I like the idea. Dumbledore and his regiment of muggleborn wizards are not greeted as heroes, and they are disenfranchised. Dumbledore, considered a great war hero and distinguished Major by the muggle government, can barely find work in the magical world, until Professor Dippit finally has a change of heart and gives Dumbledore a job teaching transfiguration. This is also when all the Dumbledore hate truly began amongst the pure-blood-elite.

Most of the magical regiment retire into essentially muggle lives supplemented by secret use of their magic away from muggle eyes. A few of them, however, notice something entirely different in post-war Germany . . .

By 1918, Grindelwald was promoted to Generaloberst, so he had an entire army of soldiers under his command (only the few Generalfeldmarschall (Field Marshals/5-star Generals) above him commanded more troops). He made sure to keep virtually the entire unit (several thousand men) were all wizards. On top of that, Grindelwald had managed to persuade the German magical government to allow him to recruit wizards into the muggle army and use magic secretly to win, so long as they maintained the statute (he was forced to have an entire platoon of obliviators ready to ensure nothing too weird was remembered). The German magical government gave proper credit to Grindelwald for ensuring that the war ended in an armistice, rather than a defeat, so he and his soldiers were honored amongst the German magical population.

Many of Britain's disaffected and downtrodden magical veterans thus defected to Germany and joined Grindelwald, where they were Grindelwald gave them a place to belong and a livelihood.

Grindelwald retires from the German military greatly beloved by both the magical and muggle governments there. He pursues politics in Germany's magical government and uses his clout to rise quickly.

The Weimar Republik falls and the Nazis take over. Grindelwald takes advantage of this and begins building Wizarding Germany's army - it's first ever (During the Great war, it was a secretly magical, battalion of the otherwise Muggle German Army). All the old faces can't join fast enough and already know their place, as if the last 20 years didn't happen. He continues to recruit and promote his old officers until now he has at least four Magical Army Groups.

WWII begins and Grindelwald's magical army follows behind Hitler's Blitzkrieg, establishing Grindelwaldian domination over the Magical governments of Austria, Poland, and France.

In this story, Grindelwald and Hitler have nothing to do with one another. Although Grindelwald is taking advantage of the Nazi's actions, he's not aiding them. They are mutually exclusive. In fact, a very vocal section of the Jewish muggleborn population want Grindelwald to simply take over All of Germany and do away with the Nazis for obvious reasons, but Grindelwald is disinterested in this - he just wants to expand his control over Wizarding Europe.

Meanwhile, back in Britain, the purebloods are extactic to see muggles slaughtering each other again - except that apparently there is a Wizarding Army that is headed their way, too. When the Battle for Britain fails, Wizarding Britain, having had to deal with the magically equivalent invasion (and just barely repelled it), finally wake up. This awakening is also delayed by the fact that some members of Britains Wizarding Elite actually sympathize with Grindelwald (Most notibly several of the families Black and Malfoy - though they would likely be horrified if they actually went to Germany and noticed that purebloods might form magical footsoldiers under the command of a halfblood lieutenant, who inturn might have answered to a muggleborn Hauptmann. Grindelwald cared more about where you were in 1914-1918, than who your great-great-great-grandfather might be).

Begrudgingly, the ministry calls the one person they know can help build a magical British Army to save the magical world from Grindelwald's designs: former Major Albus Dumbledore. He's given the title of Magical Field Marshal and a draft is put into place to give him an army to train. What remains of his old regiment finally come out of the woodwork after a lot of deal-making and begging, and they are all made officers over the new British Magical Army.

Although these are disciplined armies of magical soldiers - they even wear uniforms - they don't fight alongside their muggle counterparts or even the same way. Portkeys, Apparition, hell, even Floo travel are used and the battles, though grand, are never fought before the eyes of muggles, or if they are, each platoon has its own healer, who doubles as an obliviator, who makes short work of pesky memories.

Due to his position as Field Marshal of the Magical Armies of Britain (and with the help of a time-turner), Dumbledore is quite capable of continuing to teach Transfiguration at Hogwarts.

As Grindelwald's forces begin dwindling or surrendering, or just abandoning him, like a cornered dog, he begins to bite himself, showing that his armies merely did work for him he was quite capable of handling himself. Dumbledore finally steps in and in a climactic battle, finally puts down the rabid dog with his own wand - his old, original battalion at his side, holding off, ironically enough, Grindelwald's own original batallion. That Christmas Eve in 1915 gets repeated, and old scores settled.

