I don't give a shit if it's pwp or illusions of plot. If you just want to characters to fuck, fine. But don't you bloody dare say that Harry defeated the greatest dark lord ever at the age of 15 just so you can have him fuck Hermione in the room of requirement.

The biggest problem I have with it is that most of the time, any mention of Voldemort wasn't even needed.

Does it really matter if Harry defeats Voldemort at the age of 15 or 17? Either way it's not going to be about personal skill on one on one fight (or if it is, that's a lot bigger problem than a year or two more 'training').

If either side of the conflict was even remotely competent there's no way the fight would have dragged on until the end of Harry's 7th year.

17 was silly too, but at least JKR made sure it was clear that the only thing Harry contributed was courage in his willingness to die for the people he loved.

Having him best Voldemort as a teenager is fucking stupid.

You do realise that Harry defeated Voldemort when he was one year old? And yet it's him being seventeen that causes you problems?

I have trouble believing Voldemort was The Greatest Dark Lord Ever™, I mean just a few decades earlier you have Grindelwald which did everything he did but for the entire continent instead. It is also a very stupid claim, how do you measure something like that across millenia and a multitude of countries and cultures?

Plus I have no trouble imagining how stupid someone has to be to put his horcruxes where he did. Seriously was he arrogant enough that despite fearing Dumbledore he never even considered the possibility he might actually lose and need his Horcrux therein making Dumbledore think of the ways he could have done it?

Though it is not like he has to be much skilled to defeat everyone, remember that the average wizard can't even cast the most basic shielding charm correctly. The children that Harry taught during 5th year are among the best overall of the country probably within top 100.

Which I suppose would qualify as a pet peeve of mine, people giving ridiculous skills to both sides and yet have things happen the exact same way. Or having Dumbledore know how Voldemort survived before 2nd year, there is no way you can have that happen and Dumbledore not be really stupid.

It's hardly a 'pet peeve' when you state it so broadly as that, chemo. Of course Voldemort was stupid, and of course Dumbledore made mistakes - is this your first rodeo with YA fiction? Nowhere in any rational universe does it fall to the children to fight the wars and solve the problems, and yet you lament the deus ex machina, the nick-of-time coincidences, and rampant dumbing-down of the antagonists necessary to allow such a plot to function? At the same time wholly allowing the suspension of disbelief needed to allow any family with access to FUCKING MAGIC to be anything but fabulously wealthy, let alone in the borderline poverty of the Weasleys?!?

    Shut the fuck up.

When people call Voldemort the greatest Dark wizard of all time they're not referring to his achievements, but his skill with magic. I.e. he's the guy you'd least like to go up against in a fight, out of all history.

Lily Potter defeated him, if anything. Your argument is bad and you should feel bad.

It's one of those things guys... if you're only familiar with one Dark Lord, he's probably the worst one. Now if Dark Lord#2 came along and showed you he was better than Voldemort, sure, you'd go out on a limb. But at this point Grindelwald is a distant memory to someone like Harry, who was born fifty-ish years later. It's like us saying World War II was the worst war in history... but Brazil, or Argentina, or South Africa, or some other country uninvolved in that particular war would say something else was the worst.

Hence, while the continent was affected by Grindelwald and beasted, the vast majority of British wizards and witches would think Voldemort was worse, as he just raped their ass in the last twenty years, and if not for a complete fluke, would still be raping them.

Does that make sense? That obviously he's not the worst ever, but to Harry's people, he would be the worst?

Your argument is that having Harry defeat Voldemort while he's still in his teens is almost the stupidest thing imaginable. This would include about 90% of all HP fanfics, well, the ones that focus on Harry anyway, are stupid. While admittedly they are mostly stupid, that's not usually the reason.

My argument was no worse than yours, but at least mine was backed up by canon. Sort of.

Yeah, but it's not like canon makes sense half the time. either. :p

Averis: Dumbledore, who knew Grindelwald better than perhaps anyone else, said that Voldemort was the worst dark wizard of all time too.

Now that we are apparently ranting about canon, I have serious issues with how the school-kid Voldemort is portrayed in the books. If someone wrote him in fanfiction he would be the biggest Gary Stu ever.

First, he manages to explore more of the castle than the four marauders did, even though they basically did nothing else.

