You should read A Mother In Law's Love if you want variations on a theme of backdoor lovin'.

I think you give me too much credit. You'll find that most of the DLP authors who have written stories with this pairing--Vlad, Jim, Joe, and Heather, to name several--avoid the fanboy tropes and churn out very high quality tales. (Joe's Wastelands of Time and jbern's The Lie I've Lived are two of my all-time favorites).

Doesn't A Mother In Law's Love involve Harry and Molly?

I loved The Lie I've Lived, and I'm totally hooked to Wastelands of Time. Heather's story was abandoned wasn't it? I vaguely remember it having only two chapters...? What are Vlad and Jim's stories?

So far, the only person Harry's slept with is Milenka, a half-Veela exotic dancer he picked up in Bulgaria, so there may be some appeal to this group. But yes, it does involve Harry and Molly in a Soul Bond.

    Jim = Jim Bernheimer (jbern).

Poor Harry. Fate sure as hell fucked him over: soul-bonded to not just any Weasley, but fucking Molly. ... Canon Molly, right? (Or do you plan on making her, I don't know, better?)

    Vlad's story?

Agreed. Dagger & Rose is one of my favourite Harry/Fleur stories, so it's good to hear news on the sequel.

I only like these Harry/Fleur fics:

    1. Lie I lived
    2. See above

Wasteland of Time is well written but I just don't dig the whole AU universe. So much mythology, it is just not my thing.

I don't mind Dagger and Rose but again it was so damn AU, so frustrating. The ending felt like that Harry/Hermy fic by MeganReviews.

Is it so hard for someone to write a good HarryFleur?

    1. Make it 4th Year during the task.
    2. Don't give Harry any special training or anything, hell by the end of book 4 Fleur practically loved normal Harry, sure in a more brotherly way, but even that has potential.
    3. Don't give Harry a new cast of friends, why does he need new friends? Is Daphne really that much better than the bookworm or the weasel?
    4. Don't make a new enemy, why does this always happen! There is always like 10 different guys trying to off Harry.
    5. Most importantly, don't make him a fucking uber vampire!

I haven't found any fics like this, it doesn't make any sense! You would think someone would write something this simple.

This isn't limited to Harry/Fleur, naturally. The pairing should generally be a logical consequence of the plot. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't create a plot for the purpose of a pairing :p

Regarding pre-writing stories though, that really depends on the author. I admire everyone who does it, as the advantages are obvious (editing in hindsight, regular updates), but it's hard for me. It's just the reverse problem Pers spoke of: If I can't put something out and get immediate feedback, I'm more likely to lose interest. I see that just now; for one of my other fics, I wanted to get a complete story arch done before I updated it again. That's only ~30k words, and I feel myself getting annoyed because it drags and drags and I'm writing but the end is miles away.

If I'd try that with an entire story ... well, I not certain it'd ever get done.

It's been taking up three months so far (with no room to write any other story -- that much for my excuse as to why there hasn't been any update for The French Affair, since we're talking about H/F stories ... the next chapter is planned out, but the actual word count is something very unimpressive :?).

Edit: And Pers, good to hear about the D&R sequel, of course :)

Edit 2: Zero; IIRC, The Secret Diary of Fleur Delacour had something along those lines.

"Practically loved" is an exaggeration, atleast if you're referring to the last conversation they had moments before the Beauxbatons carriage left Hogwarts. She might've taken a liking to him, and has certainly changed from her original view of him. She does not love him nor view him as something as close as a brother.

All in all, your set points limit the parameters where good Harry/Fleur stories can emerge. Whilst points 3,4 and 5 might be sensible (3 and 5 more than 4 since I liked the idea of the Rosecrucians), number 1 and 2 is a waste of words.

I'm going to argue that it is. Primarily because it is difficult to maintain a consistent personality and characterization for Fleur. I've used her in Renegade Cause and one of the reasons I'm shying away from using her too much (currently, no ships is suiting that story just fine right now) is because it's hard to write Fleur in a way that is a.)intelligent, b.)not a Mary-Sue, and c.)not mind-bogglingly annoying.

And btw, Joe, if you're reading this thread, I'm just going to toss out the warning that your Fleur is getting close to Option B. Just warning you.

