That may be so, but he behaves a lot older than he really is. I think he should sound older too.

I'm thinking more about not-quite-thirty "Narrator Kvothe" here, also, not so much the teenaged Kvothe.

To resolve the Kvothe being in line for the throne thing:

Just thought I would clear that up, since I don't remember seeing this mentioned back when it was being discussed.

This is one thing I honestly hope Rothfuss doesnt do. Kvothe does not need to be a king. He is the kingkiller, not the king. It would just be too cliche to have the boy who comes from nothing to become king.

Somewhere on The Name of The Wind, Sim and Wil are telling Kvothe that Ambrose is a noble and one in the sucession line at that.
Thing is.. They mention some people who are ahead of him, like Mae, Meluva.. and some more..
Now, could this arcanist dude - I forgot his name, maybe Caedius? - be trying to get Maer out of the way for Ambrose? As far as I can remember, no particular reason for the poisoning has surfaced as of now..

People keep mentioning the Maer as in line for the throne, so I must have missed something. My understanding was that the Maer's family was the former royal family of Vintas.
The Maer is not a member of the royal family, he is just an extremely powerful man who is all but king due to his wealth and influence.

Ambrose being in line for succession to the throne indicates that he is related to the Calanthis family in someway. If his father was killing off people between him and the throne the Maer would not be on the list. He may have to worry about the Maer deciding down the road that he wants to be king, but the Maer would not technically have to die for the Baron to become king.

You may be right. I looked up the section I mention and it is as follows
So yea.. They werent talking about the throne line per se...
But notice that Sim mentions the royal family as having "rank" above Ambroses father. One would think he is not in the line (at least directly).

I dont understand these things very well but, should the throne end up heirless is it so far fetched that Maer could be a candidate?

No it isn't far fetched if the royal family is completely decimated. I figure Ambrose is probably related in someway to the royal family. A cousin or a nephew maybe. You don't get to be part of the sucession discussion in a monarchy without being related to someone in the royal family.

If the family and immediate heirs of the royal family died in someway I could see the Maer deciding he wants his family's old throne back. But why be king with all that responsibility when you can be just as powerful and wealthy without the responsibility.

Oh god, I just finished this book. I want more o,o This book is absolutely amazing. Believe if or not, I reserved it at the library, but the wait list was freaking huge and I saw that one of them was in the hold shelf at the library I usually go to. Seeing nobody was around, I pulled up a kiddy chair from the children's section and pulled it up to the shelf. I stayed close just in case the person that actually reserved it came. So I sat there, between shelves, and read o,o I did this for a full freaking week too as the same person still had it under reserve in the hold shelf (WTF). But, due to the person's negligence, I finished it. :)

If Meluan is in line for the throne, then her marrying the Maer may put him in the line too.

A couple of things I have noticed that haven't been pointed out.

In relation to Caesure, when Kvothe receives the sword he is shown how to take it apart and care for it.

He also asks what to do if the sword breaks. The response he gets is quite negative and strong.

Naming seems to be related to shaping. When Fela demonstrates she knows the name of stone she uses the name of stone to shape the rock into her ring.

I think there is a potential link between Folly and Ceasure and that they are not necessarily different swords. Ceasure may have become Folly at the same time that Kvothe became Kote.

Felurian made the Shaed for Kvothe so he could remain hidden. Kvothe has seemingly become Kote to further hide and/or bench himself from the game to prevent further harm. Ceasure may be instrumental in combating the Chandrian and as such Kvothe has gone to great lengths to protect/hide it.

I also think that copper is quite significant. Iron is the bane of the Fae and demons. Copper is probably the bane of the Chandrian.

I think the copper mesh that is woven into the wall of the rockery is there to keep things out rather than keep things in.

When Elodin uses the name of stone to break down the wall he comments that it wasn’t there before. I think that the Amyr put that copper meshing into the stone sometime after Elodin last broke out. I also thing that the fact that Elodin didn’t expect it to be there is evidence that he is not Amyr.

Copper has also been used in other locks and doors.

I get the feeling people have begun thinking of the Amyr as boogiemen who are everywhere manipulating everything, which is kind of ridiculous. I don't think the Amyr had anything to do with the material of the walls changing TASB (Tenor/Alto/Soprano/Bass?). I think it was the university's masters changing the composition of the walls to make it more difficult for a trained (if cracked) arcanist to escape.

