Just in case anyone else didn't: It's because the "H" is the eight letter of the alphabet, so 88 refers to HH, which is short for Heil Hitler.

 

That sounds like a 4chan prank, like the ‘ok’ gesture meaning white power thing.

 

That's weird; I've seen things saying the 'ok' gesture is actually Satanic, representing 666, but I've never heard it as a white power thing.

 

The klan gesture your thinking of is done with the pinky being held with the thumb, not the forefinger and thumb. It never really caught on, I assume because it’s used so universally to just mean three.

As for the satanism angle, I’ve heard that as well but never from any source I’d think of as reputable.

 

Believe it or not, when groups of people hold beliefs that many other people would want to kick their teeth in for, they find ways to signal those beliefs to likeminded individuals, while hopefully avoiding the aforementioned volunteer dentistry. See also the 'Fourteen Words.'

Of course, because white nationalist types tend to be some of the dumbest motherfuckers on the planet, it never really takes long for large portions of them to completely miss the intended subtlety and just add it to the tattoos on their face, right next to the swastikas and lightning bolts.
