    My problem isn't with an OC Harry, he kind of needs to be. All I was saying is I like the starting position of Harry's history, and who he is to other people. After that I like to see him bent into new shapes and do interesting things. That is what I meant when I said I like him as the primary character, not that he has to stick to his canon self. I don't believe I ever talked about liking his canon character - if anything I've done the opposite. I just like his starting point and the world...

    This totally depends on the history being provided by the story. There's no reason that 1,000 years ago muggles may have very easily been able to find it, in that particular fic. In canon that does seem to be the case, though our knowledge is limited in that area. Here you're triggering another pet peeve which is acting as if all canon facts apply to fanfic for some reason while at the same time, I assume, being completely ok with other changes from canon you deem more 'right' in the fic....

    Sure, in canon. Doesn't have to be in fanfiction, and he's the main character that canon is pretty much entirely built around. He's the one I actually care about the most and so much can be done with him. I just don't really have much interest in anyone else as the primary character. I'm not saying they're all terrible and nobody should be interested, but I'm not.

    Yep. Really there are only four routes that I can think of to any story. Harry wins through deus ex machina. Voldemort for some reason becomes retarded. Voldemort is completely ignored in the story, or at least not the primary focus, allowing for a whole new playing field level to be built. Harry becomes a genius like Tom Riddle was as a teenager and actually becomes competent. The first two are boring and really stupid.     I started doing that a couple of years ago. Unfortunately searching trying to search for stories with main character X with no pairing is extremely inefficient, mostly because of tagging issues. Either The story is tagged with that character only but has a pairing anyway, or it's not tagged with any characters (these I never find because I'm not searching with zero filters), or it's tagged properly but because its tag type is a subset of everything else you have to skip by all of that...

    Good ol' DLP. Teaching me something exists then teaching me to hate it immediately. EDIT: Eh, I can't truly hate all of those examples. Like this one, Take the 'the' before bad out of the sentence and I don't think it's all that horrible. 'He felt like complaining', also isn't too bad. To me anyway. Maybe my brain has just been rot by too much fanfiction over the years though.

    What? How does that work exactly. The Fidelius hides a location, I can't imagine how it could protect something like that. I mean how does that get found out?     Yep, any story I go into knowing it's 3/5 material at best like that I generally skip the prologue. If I actually find myself missing information I skip back but generally I find it makes no difference.

    I never read it, surprisingly it never seems to make a difference that I don't. I don't think people are doing it for word count, I think they actually believe it's necessary to make their fic more authentic. "Well you see, the books did it". It's just annoying coming across this cookie cutter shit a decade later, repeatedly.

    I was mainly speaking about after his return however this is still false. Throughout the entire series, from book 1, everyone is terrified of him and won't say his name.     People, anyone, casually insulting or making fun of Voldemort. Nobody does this, not even Harry or Dumbledore, who are some of the few who can even bring themselves to say his name. It's frankly insulting to the character when random side characters refer to Voldemort in funny or silly ways. No, he's terrifying, you are terrified of him, STOP.

    I've never found one I enjoyed because I haven't looked. Why would I intentionally look for stories in a category I really don't like? What gets me is surprise slash, no tags, no warnings, nothing. Admittedly I know the signs a bit better these days so can usually feel it coming.

    Yeah but it's the way the word shell is used, every single time. Of course then there's the fact that someone - Harry - has to get him to 'come into his real self' like that's he knows what that is and it's his responsibility to make it happen.     Depends. It's very possible you are right and it was never really expanded upon in canon. But there's nothing wrong with using the idea in fanfiction. It just turns out most fics using the idea suck, either because A. most fanfiction sucks, B. it links in with marriage contracts and harems. Which actually ties in with point A.

    I see no issue with the idea of a a custom wand. Unfortunately it generally ends up being hand crafted with 6 cores that give Harry super magic. The idea is fine though.

    My problem with it is it's done so commonly on the side. It's just mentioned almost in passing for no reason other than to try and make her interesting and rarely if ever has any point. Now a fic starring Luna might be different, but I don't read those.