It is Dumbledore himself who chucks Grindelwald in his own prison, Nurmengard, and merely fails to contradict stories about him killing Grindelwald on the battlefield.

    @Rin
If a number of Dumbledore's war buddies defected to Grindelwald's side, it is cliche to have one as a spy for Dumbledore while maybe another one who truly converted to the Dark Wizard's cause and serve as second-in-command (or another high position). Until s/he too sees the error of her/his way, yada yadda.
Said spy's last name would be Prince, and he would leave a widow and a daughter behind, because shout back to canon is fun.

Riddle actually grows into a man with a legit occupation. His charisma and intelligence helps him win battles and gather admirers, while his psychopathic tendencies are satisfied on the battlefield. He fights alongside Dumbledore despite the older man's initial reservations (he's too young! etc.). Oh, and, when Riddle defeats a particularly powerful opponent he will goad by way of "Call me LORD VOLDEMORT!"
More political intrigue may come later, when Riddle is used by the likes of Malfoy and Black as the new war hero, while they push Dumbledore aside as he is now "obsolete".

The "British pureblood sympathizes with Grindelwald's cause" angle is...too predictable. Maybe, just maybe, the Malfoys and the Blacks are actually more aware of the situation and supports Dumbledore's plight (mostly by way of politics and finances, unless young Abraxan really wants the glory of fighting on the battlefield, and the like.)

The Potters, Vanguards of the Light or whatever, will serve as Aerial Scouts and be decimated (reflecting the lack of close blood relatives in canon) during the Battle of Britain, leaving behind only a late-middle-age and childless couple.

On the Muggle front, there should be random names like Evans or Dursley or Granger in the army, navy, whatever, just for the shit and giggles. As long as you don't overdo it, or make them too important, of course.
    ---
While I applaud your vision for a pretty epic story, I have to say that you should concentrate on part 1/first arc/whatever you call the WWI bits for now. I mean, if it is as epic as you plot it'll be at least 100k in words.
Only if you finish the first part, or at least a good half way through it, should you consider writing the second/third arc, because who knows what you may want to write by then, right?
Just make sure your first arc is self-contained (like, you know, The Matrix movie respective to Reloaded and Revolution.)

Going with a theme of WWII - mentioned earlier HP/Captain America fusion.

WWII may have ended for Muggles, but it's still on in the Wizard World. Grindelwald controlled both – Hitler and Stalin. He didn't care about them battling, because ultimately it didn't matter in his own war efforts on the wizard side of things. After daring, but unsuccessful attack on Gellert's main fortress in 1945, both sides of conflict are still fighting after more than 50 years, without any major victory.

Obviously, because of the war, children are prepared for a battlefield, or other ways to help war effort, from the day they're given their wand. Enter Harry Potter, son of a war hero - James Potter from famous Marauders Fireteam. Harry is talented wizard, but very weak physically, which, unless you're Dumbledore level wizard who command magic beyond imagination of most wizards, is very important factor on the battlefield. Because of this, unlike his friends from the school, Harry is not allowed to enter the Army and his assignment is to some low maintenance task.

Because of his many attempts to enter the Army anyway, he is noticed by Dumbledore seeking people for the Project Rebirth. They're trying to create the Elixir giving wizards a superior physically abilities without any drawbacks that happen with normal potions and more importantly – they want it to be permanent. Unfortunately, to this day all people brave enough to test it died in the process. It's because the Elixir contains a venom of thousand years old Basilisk, which is used to destroy body of the wizard. It also contains tears of Phoenix that should recreate it in the perfect way, eliminating any previous flaws, but for some reason it's not working as it should. Dumbledore suspects that they need a person of the purest heart for it and that Harry is such a person. Finally, after many preparations, they once more test the Elixir. This time it works perfectly and the Man Who Lived is born.

After transformation Harry enters the war, quickly gaining a reputation and winning the heart of the young Auror Nymphadora Tonks (because I really liked how it was done in the CA movie, this attraction starts before he's changed).

On the other side, Tom Riddle also know as Voldemort, is the right hand of Grindelwald (after he defected from Britain in 50-ties) and his main researcher. Using many dark rituals he finally managed to give himself a perfect, snakelike body (actually, if you think about it he really looks very similar to the Red Skull - they both don't have a nose ;) ).

