    You'll quickly find "Dumble-dork" is a fast conversation stopper around here because it speaks of high-school level characterization and depth of thought concerning plot. And, painting any character that two-dimensional, even Malfoy or Voldemort, is lazy at best.

    I mean, it's been a thing for well over a decade. What an odd thing to be bothered by.

    That's why it's a pet peeve.

    How do you feel about starting every sentence with "Um" or "But" or some other nonsense?

    Don't particularly care. I wasn't really addressing Harry saying it, because I agree, he wouldn't, but I don't get what's so "appalling" about reddit posts or whatever starting with it? Emotion is hard to get through text, so people add things like "I mean" to convey how they feel about it. Or at least I do.

    It's a valid/realistic dialog choice. People do speak that way quite often, however it would become grating after a short while. Maybe for a bit character it would be fine.

    I mean, what emotion did you get out of this post just now?

    It totally misses the tone in the HP series, moreover I can't remember a single time it was used, by any of the characters.

    I know I'm jettisoning some surplus autism here, but it really is a pet peeve thread for a reason.

    Because it doesn't communicate anything. It's a filler phrase without meaning except if you are literally following it up with an epexegetical statement. In other words, using "I mean" for anything other than continued explanation of a previous point does the exact opposite of what you want it to do.

    Now, if you use it in dialogue once or twice to show nervousness . . .

    However, that works specifically because it's supposed to be filler and carry no meaning.

    Even then the "I mean" is pretty pointless, but that sentence leads me to one of my other pet peeves, which is of course way too many questions asked, sometimes in dialogue, sometimes not, and generally in the perspective of a confident person.

    I realise I'm pretty close to keeping kids off my lawn, but this writing trend is infuriating. Ryuugi's Gamer fic was full of both, and it drove me insane.

    So are the mods banning that new guy, or nah?

    Also, when we have the message for guests saying "Why don't you register?" or something like that, we should also add something about having a minimal understanding of quality.

    I don't think being an idiot with poor taste is a ban worthy offense. We're all idiots at some point.

    I wanna hear his opinion on why Molly Weasley had to scream 'where is platform nine and three-quarters' even though she had been there many times, if not as an excuse to get Ron planted as his best friend so they could steal his Gringott's key.

    Fine then, J.M, pick me a new term to call Dumb-old-dork by; something easy to remember, and not too long-winded. I won't ask for it to be catchy, since 90+% of you seem to take that as a sign of a being a disgruntled high-school student, which I can assure you, I'm not...

    How about... "Dumbledore". Calling people names is inherently immature, regardless of the name.

    Look, I'm sorry, but I'm going to call him SOMETHING; because, as far as I'm concerned, his condescending paternalism and occasional blithering incompetence fucked Harry over so many times, even in canon, that by the end it wasn't even funny...

    Just in first year alone, they had

    * a troll breaking in
    * Fluffy locked up in a corridor
    * inter-house bullying - mainly by Malfoy/Slytherin
    * Quirrell's attempted murder at the Quidditch match - plus Hermion has to attack a teacher to help Harryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
    * Norbert
    * were given detention in a supposedly-forbidden area(DON'T tell me he would have been unable to over-rule McGonagall)
    * meeting Voldemort in the forest(Hermione or Neville COULD have been with him instead of Malfoy)
    * McGonagall prefunctorily(and rudely, I.M.O) dismissing them, even though they've figured out the biggest secret in the school
    * Finally, the obstacle course, the encounter with QuirrellMort, and Harry having the wraith fly through him...

    Go back to HPFF where that type of shit is tolerated.

    Your listing of reasons is invalidated by the fact that you defy comprehension. If anything, call him that old bastard, or that old fool or something, but his name is Dumbledore. So fuck you.

    I will agree to disagree; we obviously both have entirely different views of Dumbledore - I can accept that some nicknames are, perhaps, a tad childish/ridiculous, but I will never be a fan of the guy, and that's that...

    I'm even ambevialent about Snape, and we all know the prevailing view of his first Q. to Harry, based on the langugae of flowers; I think he could have been harsh enough to appease his house without being such a biased jerk...

    My pet peeve is when authors make indy!harry call the headmaster "Dumbledork".

    You're severely misunderstanding the issue here. We don't care what you think about Dumbledore. We care that discussions on the subject are adult-level discussions, and calling him anything but Dumbledore is childish. There are only a very few acceptable ways of getting around that. One is depersonalizing him by calling him Headmaster only. Another would be referring to him as Albus. Using only first names speaks of familiarity and therefore reduces stature. It's why you'll sometimes hear people first-naming other people in a debate, especially if it is in an interview.

    Other than that, I suggest if you want to be taken seriously at all on this forum, you present yourself like an adult.

    LOL, who you throwing shade at friend?

    I read something today about Hogwarts Sentience. I think ultimately I like this underlying thought behind this idea, but I have never seen it executed well.

    Also, as a throw back, wand crafting. Read a fic where his wand was made by him just casting his magic out to feel the materials and got the most super wand ever. Reminded me of all the indy fics where as his first bit of rebellion he got a second wand, or a wand more in tune to his magic.
