Wait you think Eren is unlikeable? How so? I really don't see any problem with him so far, maybe I will when I see it from your perspective.

Yeah... Just finished Shinsekai Yori. That was something, all right. It certainly wasn't a fucking happy ending, though.

Every time I recall something from Shinsekai Yori, or even think the words "From the New World", I get goosebumps and this chilling, empty feeling that leaves me uncomfortable, anxious and intensely nostalgic - as if I'm recalling a distant and significant portion of my life. It's utterly bizarre for me to still be affected like that for an anime I finished months ago.

Yeah I just finished Shinsekai Yori the other day as well. You weren't lying about the mindfuck. I felt like I was watching a train wreck, unable to do anything but watch in abject horror. I right from when they met the false minoshiro I had this feeling of what I can only describe as general unease. Some part of me had an idea from that moment on where the series was heading. Yet still somehow the ending still completely through me through the loop. I ended up unable to fall asleep till three in the morning.

Yeah, I just caught up to date and this left me utterly baffled. The only resemblance I could find was in the fact that all three are the protagonists of their series.

The childhood friend is awesome though

But I recall her slapping him upside the head (deservedly, unlike Sakura or Rin) when he's an idiot. Not really submissive behaviour.

She's also in love with him, thought I suppose I understand how one could see her actions as a result of that as dependant.

But to compare him to Naruto and Shirou? He slaughters the slavers that kidnap her with a knife when he's six because he thinks they're no better than animals and deserve it. He also never regrets it.

His lifelong dream is to also slaughter all the titans (I'm using his words here), right down to the last one. He doesn't fuck around.

In fact the only gripe I have with the show is the direction it's begun to take lately with him having titan powers. I would have preferred for them to eventually win as vanilla humans, but dem japs love to give their awesome protags supernatural powers. It's like they don't think someone can be awesome without them. It doesn't break the show, but it was a letdown for me.

Overall, the show is super dark and the Titans are just downright creepy. Mostly likable characters (except for Armin imo, but that's just because he's so far an utterly unremarkable teen in a fucked up situation) and the plot is super interesting in the way most post-apocalyptic setting stories are. I'm constantly wondering what exactly these titans are, where they came from, what they want and the origins of these super titans.

Each answer just gives me more questions, which I love as long as the show doesn't last for six million episodes without giving you anything *coughLOSTcough*

I love it. I recommend it. Don't let Nemrut's mini-rant stop you from watching it.

It's only two episodes in at the moment but I'd recommend Watamote to someone looking for a comedy. I don't think I could ask for a better adaptation from the manga; it really captures the cringe-worthy, but hilarious, awkwardness. If you're the least bit shy, socially anxious or whatever you want to call it, you can probably relate to the main character.

Tomoko's even cuter when animated and voiced. Dat stutter.

Holy shit! Sword Art Online is coming to Adult Swim/Toonami! Not sure if you guys have read the manga but the concept is pretty cool and I'm excited for this! Although the story was kinda rushed but still, next Saturday at 2 am :)

How are they getting around all the incest? Are they just not gonna show the second half of the show?

Solution: Kirito's friend is studying in america, and asked Kirito to look after his little sister, and they've known each other for a long time.

Not really a fan of the manga - it cuts out a bit too much from the story, imo. The light novels are great though, and the show does a much better job of representing them, I think.

Now that I think about it, just not showing the second half would probably work better for them than trying to edit it into something palatable. Granted, that's also true for the whole show.

Dammit, they seriously need to boost up their catalog if SAO made the cut.

I just finished NHK ni Youkoso. I... don't even know. Really. I thought I was fucking desensitized to drama, but I couldn't finish this in one sitting. Somewhere around episode thirteen I just got up and said "I can't watch this anymore." Too fucking bleak. I was legitimately wishing for the protagonist to end his own life, and not out of any sense of malice on my part. Don't know if I recommend this.

I do. It's a great show about horrible and scary people. Too bad it has a happy ending when none of the characters deserved one.

Welcome to the NHK is very very very good and I recommend it to anyone.

It succeeds on every level, be it from eliciting emotions, bringing a compelling story that you want to know what happens, realistic characters (in the frame they are introduced in, obviously), some GREAT music and OP/ED's.

    What Azira said.

I also recommend reading the light novel and/or the manga.