The battle between two super-wizards is inevitable.

alternatively, Harry Potter was born to a different Potter family, graduated some time around 1942, was selected for the Elixir Experiment and after it worked, led the British and Allies to victory. Unfortunately, during the battle against Grindelwald in Siberia, he went MIA.
And then was found fifty years later, etc., etc.

These are all great as plots, but I don't think they will be coming out as fics. So, currently enjoying the discussions. :D

In canon, I remember JKR saying that Hitler is lapdog of Grindelwald.

How about Grindelwald being pro-muggle born?

This could be a very good segway into a WWII conflict. Yes canon says Grindelwald wanted Magical over Muggle domination. But it never states that Grindelwald was gung ho on blood purity.

So how about a Grindelwald, who ostracized by German magical society after WWI (for fighting with the muggles) decides to join politics. He is hated by all the old school purebloods in charge, yet Grindelwald has a bit of support from the muggleborn/half blood population of Germany. So he's elected to a German Wizengamot. You can make a case how most seats are hereditary and Grindelwald even elected, has little power.

He spends perhaps a decade in politics but isn't able to do much. Now only does have little power but he's a shitty politician because hey, some people just aren't good at politics. At this time, the muggleborns in Germany outnumber purebloods, but are too weak to do much. You can write about how they get second class educations, how the German Magical security forces are all pureblood so that the government can control the masses.

Now during this time the Nazis come to power. In 1933 if I remember correctly. Elements of the Nazi party were historically interested in the occult so it isn't much of a stretch to say that they had some fanatical Nazi muggleborn wizards in their ranks, some of whom by coincidence were from Grindelwald's old batalion. Grindelwald seeing no way to gain power after years in an elected minor office reveals the magical world to the upper echelons of the German government. Together they concoct a plan. With wizards from the Nazi party and some of Grindelwald's own supporters, he overthrows the German magical government while its heads are in England on a diplomatic call.

To prevent the entrenched purebloods from taking back power, Grindelwald on the night of the coup goes silently house to house with his pro Nazi wizards and kills off purebloods along with anyone else they think is a threat. When Germany wakes up, it does so under a new magical government. Now you could have another minor plotline about how some German officials who were in other countries at the time try to remove Grindelwald with the help of foreign auror forces but get soundly defeated.

Then WWII starts and magical governments start falling one by one to Germany (some to Grindelwald's army and other to pro Grindelwald muggleborn coups.) Grindelwald is greeted by all the muggleborns and sentinent magical creatures of Europe as a liberator while the purebloods react with horror, fight back, and retreat.

But wait, Grindelwald isn't a Hermione in this. He's a Dark Lord. German wizards commit massacres, kill pureblood families, go into countries with execution lists already prepared. You could have a subplot where the Goblins turn against Grindelwald and he retaliates with a systematic Goblin slaughter. Then of course England and Dumbledore get involved.

You can even see Voldemort's reactionary rise in the future as stemming from a well founded fear of muggleborns gaining power.

Grindelwald...from what we know of him, he was trying to make sure that wizards/witches in-general ruled over muggles - not 'purebloods' over the 'filth'.

To him, I expect a wizard/witch was just a wizard/witch, regardless of their blood status. He isn't like Voldemort, or his deluded pureblood henchmen.

But because of that, I could possibly see him slaughtering the bloodheads as they would be opposing his ideals. It would need to be written carefully though, so that whilst his murders are for the Greater Good (the greater good). Heck, have him starting a bit earlier, and cradle-snatching the heirs to Germanic Houses, and raising them as EveryWizardEqualicists.

Or maybe targeted killings. I read some really crap indy!harry a while back, that had one interesting feature. Due to the nature of pure-blood society, you could mostly predict who would get what on the death of any one person, and so Harry used his uber!goblin-trained!ninja-skillz (I feel unclean just for typing that) to wipe out the purebloods, becoming (forgive the lack of capitalization, I can't be bothered) lord potter black slytherin ravenclaw hufflepuff malfoy gryffindor peverall lestrange weasley dumbledore bones abbot lovegood bell dolohov krum etc etc...

Whilst it was executed terribly, it was a slightly interesting idea - sort of like one of those games were you have to remove the sticks in a certain order or you lose, but with more killing curses.

