I don't think I'd want to be in Iceland for an extended period of time either. It's pretty damn cold up there. Fuckin glaciers and shit.

Link Confirmed that the role West passed on was Mance Rayder. I don't know much about West, but from what I've heard he would made an amazing Mance imo.

Go watch Centurion, 300 and his more debauched turns in The Wire, then go rage at the heavens.

He would've been insanely awesome as Mance from what I've seen of him in the wire. Daaaaaaaaamn.

    Ciarán Hinds as Mance Rayder.

    :awesome

He was awesome in Rome. Nothing at all like how I imagined Mance, but still. He's a great actor.

I really like that guy--not what I pictured for Mance, but he's pretty keeckass anyways.

Daario Naharis and Grey Worm have been cast. Ed Skrein as Daario and Jacob Anderson as Grey Worm. Source. I know absolutely nothing about these two.

Hinds is actually really, really close to how I pictured Mance. I'm pleased.

I actually expected Mance to be older. But, I'm sure that I will enjoy Hinds's acting. At the moment though, I really want to see how they portray the unsullied.

I know how they won't portray them: as the copper-skinned Yes Massa types they are in the books. I wish they would, but considering some of the relief I've heard people express about the exclusion of Alayaya's whipping I doubt HBO wants the attention, especially with the Blond Dragon Jesus jokes that have been around for literally years. I think they'll look a bit like Varys, slightly rotund as they were described., with a similar complexion

Regardless, Ed Skrein better get a tan and a hair piece.

This is a little ridiculous, even I admit, but direwolves are described as being the size of horses. One of the myths about Robb Stark was that he rode a giant wolf into battle. Does anyone know if a direwolf would actually be able to support a rider? Assuming it could be trained to do such a thing, of course.

I've always been curious about how of all the large animals in the world, only horses and very similar species are ever ridden, even in isolated cultures. I know that even beyond domestication issues, even horsey shaped creatures like deer possess the wrong mix of muscular or skeletal structure to properly carry a rider, but direwolves are damn big. Heh.

Then again, I remember riding my Aunt's giant dog when I was tiny and being lectured endlessly about how it would have injured the dog if I'd kept doing it, even though I was tiny then, so it doesn't seem farfetched that even its monstrous cousin would get its spine a bit wonky if somebody plonked down on top of it for long.

Riding a giant wolf into battle is both awesome and ridiculous, but I can't imagine it'll happen in the series. We did get bear cavalry, after all. That's enough for anyone.

The pet thread suggests a few people around may have a more educated guess than I, though, so I put forth this question: could I, in theory, ride a direwolf like the most magnificent wanker ever to live?

If it was big and strong enough, yes. But you'd have to ride it across the shoulders, not the back like a horse. A dog's backbone just can't handle it.

Holy shiiiiit. That looks unbelievably awesome.

    Florence helps.

    Edit: Not Florence. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoi0Z9zKE1M

Dany bits look :awesome. Just those short shots are reminding me that the Daenerys parts this season are my favourite it the whole series.