Copper has not provided any kind of barrier to any of the characters who have encountered it thus far appart from it's physical properties which match our own world. Elodin just used a metal or wooden rod (Can't remeber which) to physically break to mesh to pass it. To me that implies that copper has some kind effect on some group within the world similar to the effect of iron on the Fea/Demons.

He used a piece of the chair smashed against the window I believe. I'm more inclined to agree with TASB even though I've just heard the theory. Nothing we've seen has demonstrated any type of resistance to sympathy/Naming from copper. And it's constant use obviously means it does something, and the only other BBEGs we know of are the Chandrian. I'll have to give this some more thought. It does seem they are impervious to iron, 1) because one of them makes it rust away to nothing, and 2) if our conjecture and whatnot is correct, the Chandrian aren't really fae at all, but early early Namers or somesuch.

I know I'm knit-picking here, but this always irks me. A couple implies two, and you have far more then that listed, and you should have used a colon after 'out', not a period.

That's a fair theory, though I don't see any supporting evidence. And since Kote seems to regret what he has become, it doesn't seem very likely that he would mount a reminder of his failure in the main room. He's proud of that sword.

Kvothe isn't very interested in fighting anyone at this stage. He isn't secretly amassing power, he isn't getting any stronger. In fact, it would seem that he's lost nearly every power he had. I suppose it's possible that there's some crazy thing where he locks his power away only to get it back with interest going on, but that would be lame as fuck.

Firstly, there are no demons, only Fae. Secondly, why the Chandrian in particular? I doubt they would have survived so long with such a glaring weakness.

Firstly, it's the Rookery or Crockery. Secondly, why? The Rookery is a prison and contains nothing important aside from screaming inmates. Plus, the copper wasn't there before Elodin broke out, implying that it was placed to make it a more effective prison.

Why the hell would the Amyr be involved in any way with the University's mental institution? :facepalm

Such as? Examples would be nice. I'm not disagreeing, but that's already been said, so something else to go on would be great.

He uses the chair leg. That said, I think you missed some of the significance of what you just said. Elodin, the Master Namer, had to resort to physical force to get rid of the copper. When it would have been easier to just say it's name. It's possible that he just doesn't know the name for copper, or that he couldn't be bothered to make the effort to find it's name, but since we're looking for the significance of copper... I propose that copper is resistant to magic somehow.

    Speaking of which...

Probably by wiping out most sources where you'd ever hope to find that knowledge. I don't necessarily back the idea that copper is Chandrian kryptonite (being immune to Naming somehow might also fit), but there is that.

The door in the Archives, the lock on Kvothe's chest... maybe one or two more I don't remember. Both are obvious "DO NOT ENTER" sort of things, and copper isn't exactly known for being resilient material, so there has to be some reason it's used on them.

(Also, stupid font color is stupid, and I can't figure out how to change it to default. And the spacing is screwy too.)

Bast shows resistance to iron when Chronicler uses it on him. Copper doesn't have to be a one shot kill device.

Elodin broke out with the same method he used the first time. The copper didn't seem to make it much a more effective prison at all.

Perhaps there is more to the Rookery than we know at this point?

I'm pretty sure Kvothe's chest had a copper lock and the door in the archives had copper as well?

That is possible, however I think picking up the chair leg and using mundane force to break through the mesh after naming the stone to dust is also in keeping with the quirkiness of Elodin's character. He doesn't mind getting his hands dirty.

The significance of copper everywhere may simply reflect its relative ease to extract (though you need electrolysis to get it pure enough for electrical wiring, they don't need that). Though I don't think it's as nearly as common as some ITT make out.

It's not like everything can be made of aluminium.

Also, about the sword, when Fela makes her ring, she actually breaks a larger stone in order to reach a smaller shape emblematic of stone. When Folly was introduced, wasn't the description something like, 'if you distilled the essence of a dozen swords, you would get Folly'? Maybe Caesura went through a similar process, becoming even more boss, or maybe thats how Kvothe names Iron. Which might also explain why it's named Folly, because he accidentally changed it and now the Adem hate him for breaking their sword;)

At first the copper thing seems ridiculous, but if you wanted to keep an insane namer in a prison, you'd weave as many different types of metals and woods and cloths and feathers and random bullshit to make it harder for them to name. The use of copper alone does suggest some importance.

Am I the only one who sees here that in a list of people in line for the throne, the Maer is on the list? So he is in line for the throne, but is also an extremely powerful nobleman. Also, it isn't very common at all for the 12th in line to the throne to come to power. Ambrose may be powerful, but not knocking off kings powerful.
