill. Instead, it's a Dexter story with a paintjob that doesn't quite make sense.

Can't really recommend it though. 2/5 If you ever were curious about the show Dexter though, check it out, should give you a solid view into that show.

edit: have been continuing due to morbid curiosity and there are instances where when Weiss speaks, the story says he. Now, I thought it was a typo but only until the story referred to some people with their Dexter names and i realized it was because Doakes is male in the show but was replaced by Weiss in the fanfic so the author wasn't able to change every he to she with her.. Hell, chapter 21 forgot to replace a Deborah as Yang, so, not sure if the author is copy pasting from a script and giving it minute adjustments or from someone else fanfic that novelized the show, which is a pretty shitty thing to do.

edit 2: end of chapter 21, author notes say this:
so maybe that's the reason that real dexter names and genders bleed through here and there but dunno, doesn't improve the story but at least it would be better than the alternative.

That does sound like total ballsack.

Though, tbf, Nemrut, aren't you a pretty big fan of Nugar's People Lie? And iirc and the first few chapters were basically Fight Club, some parts almost ripped line for line.

It could be, has been years since I've read People Lie and when I read it back then. Yeah, the part where Hinata is supposed to lose to Ino or something, right? Or am I remembering it wrong?

I don't know about the line for line stuff, really can't remember Fight Club that well but I'll take your word for it, but the difference I think is that People Lie payed homage in an admittedly lazy way in that regard but over all did plenty of new stuff with it and in the rest of the story that was all the author where with this story I am all but certain the author stole it from somewhere and just replaced names in a slapdash manner to make it loosely RWBY.

So preface this RWBY fanfiction recommendation by saying this story is barely a RWBY fanfic. It's a complete AU set in a Victorian era world changed by the advent of Dust technology (naturally led by the Schnee Dust Company) with very few links to canon.

Weiss and Blake are the main characters, with their backgrounds reasonably similar conceptually to canon (minus Beacon) - Weiss being the heiress to the SDC and Blake being a criminal working for the White Fang (except here, the Faunus are the result of a shady human/dust experimentation).

Most of the other RWBY characters - including Ruby and Yang - do not exist. There's a few cameos from characters who appear briefly, like General Ironwood, Adam Taurus, CRDL, etc, but not really in any major role.

Despite the pairing, this story is a straight up thriller/adventure. Blake, fueled by desperation to save herself and her comrades, breaks into the Weiss compound to try to steal information. Weiss, having just recently turned 21, wants to make her first mark on the company by bringing a mysterious thief to justice and identifying who they work for. We follow the two as Blake tries to follow the leads to information on the research done on them, while Weiss follows Blake, slowly starting to realize she has uncovered some really disturbing stuff her company has been involved in.

Both characters are likeable and have their own interesting journeys through the plot. The interaction/relationship between the two makes for a nice and natural progression from bitter enemies, to rivals with a mutual respect, to comrades, to friends.

Where the story falls over a bit is the last transition from friends to lovers. The problem with having two very intelligent, introspective characters is it sort of kills any big emotional climaxes and makes the whole thing feel very dry. It's not a huge detriment to the story as it is a very small component.

However, the issue with the lack of emotional climaxing is not really limited to the romance. My main gripe with this story is the whole story follows a sort of constant level of tension - there's no big scenes or sections that you can really point to as being climatic. So while I enjoyed reading it, a week later I had already lost all my hype for the story.

Overall though, I do think it has been a decent read and have been enjoying the updates coming out on it. It is a refreshing read for the RWBY fandom (even if it is so AU it barely qualifies). 4/5

Team RWBY are sent out on a long mission to clear up a patch of desert of Grimm. Tension rises between Weiss and Ruby. That's about it. The writing is pretty solid. The characterisation is fine but I've definitely seen better. Scissoring. Obviously.

It's a RWBY SI where the protagonist is reincarnated as a grimm. He keeps his intelligence but Salem can read his thoughts. So she learns the entire plot of the series (and everything else about our Earth) a decade before canon.

I loved it. It's not too dark but it's not fluff. It isn't a mystery/thriller where the SI has to lex luthor his way around Salem. But it's a pretty unique story and I haven't read anything like it before.

It's just finished Part One and Part Two so far doesn't even have the SI in it. I know DLP loves really dark takes on canon and this isn't it. But that's sort of why I love it.

There needs to be a warning for shadenight fics. "All interesting conflict will be resolved within a chapter or two in the most bland way possible. In exchange, update rates which will blow your mind."

Professor Arc is now 'finished', through to the end of Season 3 of the show. He's said he'll continue the story if RWBY releases a new storyline that Professor Arc can adapt, as S4 was not good for that.

I think I'd rate the story 4/5 overall.

    So, Crimson Memories just updated.

I can't buy Weiss getting picked as leader over Ruby. It's going to create conflicts and it feels like drama for the sake of drama.

I can't say Professor Arc was a good read but it was fun/enjoyable read. You need to kill your suspension of disbelief and bury it in your backyard tho...

I dropped Professor Arc around the time his parents and sisters came to visit. The way that Jaune behaved and made all the main RWBY and JNPR girls bitchy and antagonistic towards his family for rightfully being skeptical about him bullshitting his way into a position of authority simply because they didn't know he was lying and manipulating them was just unbearable to me, it sucked out whatever enjoyment I got out of it despite it using most of the tropes that I hate.

