And a Better Fate if anyone's still following it. Glanced over it, back to being fairly good, but over all was pretty meh. Link

On a related note, while at an expo in Australia, GRR, confirmed his contempt for fanfiction, saying its lazy writing, and that he hopes that no one but him will ever write in his world.

Which kinda sucks since the odds of this obese old man dying before he finishes the series are damn high.

At this point that is sort of like hoping nuclear weapons won't proliferate outside of the US and Russia.

To be fair to George, the most contact he's probably ever had with fanfiction is a quick glance at the new section of Fanfiction.Net. As a result, he probably shares the view of fanfiction that most of the world has: of illiterate fangirls getting their favourite characters to fuck.

Ignorance is a viable excuse only if you don't keep talking about the subject.

Anyway, I just wonder what's his opinion about this then.

Oh, that's perfectly fine, it was professionally produced. Actual planning was involved, unlike all fanfiction. ;)

You guys seem to have forgotten that anyone with a sufficiently strong will can throw it off. Not saying it's not powerful, but it's not absolute. You can't control "any person".

Is it any person with a sufficiently strong will or any magical being with a sufficiently strong will?

I see absolutely nothing indicating magical anything in the interaction apart from the spell doing it's thing in the first place. It's just deciding you don't want to do what the spell is telling you to and having enough willpower to pull off ignoring the impulse.

You could say it requires being magical to fight it off, but it's just a completely baseless assumption. This isn't like potions where we've been told you need to be magical for the ingredients to work.

There's nothing magical about moving a stick through the air and saying a word either. That doesn't mean Muggles can cast spells.

Yes there is, it's called the wand. Also the spell. That's, y'know, literally magical.

Anyway, the point I was making is that obviously casting a spell or creating a potion is magical and can only be done by a wizard, because in one case it's obvious, and in the other we've been told you need to be magical. There is nothing of the sort in resisting the imperious curse. It is literally baseless to assume that it requires being a wizard. You could make it so if you want that in a story you're writing, but so could you make it not so. Both are equally valid.

Somewhat irrelevant, as this would also be true in the case of a Muggle waving a wand and saying an incantation.

Your argument is that there's nothing obviously magical about the process of countering the Imperius curse.

This is also true of casting all spells. There is nothing obviously magical about the process of spellcasting.

This shows that the lack of magic-use in the performance of an action does not mean a Muggle can do it.

Your reply is that spellcasting is "obviously" magical.

My reply is the same: resisting the Imperius is obviously magical. A Muggle countering the Imperius makes about as much sense as a Muggle casting Finite Incantatum. Maybe a Muggle has a strong enough will, just as a Muggle is capable of saying the incantation and making the wand movements. But they lack that essential ingredient to perform magic: being magical.

While I'm leaning more towards Taure's logic, I have to stress that there is no evidence to support either case. At least there is nothing in canon that, in my memory, confirms or denies that a muggle could potentially throw off the Imperius or other controlling magics.

Hence, it is pointless to argue about what is essentially personal opinion.

I would disagree that it's obvious. It's most likely case, but since from what little we know about a pure mechanics of the spell, if it affect your will (as an abstract, not as a brain) and a strong one can resist it then it's not much of a stretch that any, wizard's or not, will will do.

Voldemort basically toppled the ministry with few imperios. You don't have to use it on everyone, just the on right person at the right time.

I found this story earlier today. It has some potential and the author seems like he knows his stuff if my steady stream of google searches are correct. A Legion for Westeros

The story is about a Roman Legion finding itself transported to Westeros about 2/3rds of the way through the first book. It's still really short, but what I've read so far has been promising.

A Legion for Westeros seems promising, I will follow it for now.

The House of Elendil updated, things are getting interesting and slightly more off the rails.
