I really wouldn't. The first idea to come to me was the beginning and I can see what you mean. As long as he's not wherever the explosion is, it's all good, and it's a fair point.

I'd plan for this to be set over 7 years, with small time jumps of a couple months at a time. One novel. And I kinda have a resolution planned too, which would involve him getting to speak to some of the people he's lost. In the style JKR does in GOF, or DH. A couple of moments that help him, show he's still a person but aren't really that long.

Tbh, after I verbalised it here I couldn't help but go and plot my idea out over a couple of pages and it'd definitely be an action thing.

EDIT: for perspective, I'm not a hundred per cent sure yet. I'd like to try first because in some ways I think it'd suit me more. But setting up the various sub plots so that all the set-pieces happen at the same time and finding ways to relate a global event from one person's POV. . . It'd be difficult for me. I'd hate to make it shit.

Well, if you want, write something, see how it goes, and I'll be happy to read it over, and beta it for you. The more I think on it, the more I like it, so I quite want to see it done well, and would be happy to help towards that end.

The plot has definitely potential. Don't hesitate to write something and throw it into the WbA. There will be plenty of readers ready to catch your mistakes and suggests amelioration.

I posted this idea a while ago but did not recieve any response so I figure I should try again and maybe explain more in depth.

Harry has always been plagued by nightmares for as long as he could remember, though the dreams have always been different there was only one constant, the glass door. Harry had learned along time ago never to so much as approach it.

During Harry's occlumency lessons, Snape shatters the door open curious to see what lies beyond it. What he sees completely and utterly shatters his mind.

I was going to take a darker path to how Harry survived Voldemort's attack, Lilly and James perform a ritual where they sacrifice the lives of others to bestow protection on Harry(think of what Homunculus and Ed's father from fullmetal alchemist did) and therefore Harry is more or less living with the souls of the sacrifices inside him. As a result Magic itself is opposed to the existence of Harry existing and thats why he is only safe at the Dursleys and Hogwarts.

    Thoughts so far?

Sounds interesting, but where would you go from there? I see a lot of potential, especially if it's done well.

If Magic itself is out to do him in, wouldn't the first spell he tried-or rather any sort of accidental magic would probably be more accurate- at lets say school backfire dramatically? Splinch him in half instead of successfully hiding him atop the roof during that one chase, or something of that sort.

Really, any point outside of Hogwarts and he can't cast a spell for fear that it might go wrong and melt his flesh off instead, perhaps forcing him into obsessing over exact pronunciation and perfect wand movements, and no wandless under any circumstances?

It could work depending on the setting, I suppose.

Zenzao is correct, you need to have a realistic reason as to why magic won't harm Harry the first chance it gets.

But if you find a plausible explanation to that, this story can become an interesting one.

Also, making Harry a magical anomaly, when he is already up against Voldemort is too....hard.

Although you could twist the often seen story of Harry being the embodiment of magic.

The only reason Voldemort survived that night would have been due to Magic's hatred of Harry, and knowing that something like Voldemort would be needed to kill Harry. Make up some sort of twaddle about how horcruxes don't work, or all the books were written by high-powered 'light' wizards (like Dumbledore), and actually weaken the wizard who makes one. The instructions and references are made so only the most powerful of the darker wizards can find out, and therefore only the wizards who would could potentially destroy society, which means the flaws are less likely to be reported.

If they're so skilled, wouldn't they also twig to the fact that there's something wrong with the ritual?

Tomato's got a point, but, I reckon that if you give a plausible reason as to why Horcruxes don't work - perhaps that Voldemort's are the very first to have even been created, and he made a massive mistake - then it would work quite well.

    Pirate!Harry

During GoF Harry panics after his name is called out of the Goblet of Fire, when Crouch says Harry must compete, Harry goes apeshit, proceeds to steal Durmstrang ship. Harry proceeds to become a pirate. War breaks out between the UK and whoever Durmstrang belongs to, Bulgaria?

Wizards could inhabit the north pole, possibly the southern pole, magnets? More like magic. Harry goes on to plunder other wizarding ships and muggle vessles alike.

You know you want to do it. Pirate!Harry. Shit could be bawse.

North and south magnetic poles are actually large concentrations of wizarding society, magic interfere's with muggle technology, muggles base their means of direction off a compass not actually working like it should.

Seriously, Pirate!Harry, could work massively AU or break off from the normal canon world at some point. There's so many possibilities, even Dumbledore centric could work.

I had a similar idea awhile back, if a bit different. The north and south poles are great magical wellsprings but all that power crashes down at the equator, where the two forces meet. This leads to an area called Merlin's Belt, an area of expanded space you can only enter with magic. Due to the nature of the crash, water is far more affected than land, so the bits of South America and Africa on the equator have a very thin belt while the ocean has a very think one, filled with islands, fearsome magical creatures and wizards.

Within Merlin's Belt the magic is so high that even simple technology fails. Within Merlin's Belt, (magical) sail ships are still the norm, magic is practiced openly (the few muggles inside can't get out to tell anyone) and it's all piratey - Cutting Charm enchanted cutlasses, blasting curse cannons, great sea serpents able to eat a ship whole. Civilisation would be based around the major islands, with the seas in-between ruled by magical creatures, pirates (some dead) and anything else that fulfils the dual criteria of being cool and over-the-top.

That would very much depend on the style of the piece. I was thinking Monkey Island myself, a bit tongue and cheek.

So I just read the updates to Kincaid-Care and I was thinking, what about a story where Harry's raised by a Kincaid-inspired bodyguard or even Kincaid himself?

I could see the bodyguard having Harry live at the Dursleys for the protection offered by the blood protections but the addition of someone dedicated to Harry's wellbeing would certainly change the family dynamic. Not to mention the changes that it would herald for his school years.

    I have this strange inspiration...

Suppose mid-sixth year, Voldemort realizes that his evil reputation will only make him a despot, and one that will constantly be targeted by magical do-gooders. He smartens up.

So one day on the Wizarding wireless, Minister Scrimgeour announces to a hastily-assembled media group that Voldemort has been killed. The Dark Lord's head has been brought to the Ministry by the man who did the deed, an attractive, dark-haired and powerful wizard named Gabriel Gaunt.

Mr. Gaunt spins an epic tale- he was raised in Europe and trained in magic by his foster family until he left to explore the world and his background. He discovered that he was descended from a British family of Gaunts, thought to have died out years ago. Hearing of the strife growing in the land of his ancestors, he came to Britain, discovered the inhuman creature he assumed was Voldemort being assisted in some arcane ritual by a half-dozen low-lifes in an abandoned church. He struck with surprise. He won.

('Yay! But next time, you should contact the Aurors.')

Scrimgeour announces that the man's account will be verified, but if it proves accurate, Gaunt will receive the Order of Merlin, first class.

Gabriel has much to say about his view of the wizarding world, and makes indications that he'll be seeking a position in the Wizengamot...

    What does Dumbledore do?

Reveals him for the fraud he is. Voldemort is unmasked, aurors attempt to arrest him, get slaughtered, war starts all over again.

    End of story.

Get Dumbledore out of the picture before he can give Harry/Snape key information, though, and that might be a different story.