So yeah, it got to the point where it's weird charm and technical skill couldn't carry its shitty harem premise anymore, at least to me.

Yeah I'm more able to turn off my SoD as long as the story is fun and the writing is good enough.

Also, it helps a lot that he updates like clockwork.

He mentioned in the author's note to a different story (I think white sheep, which I personally enjoy more than professor arc) that he is going to try to keep his comedy stories comedies from now on, which was part of the issue with professor arc. Its lowest points were when it transitioned to drama, and it became less humorous as the story went on as it became increasingly serious.

Not this time fate, one of his other works, started as a drama and had a lot of comedic moments. Personally I thought it was funnier than professor arc. As someone whose main experience with Peggy sue stories is harry potter, I found it refreshing to read a story where going back in time to a younger self does not automatically grant the same power due to needing physical training. I found some of his other stories unreadable though.

Man. Just finished Professor Arc. Started off amusing enough all things considered, but agreed that it lost its charm when it got serious and abandoned all its jokes. To its credit, though, the Battle for Beacon was handled fine enough... provided your suspension of disbelief is stronger than Jaune's plot armor.

    Particular low points were:
-Jaune's parents coming to town. The plot was mishandled near entirely what with it being entirely one-sided despite his family being totally in the right. It was also the point where the fic most noticeably gave up on the students as characters and just melded them together as "Jaune's fangirls" with the only sentiment/attachment I had for them was from the source material. By nature a fanfic'll trade off that, but if that's the only thing I have going for me then you've fucked up. The Jaune vs Dad fight was something of a stretch on its own, then got absurd when afterward Jaune thinks that he may have been able to take Winter. Like, fuck off.

-"Trained with Neo" is basically a magic wand that is used for the occasional joke but also the justification for Jaune lasting more than ten seconds in any fight ever because of dodging. But he still doesn't know how to attack properly. Although, to be fair, this is a Super-Jaune fic, so I suppose the reader should know what they're getting into to start off with.

-Pulling the trigger on the pairing. This isn't a bitch about shipping because I give zero fucks about shipping in any fandom. But the harem premise was only amusing because it was never taken seriously and based on his "magnetic personality" or whatever bullshit. Having him actually enter a non-comedic relationship killed this whole set of jokes, and then there's the fact that the relationship itself was just... this is the wrong kind of ridiculous on like all levels.

-I have to laugh that the response to reviews very rightfully calling out how stupid OOC Coeur wrote Glynda was "well, I'm just showing you what she could be".

-So much of the "intrigue" on Jaune's part was just... just a headache. I came here to laugh, dammit.

-jfc rein in the author's notes. It's absurd. You don't need them every chapter. You don't need multiple of them every chapter. You don't need multiple long ones every chapter. Hate to sound like a dick about it but I'm here to read your story, not your tumblr blog. I'm sorry your job is hard, but this is not the place to vent about it.

On the plus side, when the story was entertaining, it did a fine job of it. Yang and Blake's lesbian relationship made for a nice recurring joke a few times. I should not have found Port as funny as I did. Hell, the teacher dynamic as a whole was one of the better parts of the fic (mostly). Neo verged on being overplayed at times, and same with the harem pretense at large, but credit to Coeur for not crossing the red line on either.

For a good long while Professor Arc shaped up to be a nice guilty pleasure fic. It'd be great if it decided to be that again.

Yeah, I ended up viewing the character / character relations as kind of like a sitcom, Jaune is the main character and everyone else is exactly what need to be at any given moment to enable Jaune's wild ride.

e: The pairing was... forced, and it was definitely more amusing when everyone else was trying to set themselves up with Jaune. The story taking itself too seriously or trying to were definitely the worst parts.

Hopefully by the time the continuation rolls around, Coeur will have a better idea of how to control the seriousness though I'm unsure of the extent he actually sees it as a problem.

    I'll read anyway though, heh.

It's nothing amazing, but it's a very pleasant time waster. The setting and world building is fantastic, while the plot is a bit thinner. The world's backstory is dribbled out at a very nice pace. It's one of those extremely AU stories, to the point where it can honestly barely be called a RWBY fanfic, but I quite enjoyed it.

Premise seems to be that humans came to settle a world thousands of years ago, there was a race of beings already present (Fae, who seem to be like extremely nature loving Faunus) already present but they still keep themselves hidden as much as they can from humans, to the point where they're a myth. Ruby is of a bloodline tasked with helping keep them at mythical status while Weiss's father is intent on settling their lands.

Technology is highly advanced for both groups, Humans being through standard scifi advancements and Fae being through highly symbiotic/magical style.

It's neat because neither side is depicted as being perfect- though the Fae are nominally the good guys they're flat out described as a fascistic society.

The weakest points are the romantic plot points (by fanfiction standards it's well above average, but there's still a bit of annoying angst). Also, at points Winter's issues get well... ridiculous, though it's mostly played for dark comedy. Oh, and there's also some annoying navel-gazing dreams.

I just finished it and need a bit more time to digest, tentatively it's between 3.75-4/5 for me.
