Same on why Herc is a 4. It’s stated in one of the FSN routes - HF I think, when Shirou is copying Nine Lives Blade Works - that it’s just a pale shadow of Herc’s real NP Nine Hundred Shooting Heads, which he used to basically behead every single head of the Hydra simultaneously.

Really, all Berserker class does for Herc is knock his STR up to bonkers levels. It’s a bad trade for his mental capacity and NP.

Also, Apocrypha is fucking great, and you can fight me. Apocrypha to me is all the things I liked about the various Fate animes distilled and streamlined.

I’m not going to say he isn’t a little blank at times, but are you saying Shirou is a cornucopia of flavor? At least Sieg has the excuse of literally being like a homunculus and actual 2 year old. Shirou had like a decade and change after the Fuyuki fire wiped him to develop a personality beyond ‘sword hero’.

 

If it wasn't for UBW (which is obviously cool), I don't think I'd have ever interacted with the Fate universe given how much I hate Shirou as a character.

Jon has informed me that my opinion has been tainted by horrible fanfiction adaptations of him, which is probably true, but still. He's horrifically simple and uninteresting.

 

I'd recommend reading the VN. The anime (even ufotable's adaption) really don't do him justice. Not that they could, mind you - a lot of my appreciation for Shirou came from his narration, and that's difficult to translate into anime form. He's a lot more complex than the anime suggest, and a lot more likable than his fanfiction counterparts. That said, your mileage may vary - a lot of VN readers hate him as well.

 

VN Shirou is actually a very complex character whose superficial blandness is just a paper thin thing to disguise how much of a fucked up person he is inside his head. He makes Artoria mindset look healthy in comparison. I despise Shirou as a protag because of that, but he certainly isn't a Blandy McBland dude like all fanfics and animes make him, so he can be forced into the cliche stuff of a harem hero.

Archer is someone I like a lot more, and while the change of mindset between them is too great for simple time and some events to explain it to my satisfaction, it does show he didn't completely abandoned his early mindset.

 

VN Shirou is much better liked than his anime counterparts, yeah, but even VN Shirou isn't the most relatable character around. I mean, he's not the alien sword machine fandom loves to depict him as; he's self-conscious about his height, has a crush on the school idol and doesn't admit he likes household chores because they aren't manly hobbies, so no "distortion" that marks him as an alien among men.

Even so, his set of priorities is distorted though, and that makes it hard to relate to the conflicts he undergoes. On top of that, the anime almost goes out of its way to make him as bland as possible. The transition of medias makes it hard to give him justice, but showing a little of his inner thoughts every now and then would help. A lot. An example is that scene from UBW when Rin went to his class to invite him to the rooftop. My memory is fuzzy but I'm fairly sure he was well aware of what she was doing and played dumb just to fuck with her. The anime really needs to give him more moments like this.
