Don't be fooled by the second sentence in the summary, this is not another MarySue!OC-centric story. Basically the premise is the Red Wedding still happens but Dacey and the Smalljon survive by mere luck and, while recovering from their injuries with the help from a small family disgusted by Walder Frey's actions, they receive reports of another badly injured survivor in a neighboring house... a survivor that turns out to be the badly injured King in the North.
Meanwhile Brynden "Blackfish"Tully retrieves Jeyne Westerling from Lannister forces and escorts the Queen in the North to the only place he thinks they will be safe: Castle Black, seat of Jon Snow, newly appointed Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.

I didn't like the Robb survival fic either. I found myself skimming most of it.

 

^ Yeah, even though Dacey isn't an OC, she kinda felt like one. Also didn't like the way the author formatted it. If you're going to give the character a pov chapter, do it, don't skip around.

 

But when I get back home tomorrow, I might. I'm going to write a short interlude before the next chapter, though.

 

I admit the Robb survival story is not the best fic around but it's the closest thing to give a foundation for a badass!Robb archtype without giving him loads of skills or political alliances that he didn't even work for like Crossing the Freys did. Right now it's more of a guilty pleasure that I follow for all the potential it has.

I've been thinking of writing an ASoIaF fic myself but work and life haven't left me any time to write right now. However, I managed to put together two plot bunnies I really want to see someday either written by me or anyone for that matter. It would be really cool if you guys tell me what you think about them:

1) Story Idea 1: The Mad King thinks death is too much of a gift for the man who threatened his only heir so he promises Brandon Stark he'll take everything from him before he lets him die. Brandon still has to endure seeing his father murdered before his eyes plus all the physical and psychological torture Aerys puts him through. By the time the Lannisters take King's Landing and liberate him he's a changed and broken man who makes Sandor Clegane look like a supermodel. He returns to the North with Catelyn as his wife and with her help he manages to at least regain some of his former self but his paranoia remains, growing only worse with the Greyjoys invading the North during their short rebellion. This gives him the initiative to start militarizing the North (e.g. going to White Harbor and have a talk with the Manderlys about creating some sort of Northern navy). By the time the game of thrones starts with Jon Arryn's death the Seven Kingdoms are filled with whispers of Winterfell and its scarred lord.

The fic would explore how Brandon's survival changes the game and the characters (imagine Brandon losing his shit and crushing Sansa's dreams when she mentions her dreams of living in the south). Also since Ned never became Lord of Winterfell he would be serving in Robert's Kingsguard (honestly, with all that honor and duty deeply ingrained in his brain I don't understand why no one has ever written an awesome Kingsguard!Ned fic) or married to a living (and plotting revenge for Elia) Ashara Dayne as Lord of Starfall.

2) Story Idea 2: Set at the start of Robert's Rebellion. Roose Bolton wants very few things, one of them is to leave a legacy, a heir to carry his family's name but the gods are cruel and his seed will never root (I feel sorry for the Maester explaining this to him). In a rare moment of depression he drops a big fuck you on Ned Stark and refuses to participate in the upcoming rebellion. Time passes and as he prepares for the massive shitstorm he'll receive if the rebel forces win news arrive from King's Landing: The loyalist forces under the command of Prince Rhaegar are victorious, the only major casualty being the Mad King, murdered by Jaime Lannister. Now Rhaegar is prepared to reign with Queens Elia and Lyanna by his side, and he has an odd request: Ned Stark will be pardoned and released as a sign of mercy but to ensure his good behavior his newborn son Robb will be taken hostage and given to the only house in the north that remained loyal: the Boltons. And so starts the story of the wolf pup raised among the stench of flayed men.

The subplot for this story would be Cersei marrying Viserys Targaryen and convincing him he would be a better ruler than Rhaegar, starting a different game of thrones.

So, as fellow readers, what story sounds more enticing?

 

The Roose idea was meh, but the other idea has something to it. At least the Mad King keeping Brandon as a hostage of sorts and I really like the idea of Ned being Kingsguard, never thought of that (mainly cause there's not really a reason for him to be anything but Lord of Winterfell). Could just go the route with Jon being Ashara's son, like you said, which wouldn't be that bad of an idea. All put together like that it sounds kinda fun.

 

I like the 1st idea as well.

 

Ugh, was reading a Jon time-travel story (...I know, right?) on FF and then here I am flicking through stories on AO3 and what do I stumble upon? Same time-travel story with a eventual Jon/Robb tag.

 

Slightly off topic, what was the LOTR one called?

 

Similar tragic situations have happened to me many times, though that sounds especially gutwrenching. I would have been eating up a time travel Jon story too :/
