There is no way that can backfire. At all.

The poison is one that local animals have developed an immunity to since they evolved here, so I'm not sure what the backfire you see is.

No idea, but it's wildly publicized, and if you're picking up random meat off the dirt and eating it (while out in the wilderness) I don't think you have much of a case.

 

Unless they kill every single feral cat then I can't see this working very well. Catch-spay-release is much more effective over the long term than culling is as cats are pretty rapid breeders. The losses would be replaced very quickly in the aftermath of this, not to mention they'll have to deal with a resurgent prey population, which brings its own problems.

For the record, I'm pretty sure there's an English precedent about leaving traps out, especially if you know that unintended targets could fall in them. Most of what I remember from the original case is that some guy left some bear traps to protect his plants, but then the neighbor's stupid fucking peacocks walked into the traps, and somehow the peacock owner won. I'm hoping this precedent doesn't apply anywhere else, but someone's probably still going to be pissed when a domestic animal or human eats a death sausage.

 

It might not be enough poison to kill a human, even children who might eat sausages from the ground are a lot larger than cats.

 

The bigger concern is someone's dog keeling over because they dug one up or something. It's not likely, but I could totally see it happening, and if it does, you can expect a lawsuit about it. I know I'd be furious if that happened to my dog, after all.

 

Not to mention anything that kills feral cats could easily impact pet cats as well.

 

If you've just caught the cat, why the hell would you release it instead of shooting it?

 

The only thing that comes to mind is "any cat fucking a spayed cat isn't fucking a fertile cat, so that's less breeding going on", but it still doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

 

All I can think of is it would be hard to find the work force to commit genocide en masse.

In some cases they keep them alive so they're competing for prey with the fertile cats, though in this case, since they're trying to protect Australian species from competition, I would think it would make more sense to just kill them.
