Maybe Bellatrix does that and that is why Volde is always in bad mood.

Purebloods watching tv or movies. Just seems wrong.

    ---------- Post automerged 05-23-2012 at 09:24 PM ---------- Previous post was 05-22-2012 at 09:48 PM ----------

Harry and co. writing smart ass answers to Lockhart's questionnaire. It's lame and overdone. Also having Lockhart's books having inconsistencies when it comes too dates, people would have notice that before and called him out on it. Especially if he was up for something like the order of merlin award.

I suppose when put frankly, it sounds pretty bad. But it's not something I would completely rule out.

Canon-wise, most of the glimpses of Pureblood views on Muggle technologies, habits, etc... that we get are mainly from the Weasley family. For example, Arthur knowing nothing about electricity, or Ron not knowing that regular pictures don't move. But going through the books, the Weasley's seem to be on the fringe of Wizarding society. Their house is only standing because of magic, and it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Even the Black family, who came across as very anti-Muggle ala Sirius's mother's painting, lived in a Muggle neighbourhood.

So, it might not be too far off that Purebloods have some knowledge regarding Muggles, perhaps even using Muggle technologies. Malfoy seemed to know what a helicopter was (narrowly escaping one on his broom, or so he claimed in PS). Obviously, this might have been an oversight on JK Rowling's part, because it's doubtful she was thinking about the inconsistencies in the world she created when she had an actual story to worry about.

Looking at all this information, I don't think it's too far off to have fanon Purebloods engaging in 'Muggle' activities like watching TV. Of course, if you're reading fics about Harry and friends going on dates to the movies etc... you're probably already reading the wrong sort of fics to begin with.

The best way to put it would be... the level of unbelievability a story can get away with depends on how well the writer can sell it. nonjon's 'A Black Comedy' had Purebloods with TVs, but it doesn't come off as weird in context to the story. He sells it extremely well, so it becomes acceptable to read despite any preconceptions or notions a reader might have as to what a certain character might or might not do.

I cannot stand dialogue like this:

"No! We can't kill Harry" Hermione said, ignorant of her missing punctuation.

Put a goddamn comma or some shit before you close the quotation marks. That's basic fucking shit, and it totally makes me break away from my reading immersion.

Or I might just be obsessed with grammar and such. Either or.

Weapon! Harry without a tie to the culture his weapon originates from.

I have no problems with Harry wielding a weapon as long as it comes from a culture he has a link to and is relevant to the plot. These ties already exist for the Celts, French, Romans, and of course the British, but can be formed in an AU by harry spending a few years in say Russia or if his the person training him is from say Brazil.

IRL: My computer turning off MID FUCKING SENTENCE. (Sorry it happened about a dozen times while reading this page alone.)

I have never seen a story where Harry has a weapon other than his wand or Gryffindor's sword that wasn't complete shit, regardless of the culture the weapon came from or Harry's connection to it.

Wait, what? There are fics that do this?
Hmm, tough to pick a specific peeve that bothers me. Probably fics, especially crossovers, where Harry gets some training by this master dude who specialises in this form of magic/martial arts/whatever and proceeds to wtfpwn every professor, Dumbledore and Voldemort in his first year at Hogwarts.

My reason for the Weapon!Harry pet peeve is that i have seen some stories that Had potential right up until Harry picked up a katana or other such foreign weapon. Can't remember any off the top of my head but they are out there even if they are rare.

Stories where Harry is supposed to be a genius and yet it is more that everyone is so stupid that he despite being below average is better than them. Hell it is so bad that among the stories in ff.net one that does it great(in comparison) is one that the author is simply preparing for a harem story with lots of lemons. Yep, a smut story is among the 'best' in this group, sad isn't it?

Another pet peeve of mine is people confusing inteligence, maturity and experience.

There are no 'best' stories like this. One piece of shit just smells a bit less than the others.
