Wow. That's a hell of a lot to pay for a dog. That said, we spent £400 on our pup (pedigree bichon frise), which is near enough $650.

From what I've seen it's not uncommon to pay $500-800 for pureblood and well-bred kittens or puppies, so these aren't that much more expensive (relatively). Damned nice looking dogs too, especially if they're right about the good temperment and high intelligence.

Get your animals from the pound or, better yet, a no-kill rescue or shelter. Not only are you saving a fuckton of money, but you're possibly saving the life of an animal that will love you. At the very least, you're giving a home to one that was in a tough situation.

Both of our cats are from a no-kill shelter, our one dog was found on the road with four of her sisters, and our other dog is a Great Dane from a rescue. All excellent and loving pets, and aside from the Dane, we spent about $200 max to bring them home. The Dane was more because he had medical bills and relocation fees of about $200-250.

It's not always a walk in the park, as the first cat we adopted was batshit insane. Thank god he was de-clawed or my daughter would've needed plastic surgery. That said, we did find out there's actually a feline nuthouse somewhere in Missouri.

    ^This

Other people may feel differently but I prefer to give a home to a dog or a cat who wouldn't have had it otherwise for next to nothing instead of paying out the ass.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. This is guilt-trip bullshit on the level of 'why would you buy a fancy car, you could buy a second-hand shitbox and donate the difference to charity instead'. If someone wants a specific purebred pet, shut the fuck up and let them get a purebred dog without trying to guilt them into playing Russian roulette in the hopes of getting a pet that was abandoned for some reason apart from 'it's batshit insane'.

It's safe to assume everyone's heard about animal shelters by the time they reach adulthood, so if they've decided to pay extra for a purebred pet, it means they really want a purebred pet. Quit with the guilt horsecrap.

Rah Rah Rah must justify my decision with overly aggressive illogical generalizations Rah Rah Rah

Most animals in shelters are there for one of three reasons.

They were effing abandoned/lost. You have no idea about the statistics of animals simply left to fend for themselves because their 'owners' can't be arsed to take responsibility for a life besides their own or their Brat's. Or by people who had no place owning a pet any more complicated than a goldfish in the first place.

They were abused and rescued by the ASPCA/Animal Cops.

They were left there because the family couldn't keep them for some reason. Be it money, moving somewhere that doesn't allow pets, a sudden allergy developing..

'Batshit insane' pets and animals don't stay at shelters for very long. If it's quite obvious the animal isn't safe to be around people they put them down most often. On the occasion that an animal can or could possibly be rehabilitated the most common practice is to hand them over to the experienced care of one of many volunteers.

I'm not arguing against people who want purebreds. There is a kind of purebred I want, but the idea that getting an animal from a shelter is akin to pointing a 'mostly' empty gun at your head is ridiculous.

Edit: On topic, rant distracted me.

Since you apparently aren't reading the thread except for the parts that puts knots in your panties, the post I was replying to explicitly refers to a batshit insane pet adopted from a shelter. Feel free to rant at Portus that his life experiences are impossible because all shelters have animal psychiatrists with perfect success rates on staff despite their chronic underfunding.

Hey, at least for the Tamaskan dogs, you'd be throwing your money at what seems like a responsible set of breeding criteria: smart, well behaved, healthy dogs, instead of something freakish.

That's exactly the breed I was speaking about. I'mma get me one of those. Oh yeah.

I'd love a Dalmatian, too. But the poor things are so inbred and overbred that you're just asking for a host of problems, including blindness, hip displasia, cancer and mental retardation.
