Sam: probably. He's a perfectly fine member of the Watch, it's just that they've primarily showed him in combat situations, which isn't what he's good at (remember, Steward, not Ranger). He's a bookworm who loves to research ancient history (think fat, male Hermione with questionable hygiene and no spine), and his time will come.

Edmure: probably not. He's a total fuckup in the books as well - the scene where Robb rips him a new one about the battle at the mill is pretty much taken directly from the novels.

Really? I just assumed that he was slamming me for being -or trying to be-so edgy. Well, you give him more credit than I would.

Edmure really isn't a fuck-up in the books though.Well, he's not as clear a fuck up. Robb refused to share his battleplan and Edmure acted reasonably. In fact, one might argue that Robb was pressuring Edmure to prep him for his marriage to Frey #9970. But in the series not only is the fundamental unfairness of the situation ignored, his moment of grief (failing to light the pyre-boat...thing) is just the beginning of his humiliation. He, a high-lord, is smacked by an uncle in public and then spanked again for not just staying in RR but producing some weaksauce defenses.

He just comes off as far more oafish and ineffectual than in the books.

As for Sam: at best I see him Googling passages on dragonglass and The Others, like book!Sam. Past that...even in the books I don't remember anything so brave.

Honestly I wonder if John shouldn't have let Alliser beat some sense into him. He'd either bend or break, but either way the Watch would know his true character.

I'm surprised the Red Wedding didn't get a full episode of focus tonight. Wasn't anywhere near as ghastly as I was expecting it to be.

Still pretty brutal though what with the unborn baby stabbing / unceremonious throat slitting.

Loved this episode. As gruesome as I imagined it would be when I read the book. Twitter and Facebook have been blowing up as a result of tonight's episode.

On that subject, I found this video pretty amusing:

Well, I was dreading it but damn it was well done. All the foreshadowing throughout was great and the second the Rains of Castamere started playing ... :awesome. Have to say though, the way they killed of TV!Jeyne was particularly brutal, if well done.

Other than the Red Wedding, not much else was memorable, though I was slightly confused about the Daenarys and Yunkai bit. Did they actually mention something about causing a slave revolt in the planning scene or did I just miss it?

Also, reading all the comments from people who haven't read the books was fucking hilarious. So much rage!

Then I have a feast for you Tehan. Sate thyself on the misery of non-book noobs!

EDIT: Perhaps the only good thing about Xbox One is that we'll have a nice hi-def camera to take reaction shots for us now, none of this portrait filming bullshit. Not sure how to get it from Microsoft though...

I recommend reading the Game of Thrones Facebook wall posts, as well as this Twitter account for the best sources of non-book reader lulz.

I've always wanted to see a AU universe where Frey decided not to go with the Red Wedding and instead decided he wanted Casterly Rock in exchange for his forces.

Father to a Queen < Lord of the Richest Holdings.

It would be a good fanfic.

In other news, great episode. Soul crushing. The look on Catelyn's face at the end was horrifying. She deserves all the emmys for this episode.

Oh god, I'd only read the first two books... I kept thinking like, no... no, they're only flesh wounds! Rob's gonna be fine! Arya's gonna save the wolf! Catelyn is going to do something cray cray and save the day from underneath that table!

But no. They're just all dead. Jesus. I tried to stay away from spoilers, but somehow I managed to get the impression that Rob Stark became a total badass from something bad happening, not that he was gonna die in like two episodes. ARgh.

This Casterly Rock business is just some pie-in-the-sky bullshit to aggrandize the Young Wolf and make him into some tragic hero who his enemies conspired to beat right in the nick of time (which is why I hate it). The truth is that he had,as a strategist, utterly failed and had lost all forward momentum and Walder Frey,a selfish bastard, knew this. There's no way in hell he'd side with Robb in order to get Casterly Rock.

They couldn't lure the Greyjoys with that bullshit, not sure why the cautious Lord Walder would swallow that.

This show has hit all the major high-points for me now,Baelor, Blackwater and the Red Wedding, it can die sated.

Also: if you watch the reaction vids about ten-twenty percent of the people basically say
:"Cut her throat" to Cat. lol yes, if your favorite character can't win kill some random extra just cause. I think the spirit of Westeros/GRRM has leaked into far too many people.

Oh, I know this. As someone who loves fanfics, I just thought it would be an interesting AU story. How would the story change if they captured Casterly Rock? Would anyone else join them? Would Arya be reunited with her family? Etc, etc. You would have to change something to get Frey to agree though. I'm just saying it's a great divergent point.

Damn. Even having read the books, the Red Wedding was no less terrible to watch. It was beautifully done.
