Off to force myself to write. I've already closed 7 tabs of shows I'd planned to watch and 2 PDFs in an attempt to get some work done.

Well, Andromalius' speeches do inspire people, don't they? :)

I had a Ravenclaw Harry story that I had put int he WbA some time ago. I'll consider myself bitch slapped into doing something about it. Harry/Fleur was always on the mind.

@Andro: Jesus Christ man, were you saving that up or something?

Well, an hour and forty-five minutes later and I'm already fighting the urge to toss my hands up in defeat and go watch some shitty anime.

I've managed to get down nearly one thousand words, proof read many times over as I have the horrible habit of editing as I go. (It will likely still contain numerous mistakes.)

I will always be in awe of people who can churn out 10k chapters on a regular basis.

A bit of trivia, and perhaps extra motivation for those writing.

Something I noticed a while ago, but didn't really make much note of is that Hermione/Fleur has 101 stories on Harry/Fleur.

Thats right, 326 stories vs 225 according to FF.net

Guess those sexually confused teenage girls like Fleur.. I don't know if thats a bad thing or not. Though I think I sounded creepier than Vash just then.

After spending most of the day since Andro's speech plotting an epic fic, CB linked this to me.

On the first page of this thread, Rin posted a plot idea. I took it up today. So did this guy apparantly.

I've actually got a plan of a story with a Harry/Fleur pairing being worked on, but I'm currently re-reading the Harry Potter series/making notes and looking through the Lexicon so I don't make any stupid mistakes or fuckups.

I'm also making trips into researching Celtic and Nordic mythology.

I've made about 30 pages of notes/conjecture/conclusions so far just on the first few chapters of the first book alone, but if I steamroll through, I'll get the series done before Xmas and the story outline finalized before New Year.

(I'm also trying to avoid many of the shitty cliches that authors fall into when writing the genre I'm making a trip into, so I am taking a leaf out of Stephen King's/Clive Barker's style of horror).

(Due to health issues, I've got so much free time on my hands I'm surprised I haven't gone completely insane due to cabin fever).

I'm also working on my syntax abilities: I don't want to start writing my fiction, only for it to be screwed up due to my own stupidity.

Wow, that seriously sucks. It was just posted today too. If it turns out to be crap, I nominate you to write a replacement.

Dunno. Obviously still really early but I was not impressed so far. At the beginning, Harry's reaction to the fact that he made some poor decisions over the last few years leans more towards 'I should always listen to Hermione' than it does to 'I should think things through more carefully'.

I don't understand why Harry apparently believes even for a second that Ron doesn't care about his safety. They were both 13 year olds who wanted to try the best broom in the world. It had nothing to do with Ron's level of caring for Harry's safety.

Also I was a little irked by the fact that prefects were handing out the homework assignments on the train. Just seemed kind of unrealistic, it's the type of thing that should have been handled by the Head of House before they left school.

Likewise, Harry writing about his godfather in his first letter to his 'pen-pal' bothered me. Presumably they'll find out each others identities sooner rather than later. After that Harry's rather famous, it wouldn't be that hard for a reasonably bright person to deduce that Sirius is his godfather. The whole godfather situation is the kind of information that Harry's smart enough to know to keep under wraps.

But these are all minor quibbles so far. I hold out hope that this will turn out well.

And if not, Seratin is always lurking in the wings.:)

    It's not crap.

It's good, it may be destined for the library level quality if it avoids major errors, the general quality holds, and the forum is kind to a light read. I'd love to see Seratin take the idea too.

Ichor, that kind of dedication and thoroughness is admirable, but to be entirely honest, few will appreciate 100% to the letter accuracy, unless it's for your own satisfaction, in which case all the more power to you. You might not get started in forever, and the likelihood that you'll still miss an insignificant detail is high. I recommend checking canon to see if you're consistent on a case-by-case basis rather than spending hours rereading the book with note-taking that rigorous.

In contrast to Phantom's difficulties getting words onto paper, I have a 1653 word start on my fic from the last few hours that came really, easily, and if it weren't midnight I'd keep going. I have the entire beginning and middle section plotted out, it's an even better burst of inspiration burst than the one I got from my Italy plot. The only difference is that the writing/execution part is coming together with the good ideas. I'm very optimistic. Will probably hammer out the full chapter during winter break.

I actually had the idea to put Harry into the Middle Ages, maybe when the wizarding society wasn't that organized as it is nowadays, and wizards lived (without exposing themselves) together with muggles. The exact time would be somewhere in the Hundred Years War between England and France, which would give thousands of possibilities to enter Fleur into that equation... does that even work?

Well, for one, GrinningLizard is already doing Medieval!Harry in his Assassin's Creed story, and two, trying to fit Fleur into that would probably end up pretty lame. Only way I can see it working is if they somehow manage to travel back together.

Nope, I was actually implying Harry being living in the Middle Ages. Not sent back.

So Harry would be born and live a natural life in the middle ages? To do this you'll be eliminating the conflict between Voldemort and Harry the main underpinning of most Harry Potter stories. Not to mention you'll have removed Harry from every canon element that shaped his character.

Even in the most AU of worlds, or the most extreme time-travel no one does this completely. The Skitterleap retains canon characters put into a new world. Grinning Lizard's Harry still had has to deal with the effect of 15 years of canon on his character. Taure retains the events at Godric's Hollow in his story.

Your story idea would seem to entirely remove any recognizable part of the Harry Potter universe except the names Harry and Fleur. It would seem to be be completely about an OC who happens to be called Harry.

Did I say that I was to remove canon characters? No. As you brought up Skitterleap, think of a Skitterleap, with a different setting, and obviously different plot.

Misunderstood what you were getting at. It seemed to me you were talking about moving just Harry to the middle ages. I was getting images of Grinning Lizard's story except that Harry was born there instead of time traveling there.

Nah... probably my fault. Should have been clearer. Anyway, do you guys think this could work at all? I'm skeptical, tbh.

I'm not really sure. It would be really difficult. Since we were comparing the idea to the Skitterleap, let me use it again. Despite how obviously AU the Skitterleap is, it has the distinct advantage of diverging only 50 years or so before canon begins. The people, the culture, etc. are not so different from our own as to be unrecognizable. It has takes as its divergence events that occur during WWII. Alternative history (what if the Nazi's won) has been a staple of writing since WWII so it instantly makes people more comfortable with a a fanfiction that follows a very similar direction, down to having Grindelwald lead the Nazis.

The middle ages are a whole different kettle of fish. The culture is entirely different, attitudes are entirely different, technology is entirely different, etc. There is also literally no known information about wizard attitudes in the time period, nor do we have any real pre-established characters who can guide the fic. It just becomes much more diffifcult to pull off a truly immersive, believable world like the Skitterleap was.
