I'm the opposite, in that, I find san-serif fonts harder to read and a much bigger tax on my eyes over the long-run than seriffed fonts.

I think I'm going to put this in my sig, if you don't mind.

A new peeve of mine is where Luna is shown to have some kind of odd power that accounts for her weirdness. I know she's not a dumbshit, but it's pretty much established that she has blind faith in the conspiracy theories of her unstable schizo father. Whether a story has her coming to term with that post-DH or not doesn't matter, but any variation of "Luna was right all along" or "Luna is a seer/dimension traveler/mythical creature's chosen emissary to wizardkind" almost always makes me cringe.

I got three chapters into a fic where she was nearly all three. I believe she was the 'Veela Fairy Queen' and the 'Next Veela Seer' or something like that. Basically she had the power to see through glamors, see through polyjuice potion, see a person's past AND future, communicate with magical creatures, and heal almost any wound.

Although that was HARDLY the worst thing going with that particular story.

When people can't spell 'clothes', instead, calling them 'cloths'.

I just have this image in my head of people wearing dish cloths, or dusting cloths walking around.

...If it's Fleur Delacour, I'd rather see cloths.

For your birthday/christmas, I feel like buying you a poster of Fleur Delacour would be the safest option.

Veela are supposed to be supernaturally attractive, that's the whole idea. So no picture will do it justice. All the airbrushing in the world can't duplicate the magical effect of Veela allure (or whatever it is).

Authors who lack the ability to read properly and concluded DH with the impression that Dumbledore endorses the idea of "the Greater Good", and thereafter include it in their absurd manipulative Dumbledore fanfic as Dumbledore's justification for all manner of ridiculous things.

No, idiots. The philosophy of the greater good is the one that Dumbledore explicitly rejects. If he truly believed in it, he would have executed Harry the moment he became aware that Harry was a horcrux, or else trained Harry from an early age to be a mindless soldier - as we see in so many fanfics, which somehow think that training child soldiers is less abusive than the Dursleys.

In fact, the fanon obsession with the child soldier, and many authors' apparent endorsement of it, is somewhat disturbing. Do these authors honestly believe that training a child from age 1 to be a killing machine was the most morally virtuous action possible?

If you know that you're living in a book series which ends with the main character still a child, then perhaps. Clearly the problem is that Dumbledore wasn't genre savvy enough to realize that Harry being an orphan meant that Voldemort would return while that was still relevant rather than after Harry became an adult.

    God, this. So much.

Every fucking fic (and by this, I really mean the generic shit on FFn) that has a 'manipulative' (and by this I mean dumbass!Dumbledore, who is after "teh Potta moneyz" or "teh Potter Wizenmagot seatz!" or some other poorly thought of fanon excuse) Dumbledore uses the 'Greater Good' shit.

Really makes me want to punch a few people.

Honestly, I made the mistake of actually believing the fanon crap until I re-read DH. It did not help that the first time I read DH I was a substitute teacher for hormonal middle school rednecks and was reading during my lunch breaks.

I am frequently disturbed by how often fic writers think that they have improved Harry by turning him into a cold, psychotic killing machine by age 8.

The only story I found tolerable was one where Harry has a personality disorder because of under-developed socialization skills.

    Someone having an 'evil grin'.

When a writer says '(Insert name) had an evil grin on their face', I just imagine this creature that's turned bad, with some sort of plan for world dominance, starting with a persons face.

I think those are just stupid exaggerations of real problems with canon. JKR used tropes in a parody universe. So Harry has a bunch of relatives, but he is an orphan alone in the world. Harry lives in a nanny state surrounded by noisy neighbors and the adoration of fans, but his home life is kinda abusive. Harry is rich and famous, but he doesn't use any of it to get ahead. Harry is very important for Wizarding Britain and Dumbledore's plans, but he remains an ignorant pawn into adulthood. Dumbledore is very powerful, respected or feared by all, but he fails at protecting any of the good guys from ridiculous things. This and much more is needed for the sake of the story. If Voldemort's plans weren't nuts, he would have won years ago and all the good guys would have been either dead or enslaved. If Dumbledore didn't fuck up, Voldemort would have been dead and the DEs executed years ago. If the adults weren't completely useless, the children would not have been needed to save the world. If Harry didn't have needless bad things happen to him, he wouldn't have been a tragic hero. Is the execution perfect? No. Are we still here talking about it? Yes. Damn.

I hate stories where an eleven year old Harry is acting like an adult.

'Methods of Rationality' being the prime example. God fucking dammit I hate that fic.

I hate it when people go meta.

    And self-referential.

    And recursive.

When people confuse 'moments' and 'minutes'.

For example: "Harry stared at Fleur's exposed breasts for several minutes, his eyes wide."

I don't even think that's a mistake most of the time, just the author going for dramatic effect or what have you. But it always makes me cringe. Seriously, unless the character is in a moment of introspection alone or something of that nature, I always do a full stop and just imagine so and so doing this or that for ten minutes.

Not sure I see the problem here... let me stare at it for a few minutes longer.

Magic should absolutely allow for porn at least as good as Quark's holosuite in ST DS9, and I don't believe that the teenage protagonist is not aware of it. The author simply didn't understand how big of an industry porn is, or how it's the first to adopt novel technology.