Anyways, I figured I'd drop the line and say that my sequel to Silence Game is going to feature Harry/Fleur (and Harry/Su Li - that little plotline is too good to pass up), in a context I don't think has ever been done before.

Expect it to be out in NC-17 WbA within a few weeks.

You can write a story just for the pairing, but you do need a plot to keep the story moving.

Back when I used to attempt to write, I'd have everything outlined, but I'd want to work on writing this scene or that scene and not the beginning of the story. That was just me, though... I think I have mild OCD. ;)

I can't wait for you to update The French Affair. Granted, I'm getting impatient for Fleur to meet Harry again, but I'm still enjoying the story. The characters are well-written and interesting, and the actual plot is suspenseful. I was at the edge of my seat while reading. :D

Fleur definitely doesn't have any strong feelings towards Harry. There just wasn't any time in Goblet where they could've developed. He 'saved' her sister, yes, but that only earned him gratitude and perhaps a future favor. (Oh, the things Harry should demand...)

Fleur is some-what powerful, intelligent, maybe wealthy, beautiful, and seventeen. Harry's an awkward little boy who is lacking.... This is why it's so hard for a Harry/Fleur fic to be written: you have to develop Harry enough that it's realistic for Fleur to be interested.

    Agreed.

Gasps. I demand a H/F pairing in Renegade... Nah, I agree: Harry is in way too much deep shit for him to even think about getting a girlfriend.

Dances. Harry/Fleur and Harry/Su Li...? That's going to be awesome.

Time was not the issue, in canon the thing preventing a relationship between the two was the mental and physical age. Another factor was the disdain Fleur carried from their first meeting which admittedly vanished at the second task, if not before.
Incorrect, this is why it's hard writing a realistic story with the two of them paired during the fourth year.

I'm probably one of the worst people to take writing advice from but why wouldn't you write that scene you really want to? If I were you I would just write whatever scene I want and then take it from there.

If you really never get around to writing certain necessary parts, then you can just rework some of the scenes you have written into one-shots wherever possible.

    Just my 2 cents.

Also, all this talk of sequels and updates to awesome stories is making me salivate.

Powerful as she might be, Harry beat her in the tournament. They both had help, and even if Harry had a more significant help, it's surely negated by 3 years of studying.

Intelligent? We don't know that. The only evidence to support that is that she was chosen by the goblet.

Beautiful she is, but Harry didn't seem to be overly affected by this, so if anything it might help his chances.

About Harry's shortcomings, it can easily be fixed is numerous ways. A friendly advise from Sirius, Ron, Hermione, even Dumbledore... alternatively there's the damsel in distress, reverse damsel in distress, bet, random meeting in a bar, get to know the enemy and fall in love with him, sick puppy who gets disappoints, and a million other cliches. Most of them would be a first with Fleur, and that's fucking sad.

Harry doesn't have to change all that much to be able to date, or court Fleur. Famous, good looks [basing this off of James], powerful, hero... he got plenty going for him. Also, he got Parvati [prettiest in Gryffindor] with ease, which shows willingness if nothing else.

You're right, but I still think that in canon there just wasn't enough time. Certainly in Goblet, Harry was too busy worrying about the Tournament to even think about approaching Fleur. However, I completely agree their mental and physical ages kept them from ever interacting on a more emotional level. Canon Harry is just... pathetic and frustrating, really.

Agreed. When I posted, I was thinking of a fourth year pairing because that's what Zero wanted. I think Jbern's The Lie I've Lived did this best, but Dagger and Rose was beyond excellent, too.

Briefly thinking about it, I think there are several ways for an author to start a Harry/Fleur relationship/friendship in fourth year:

    1) Harry gets even more offensive when Fleur calls him 'leetle boy'. I mean, you would think he'd have a really bad reaction to 'boy' considering the Dursleys.

    2) He's the Boy-Who-Lived. They must of heard of him even in France, and perhaps Fleur is interested in seeing how the boy savior lives, etc.

    3) Harry can withstand the veela charm - something I don't think would be common among male teenagers. Maybe Fleur finds it offensive that a mere boy can resist her charms.

    4) After Cedric's funeral, Fleur approaches Harry, and congratulates Harry... Maybe she asks how he's feeling which sparks an angsty conversation (rolls eyes now) and that leads to Harry and Fleur sending letters back and forth.