So this a challenge to anyone whose interested. So here it goes. The British Government has tried everything to stop Voldemort, even sending their best and most seasoned soldiers after him but one after another their have all failed and Voldemort is holding their society hostage. That is until one of the unspeakables reports that a prophecy has been made between Vodemort and Harry Potter, though they don't know whats it is about they decide to take a gamble.

So either of two things can happen.First they could Kidnap young Harry(of course after searching for him) Or second take him after Voldemorts attack on the potters.
Either way the take Harry and kind of put him in a protective custody. When he is a bit Older they have him take up the prophecy globe and it confirms what they hoped that he is the one who can defeat Voldemort.

Harry is trained by the magical equivalent of black ops to be the best soldier hence giving the British society a chance.

Plus they also recruit other "child" soldiers effectively brainwashing them into believing that they sole existence is only the extermination of ALL known death eaters and Harry will be one of this "child" soldiers. The perfect soldiers with nothing to lose and officially dont exist.(they could use muggleborn)

So thoughts? anyone thinks that the idea is good enough and try their hand at this?

I never really thought along those lines, to be honest. When I said that some of Dumbledore's former subordinates defected, it was during peace time, where they were treated like pariahs in England; and, despite having fought a war against Germany, were warmly welcomed with open arms by Generaloberst Grindelwald's army. These were essentially soldiers who didn't know what to do with themselves, outside of war, so they went back into the army, just someone else's army.

Riddle might be an abnormally intelligent and capable wizard for his age, he still did do all seven years at Hogwarts. Born New Years's Eve in 1926, Tom would have begun Hogwarts on September 1, 1938, and therefore, would have left sometime in May (or June) of 1945 - essentially, he would have missed WWII altogether.

My ideas are meant to supplement canon, not, ultimately contradict it.

Well, yes, it is predictable. Mainly because that's what happened. Canon openly states that the Blacks supported Grindelwald. In what capacity and to what extent, we don't know, but I figure that they could have gone a long way in the government towards ensuring that Magical Britain basically didn't oppose Grindelwald until it was virtually too late.

This is just a plot-bunny that I leave open to writers more capable than I should they decide they like it. Of course, I would not be adverse to being an adviser to any author that took up the project. I can be of particular help on the WWI bits.

Oh, I didn't realize you want to do a canon-compliant story; I thought it's gonna be AU. Thus, the Riddle as soldier/general, politics!politics!everywhere!, etc. suggestions.

    Shutting up now :D

Taking this from the Pet Peeves thread:
So... the trio is ambushed by Voldemort before they've found all the horcruxes, let's say near the cliffs of Dover. Ron and Hermione sacrifice their lives in an attempt to give Harry a chance to escape, but it only leads to Harry standing at the edge of the cliff. He turns back and realizes that he's going to die, so he just accepts it. Voldemort tosses the Killing curse and Harry is flung into the English Channel.

No chance that he lived, right?

Years later, Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy rule the wizarding government through Lucius' dual roles as Minister and Queen's Exchequer of Magic. His time is often taken up maneuvering for the sake of Voldemort's ambitions.

Along comes a swarthy, dark-haired wild man named Strannik, whose talent for Divination crossed with Dark Arts excites the otherwise jaded Narcissa. Together they begin to plot against Lucius, mostly as an entertaining way to poke fun at the starchy Death Eater.

Their intrigues draw Narcissa into a seduction that robs her of free will, but in so subtle a way as to be all but undetectable, even to the Dark Lord. Soon, other women of means fall under the hypnotic tales and intrigues of her close personal friend and confidant, Grigori.

Finally losing patience with his wife's derision and deceits, Lucius confronts her and her wild man paramour. The resulting spanking he received draws the attention of the Dark Lord.

It is then that the wild man reveals his familiar past, his powerful presence and an unusual collection of trinkets that Mr. Mort values more than life itself.

"I am not Grigori Strannik. My name is Harry James Potter. The man you couldn't kill."

    Smackdown ensues.

I see similarities in Narcissa ploy to this fic based on The Count of Monte Cristo, by the guy who has his photo with Anna Paquin as an avatar (I couldn't remember what nickname kmfrank has ;) ).

Also, knight504, every time I see your avatar, for some reason I'm reminded of still not yet updated Retsu's Folly. You should feel bad, because of that. ;)