Watamote is hilarious. Tomoko is pure foreveralone and I'm rooting for her so badly; but she just epically fails over and over lol. It is the show that I look forward to the most every week. I just started reading the manga, which by the way is also awesome.

Well, after three people telling me how wrong I am and how much people in general seem to view the main character of this show, that is, overwhelmingly positively, which, I'll be honest, shocked me more than it should, I decided that maybe I was in the wrong here and continued watching, catching up with all the released episodes as of this post (17).

While I do not regret picking it up again, and that I, overall, do like this anime, I am also not unchanged about my previous opinion. But I admit that my opinion had been rather one-sided, so, here is a more comprehensive view.

So yeah, the side cast got better although I still can't really remember the names of the people who are not Mikasa, Eren and Amin. (Sascha and Jean, I guess) The plot is still pretty good overall, with a rather tense atmosphere and a solid, mysterious setting that does convey the emotions it wants to.

The mystery of the titans is, so far, handled rather well, as is that about the wall (who and how they built it while being under siege) although I kinda doubt that we will get satisfying answers about them.

Action is pretty good, with great animation, intense score and a rather awesome first opening that's rather epic.

However, I still don't understand how you guys are able to stand Eren. To me, he is the one single thing that is really holding this anime back from achieving greatness. He is utterly unlikable, being a whiny bitch to pretty much everyone, spouting lectures and declaring that he will slaughter every titan, which sounds impressive and more badass than "I want to become Hokage" or "I want to save everyone", yeah, but the goal is just as dumb if you think even a second about it, since all he does is get his ass kicked until
he pulls a super-power out of his ass, which, I'll be honest, wasn't handled all that badly although I would have preferred it that hadn't happened and we would have a clear "vanilla humans vs monsters" theme.

Am kinda sick off shounen characters screaming their unreasonable ambitions while it is clear that they are unfit for it, lest the plot gives them contrived powers.

Like, he just had reverted back from being a Titan (and death, sorta) and Mikasa expresses concern and all he does is bitch at her that he is "not her son or brother" for little to no reason, except that he is a whiny bag of dicks.

Or how he insists that she should not come with him or that he would do it alone, despite the fact that he is so much worse than she is, making it a dumb matter of pride that no one can afford in their situation.

Although I knew that Eren was going come back after being eaten (yeah, as I am that lucky) I would have loved it if Mikasa had become the new main character and we would continue to see her picking up Eren's dream of killing all the Titans, except that she would actually be able to do that.

So, yeah, Eren is hard to stomach, at least to me, and I vastly prefer Mikasa, Armin and pretty much every other side character and wish that they had more screen time. Even though he got better in the last episodes, when he appeared. I guess, as long as he is not bitching around or screaming lectures, he is endurable.

That said, Armin is a cool character and how he develops, same with Jean and his progression. The rest of the characters are distinguishable and interesting although I still haven't learned most of their names and seeing that there are not that many episodes left, I doubt I will. Lastly, Mikasa is still my favourite character and I do enjoy that pretty much everyone (except for Eren) recognizes the fact that she is outrageously strong and capable and my favourite moments have been her scaring people into submission. I still heavily dislike this dependence that she has for Eren, on how her whole life is pretty much defined by him and I wish she would free herself from that unfortunate shackle but I will take what I get.

Overall, I truly enjoy this anime and pretty much every aspect of it except for the main character and even that one gets marginally better over time.

It could have been easily better but what there is, is worth watching. That said, off to look for fanfiction.

I don't really see Eren as being whiny so much as I see him as being an endless fount of rage. He isn't whining, he has a hair trigger and rants constantly when he's pissed off, explaining precisely why he's pissed off to everyone around him. That's why his primary motivation - in his words - isn't to protect anyone or anything, it's to slaughter his enemy. They have enraged him, thus they must die.

Mikasa, as far as I see it,
is so completely attached to Eren because he's all she has left of her childhood after those human traffickers killed her parents, with a little PTSD mixed in (from the events with her parents.) That's why she flew so far off the deep end when Eren died. At that point, she had nothing left to live for, so she freaked the fuck out until she ran out of gas and snapped out of it.

Yes to both but that doesn't make either thing more bearable. I knew why they were like that, I said that I don't like them being that way. And what Eren does still amounts to whining about something, only that he is whining about wanting to kill all titans.