Those are all canon-following for the most part, and they involve changing only a small detail. Granted, they pretty much suck, but I tried, right? ;)

It was just silly, because I'd have scenes from the end of the story done, but not the actual first chapter. Bad OCD.

True, because there isn't any evidence that Fleur worked out the tasks herself.... However, it's still likely as the Goblet picked her as a champion, and what's power and muscle without the intelligence to wield it?

Idea 3 revolves around that. You would think Fleur would value personality over looks, because she's probably had her share of handsome idiots... but that's just my imagination running away with me. :D

Or like in Jeconais's Best Man where Harry helps with the wedding, and friendship ensues. Maybe Fleur is sick of the Weasleys and is having doubts about the wedding and Boy Hero steps in? You would think one would have doubts about marrying into a family that calls you Phlegm.

Agreed. Scrawny, though he is, Harry isn't hopeless; he has a lot going for him. He does, however, need a great deal of confidence, and that can come from having a talk with Sirius. I mean, Harry has faced Voldemort multiple times and survived.

Once again I have to disagree, if you reread the book you'll find that he spent plenty of time not angsting over the tournament, time which could have been spent chasing after Fleur. Not to mention that no matter what, a teenaged boy makes time for a chance to hook up with a girl.

1, At this point in time there is little, atleast if you view it from a perspective of normal human interaction, that could make Fleur drastically change her view of Harry. Any kind of power show or speech is likely to reinforce the image she already created around him.

2, She pretty much proved otherwise in the beginning of GoF, unless you wish to remake her into Ginny Close #32255 worshipping him from the start.

3, This point is debatable, it all depends on how you define the Veela Charm, it differs in nearly every story. Viewing it as an uncontrollable aura, it's pretty much a must for creating a viable Harry/Fleur story unless you wish to make Fleur into someone that uses her Veela Charm for personal gain. Which could make for an interesting story, whipped!Harry.

4, Skip the angsty conversation and it could be viable, if done correctly.

This is one of the best points starting a Harry/Fleur story imo. Or perhaps slightly earlier to plant the seeds of doubt. The age difference has lessened in practice, even though the separating years are the same.

Getting confidence from a talk with Sirius is overdone imo, not in the Harry/Fleur genre but otherwise through the HP fanfiction world it is. Let the boy gain confidence like the rest of us mortals, give the moron a pint.

Oh, god, anything but that! I take it back, I take it back!

I didn't think Fleur would worship him. I was thinking that she would be slightly interested in him... as in curiosity, but we can scratch that idea.[/quote]

Even if it's uncontrollable, Fleur might still be insulted if Harry can withstand it. Or maybe it sparks Fleur's curiosity because you have this teenage boy who's the Boy-Who-Lived, isn't arrogant, saved her sister, doesn't want to be in the tournament, and can resist her charm. So she decides she wants to know the mystery behind Harry Potter.... I don't know, but excuse me while I wretch at how cheesy that sounded.

It's Harry; there has to be angst.

Thank you. Maybe it angers/annoys Harry, and he takes it upon himself to apologise. It's not unbelievable: Harry's noble; the Weasleys are being childish; Fleur's being isolated; he's been called names his entire life; he understands that she just wants to be accepted... Blah, you catch my drift.

I don't care how he does it, as long as he does.

Personally I think the only way to even hook up Harry/Fleur is if you make the fic a well written comedy. I mean it. Look at Lie I Lived:

    80% Humor, 10% rage, 5% angst, 4% cursing, 1% romance?

The fact is, Fleur is funny. She is comedy relief, in more ways than one. Her accent, her aura, her bitchiness. There is something seriously wrong with that girl! But in a LOL kid of way.

I don't know about you, but I honestly can't take her seriously, "Arry I 'ove ou,"

    wtf?

Yes! I am going to write a 100,000 word intelligent story about a girl who can't even say my name. I'll get right on it...

    Pourquoi?

I grew up in Montreal and even by French standards Fleur is pretty weird, I am not from France so Tinn might think differently. Despite all of this she has her good points, as long as the fic isn't crack I think it is possible to write a good HarryFleur.

90% of HarryFleur stories are angsty angsty, and all the butt-rape gets old really fast. All I ask is for a fic that actually puts a smile on my face, without resorting to an orgy?