Second, while exploring the castle, he apparently manages to read more than Hermione, even though she basically does nothing else.

Third, while spending all of his time in library and searching all the dungeons of the castle, he manages to manipulate himself into being a head boy and the favorite of Slughorn even though he has no family connections, no money and is by all intents and purposes a mudblood. In Slytherin, where basically nothing else matters.

Oh, and he makes a breakthrough in the field of evil immortality while still in school, while simultaneously keeping all of his questionable activities hidden from Dumbledore and the other teachers...

Voldemort being the ultimate schoolboy breaks the symmetry of him and Harry being "equals", and the idea that Harry might turn into another dark lord if he simply made different choices. The super-kid Riddle would curb stomp Harry any day, in any competition. Except perhaps Quidditch.

A good point. Dumbledore is probably right in the sense that Voldemort was worse than Grindelwald because he had absolutely no scruples, and cared about power and nothing else. Grindelwald at least started out with the whole thing of wizards not having to hide (even if he was in it for the power too) and he never split his own soul the way Voldemort did.

Another reason to hate Harry/Ginny, right there. The idea really gets on my nerves, especially when authors go through extra trouble to describe how similar Ginny is to Lily. Um...what exactly are they suggesting? That Harry went after Ginny because she looks like his dead mum?

Harry is apparently a much more troubled young man than I first believed.

Does JKR know what kind of monstrosity she was unleashing upon the world? No, actually, forget I asked that. She was probably more than aware.

    Lily Potter = dead.
    Voldemort = wraith creature.
    That's not a defeat.

Harry lived by miscalculation on Voldemort's part. Not by defeating Voldemort. Voldemort beat himself by forgetting about the magic tied up in love. He confessed as much in the Graveyard scene in GoF.

Once again, Harry didn't kill Voldemort, Voldemort beat himself through his own miscalculations, due to arrogance. He miscalculated Snape's love for Lily, which ultimately led to Voldemort thinking he won the Elder Wand by killing Snape. Then after, he miscalculated thinking that he could win on skill alone after Harry explained what happened (arrogance). then after being set right by Harry on who the master of the wand was, he attempted to use it against it's own master (extreme arrogance).

Oh shut up. Do you know how stupid you sound? Despite what you may have heard, it is not 'cool' or 'edgy' to spew obnoxious hate on JKR, Ginny or any other part of Harry Potter. Don't like it. Cool, fine. And do you know what you can do about it? Write something you like better. Go down to Harry Potter Work by Author and write your perfect story. Don't want to do that. Still not a problem. People are always happy for properly thought out criticism of their work (or they should be). Help them make your perfect Harry Potter story. Post ideas, discus canon, criticise and point out what could be done better but this cheap shot, derp-hate is just sad.

Even more irrefutable than that, JKR, as narrator, made the explicit claim in a section of narrative summary at the beginning of CoS concerning Voldemort, "At the age of one year old, Harry had somehow survived a curse from the greatest Dark sorcerer of all times, Lord Voldemort, whose name most witches and wizards still feared to speak." (chapter 1)

Uh, yeah, exactly that. The scientific term is homogamy and is a recognized element of human mating. See this 2002 scientific study concerning the way humans find mates.

Also see this study, which argues that "under the influence of childhood experiences, sons internalize their mother's phenotype as a template for acquiring similar mates."

In other words, you're ripping JKR and fanfic authors for something that, according to scientific study, is accurate.

    Brilliant. :facepalm

No matter what it's still creepy as hell.

Not because Harry wants a mate that is similar to his mother, but because Ginny looks exactly like his mother. That's not a mating habit, that's fucking creepy.

While I agree with idea Brazil actually was involved somewhat(as minor as it was) in the war and I think I remember South Africa also being. Don't remember anything about Argentina though.

Also personally I would say most people in Brazil would answer ww2 as the worst war in history. And I would add that it would be so if you set the dates as 1937-1945 instead.

    @E. C. Scrubb
Oh, I think the complaint is different from what you are thinking. There is a difference between recognizing something as atractive because of that and making the conscious decision to pursue someone because they look like his/her mother.

Regardless aside from hair color(and even that is pretty different) Ginny and Lily as described have pretty much nothing in common so the whole thing is dumb anyway.
