    Hey DLP,

    As a result of many conversations, complaints, thought, and the last DLP Improvement thread, we've decided to go ahead with an eventual move to Xenforo given no true showstoppers.

    While the full rationale can be explored in the DLP Xenforo Migration document (feel free to add comments), here are the basics:

    • vB 3.8.x will never be updated again; old codebase with potential security holes
    • Reskinning vB is a lot of work, vB templates aren't the friendliest.
    • We'd like to be on a forum being actively developed
    • We'd like to be on a forum with an active {support,modding,userbase} community
    • Mobile access needs to be a priority

    We're looking at making this happen in the next 3 weeks or so, as that's when I have some time off to spend making it happen.

    Thoughts? Opinions?

    I do want to make it clear that DLP's culture will not be tainted by things like multiple badges and other hallmarks of forums like SB and SV. While they too are Xenforo-based, we will do it ourselves the way we like. We're looking to make it as close to a 1:1 migration as we can, except where everything just works a little better.

    A very initial import of our data to Xenforo can be found at https://forumsdev.darklordpotter.net/, this is where we'll be experimenting and building skins. You can login, but permissions might be a little goofy until I spend some time fixing them.

    I need to stress that the current skin is not indicative of what the end result will be by any means.

    As strange as it will be to get used to DLP without vBulletin, if it helps with accessibility and it ends up easier for the staff to make the changes they want then it has to be a good thing.

    Saying that though, I hate everything and want to die.

    I clicked the link. The Holy Green was kept, but the shade is wrong - you can't see anything on it. Thus, I hated everything instantly.

    I didn't click the link because I know I will hate everything and now I want to die.

    Nothing against mobile and touch-friendly access, but don't do this thing where you scale up the buttons to 3m² and the font size to 173468pt for everyone, pls? I don't know why people do this. Making sites phone/tablet friendly does not mean it has to be fugly on desktops with ridiculous proportions, but apparently, a lot of people don't know that.

    It only really scales things when the screens actually fit the dimensions of said devices, Sesc.

    Even then it's not egregious.

    Agreeing that the colours (edit: of the text) are shit and too dark to have good contrast. Except for the quotes which are the most lurid sickly green I've ever seen on a webpage.

    With the design in the forumsdev, you've replaced the forum description which I found hugely useful when I just joined, for the largely useless numbers of threads and posts. Can't you swap round the text and if you really want have the numbers as the onhover?

    I mean, does anyone actually care about how many threads and posts are in each forum? I know I don't, but there may be a huge demand for it or people may have memorised the number of threads and know theres a new story when the number goes up. Which is an idea so ridiculous if it's true I hate everything and want to die.

    Sorry Immet, but...

    I use numbers instead of tags at AO3 and ffnet. I'm at the point where I type in a character ID # (ffn) or search word (ao3) and then glance at result count and see if it's moved before I bother to look at the list of results.

    :<

    However, between DLP having sensible limits on tags, the 'new posts' link combined with 'ignore thread', such is not the case on this forum. DLP is beautiful.

    Raven told me that tags are much better in the new forum, so I for one will not waver in support of our glorious leader.

    So, remember that part where I said.

    And then everyone started whining about the skin?

    I literally opened up the colors and manually adjusted them by eyeball.

    Calm your tits.

    I hate your eyeballs and I want them to die.

    Works surprisingly well on this out-of-date, locked-down version of IE (*shudder*) they make us use here at work. I'm down.

    I for one welcome our new Xeno overlords.

    Only half serious. I have a huge weakness for vbulletin's blockyness, but it's understandable that it needs to change at some point. My feelings are just a byproduct of nostalgia anyway. This is a fair change. Especially considering the points outlined in the original post.

    Best of luck ironing out the kinks, eh.

    I'm probably misunderstanding what you are saying. The screen of the device to fit the dimensions of the device?

    Anyway, like I said, I didn't check :p (I was in a hurry). It was more a general thing, because I've seen sites become terrible to use for non mobile folks.

    I checked now -- it's useless to add feedback at this stage, because everything is going to change ten times, but for what it's worth, on my screen, e.g. the forum pictograms and the standard font in posts are twice as large as the old ones.

    Responsive Design only kicks in when the screen size is below certain width.

    For example: 800px, 610px, 480px or 340px

    The current xenForo font setting are:
    Code:
    font-size: 11pt;
    font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif;
    Versus vB DLP's:
    Code:
    font: 10pt verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;

    It'd actually be really sweet if we got benchmark updates for how the redesign is going. Maybe every two-three days into dev, but that's just an uneducated suggestion. It could be something as simple as the screen grabs already posted. Then again that risks slowing the overhaul dramatically if feedback is too intense.

    That said, it would allow the community to respond to design/ layout changes in a way that iterates rather than isolates.

    Then again I'm sure the mods have enough on their plates with overhauling jazz already.

    I clicked on the link and surprisingly didn't care much about the color or whatever.

    But when I tried logging in it said I was banned. o_O

    I hope it's not indicative of my future and merely indicative of permission problems.

    So this is the forum software AH and SB is using. I hope it doesn't have that followed thread notification problem like they do that seems to only notify you of new thread posts when you've recently viewed the thread.

    I think people are just being jokingly obtuse. Everyone seems to agree that the move to Xenforo, while sad, is something that needs to go ahead.

    People will always find something to bitch about for the lulz but most of us will be happy with the final skins.
