He considered it, but decided against. From what I recall, the main reason that he didn't alter it for publishing was that he already had a very good story and didn't want to accidentally make it worse through over-cooking it.

No major changes. I was thinking about it, but once I actually sat down to edit things I realized there was a reason why I wrote things the way I did. While the latter half of the story definitely has a lot of flaws, fixing them would require structural changes to the whole plot, which would be... dangerous. I didn't dare overhaul the entire story like that and potentially end up with something worse. Besides, for all its flaws, I think the story turned out fairly well in the end. Amusingly, some of the stuff people complain about (the epilogue, for instance) I'm really, really happy with.
