The key thing to understand is that most slash stories do not actually feature any homosexual characters, but rather are about heterosexual relationships where the woman supposedly has a penis. Mpreg is simply the inevitable result of pretending that a character is male without bothering to reflect that in the story.

I read Harry Potter and the boy who lived a while ago and loved it, until Harry went to put his name in the goblet of fire and fucked it up. I haven't read any further and honestly don't plan to.

I just went on fanfiction.net and found this on the first page so i find myself inclined to agree with you.

and this is from the first chapter and within 2 minutes of Draco seeing Harry.

That is in the first chapter and Harry didn't say a word to Draco so clearly Draco just somehow 'knew' that Harry was abused and couldnt have just got in a fight and lost. :facepalm

Stories where Harry feels the need to tell people he has just met important facts about his life that he wants to keep secret from other people e.g he was abused, he was raped, he isn't really a potter or he isn't human ect.

When the author has Harry speak like he is giving a speech to boost moral even though he is only talking to one person. I was reading a story that had harry speaking to I think it was Hermione and he said, 'No longer will I let people control my life, No longer will I hold back in class, No longer will I let the Dursley's treat me like their slave...' yeah that really gets to me, I have never in my life heard someone speak like that except when it has been scripted in a play or a similar situation.

Large roles played from other fics.

This isn't really a problem in HP fanfiction - the most you're likely to see is a minor shout-out or cameo, as near all the characters are canon.

However, I was reading Griffin the Griffin, an MLP piece, which is written in a non-canon universe - Rust's 'Echo the Diamond Dog'. But then it goes further. Rather than just using a similar concept, and having another author's OC walk past on the street, he gets a small role for a few chapters.
And their interactions aren't the same as in the other piece. Which is sort of understandable, as they are two seperate authors. But there is very little in common between the relevant scenes.

Then, in later chapters of GtG, we have another four or five author's OCs all show up, and have HUGE roles. And, of course, because they were mostly written as SI ocS (because a normal OC wasn't enough), they are completely overpowered and ruin the actual story. The characters had such different attitudes, they don't belong together at all.

And I bet if I ever read the fics that these new OCs were from, the scene would happen completely differently there, too.

    TL;DR - borrowing OCs. It doesn't work.

When stories take the "Hogwarts feels alive thanks to all the ambient magic" statements and turn it into "Hogwarts is literally alive," and you can ask "her" to do things like let you apparate or kick someone from the school, or remove someone from their house. Shit like that.

"Lady Hogwarts" might just be the worst fanfiction thing ever.

Another irritation is when the author turns magic into some almost-entity that has emotion or desires.

Well I have to argue with you on that one.I always thought magic was semi-sentient. Not with dog-like sentience but lesser. It's not a being but an entity of sort. Dunno it's hard to write it down.

About Hogwarts, dude it's a magical castle. I agree the Lady Hogwarts bit is a little over the top, but some kind of sentience could be happening. After all it's magic.

    Huh. Weasley car. Hogwarts castle.

    Stalker!Hogwarts.

There it was again - the strange feeling of being observed, of being judged and found wanting. Malfoy shivered and drew his cloak tighter, picking up the pace.

He never saw the gleaming suit of armour's swinging halbard.

I don't think the idea of Hogwarts being sentient is inherently terrible, but in practice it's nearly always just an awful way for Harry to be indirectly ~totally awesome~ and push around or get rid of whichever set of adults the story is demonizing.

Actually, the only exception that comes to mind is that story where the (stone) personifications of Gringotts and Hogwarts decide that Harry is going to father their children and rape him.

Whenever I come across a fic that involves Harry porking Lady Hogwarts, I can't stop myself from making bad STD jokes.

Adding an unnecessary 'S' to the end of a foreign word, trying to make it adhere to the rules of English. While I definitely see it more often in anime/manga fics, Harry is by no means safe from this rage inducing disease that plagues the fandomwealth.

'Shinobis': Its Shinobi. Unless you're referencing a single Shinobi, or implying ownership of something, NEVER add the 's. Or s' for that matter. Its Japanese, the word doesn't mean a damn thing in English.
Or written in proper dialect- "Eet dun meen a dam thang in 'murica. Dun try tah maek eet."
    Effing wapanese idiots.

Ninja, I can forgive on occasion; in a title for example. "And then Suddenly, Ninjas'!"
-Well. I feel like a complete tool, thanks for the correction.-
    ___

Just putting it out there, but the whole "15 items or less" thing at supermarkets bothers me too.

TL; DR I'm a grammar Nazi when it comes to fiction :fire

It seems appropriate, then, for yours to be corrected: the use of an apostrophe with an s indicates possession (or contraction), not the plural. So it should be "ninjas".

That's the thing about most overused ideas. I mean, the idea of Lady Hogwarts could have been a good idea in a story, but the mass of people suddenly wanting to use it in a story fucked it up. It's like... manipulative!Dumbledore. It could be used as a good idea for a story, but there are too many poorly written stories that make these ideas become synonymous with crap.

I found the Harry Potter and the Four Founders used the idea of Lady Hogwarts pretty well, except then they turned it into this weird Charlie's Angels ripoff by having the girls call themselves Potter's Angels.

Oh! I've got a pet peeve that I haven't seen written here yet.

When Harry (usually an Indy!Harry) leaves home, he'll find some old wise master to teach him some sort of lost art (Usually an old asian man who is suddenly willing to pass on his teachings). Then he goes back to school (or the Wizengamot) and acts like a badass because he knows some old asian teachings that suddenly make him the new merlin.

It just pisses me off how weird this makes the story. Harry usually ends up carrying around a Katana and acts like its weird for everyone else not to carry one, or he suddenly follows asian customs, like bowing or something, and the author makes other characters look dumb for not doing it themselves.

Usually, he'll be an old "Japanese" man (explicitly stated) with an obviously Chinese (and rarely, Korean) name (obvious to anyone who knows Japanese).

But it won't matter anyway, because from that point forward he will be referred to as "Sensei".

Another pet peeve of mine is seeing every character making oaths left and right, always ending them with "so mote it be".

Having a dark Azkaban Harry who has spent x number of months/years with the most violent or dangerous people in the prison being scared of a school girl glaring/hexing him or that there are rumors about him floating around a school.

I think this may have been mentioned before but I feel it deserves to be mentioned again. Harry being called pup/cub or prongslet (what ever the fuck a prongslet is) nearly every story has this in now and its stupid, Sirius is not a dog and unless Remus accepts he is a werewolf and Harry is bitten at a young age then Harry will never be called cub, even then there is no way a 15 year old would be called cub.

Sorry, this was done on my phone so I apologise for any mistakes. My internet is down at the moment.

Did you just read a story like this? Very rarely do I read a story that makes me rage so much that I have to make a post on the forum with my phone (that being said, this is typed on my phone).

P.s. I like the nicknames like "pup" and "prongslet". They are fun and childish, which fits Sirius very well.
