Personally my peeve when it comes to rewrites is rewrites of fics with interesting ideas that add in completely unnecessary extraneous crap (one assumes its to 'give it originality').

I think the best example of this is the fic Harry Potter & The New Life by SilverAegis. I think this is an interesting idea for a fic and it has been rewritten approximately eleventy billion times. But it seems that every rewrite adds something... stupid. Sometimes they add slash. Sometimes they give Harry even more rediculous superpowers (as if being given a made-up ability like ShadowMage doesn't give enough latitude for being amazingly overpowered). Sometimes they add an extra character who's even more overpowered Sue than the Harry. Oh, and then they abandon the fic at roughly the same word count as the original anyway.

    Urgh.

I certainly wouldn't expect anyone who decided to do a pointless rewrite of someone else's story to be able to continue the story for more than a chapter or two after reaching the end of the existing story.

Same reason why putting stories up for "adoption" is utterly pointless.

Kiddie porn. I mean seriously. I don't want to read explicit sex scenes about eleven year olds. I really don't want to read explicit sex scenes about an eleven year old and their 60 year old teachers.

Where in the world do you read stories like that and why do you read stories like that?

ff.net? Once I bothered with sending mail as explained on https://www.fanfiction.net/support/ after encountering something like this, but they failed to do anything.

Ah, that's more of a remake than a rewrite, though: It's a new author just using the same concept and possibly cribbing much of the writing from the original, rather than the original author going back through their own story and fixing things.

But, yes, it can be very annoying. Often the original stories get abandoned, and what the reader really wants is for the story to be completed... not to read another author's remake of that story with a bunch of unnecessary bullshit like superpowers, ninjas, or whatever tacked on, only to get abandoned Yet Again!

And, often, the remake gets abandoned with even fewer chapters to its name than the original.

Mock-anything. Holy shit this is annoying for some reason.

    "Harry mock-glared at Ron."

"Hermione looked at them in a mock-angry expression."

Note to people who do this: How about you assholes mock-fuck yourself with this cartoonish bullshit?

Fine, you have a point that it has a place. But come on with the overuse of this. It's like authors cannot have genuinely funny scenes so they either have 'mock reactions', 'hitting the shoulder' or 'clever pranks'. In all my life I have seen 'mock glares' only a few times, but if you believe FF writers, it happens everyday.

This isn't about humor, this is about characters that are not acting human.

I do mock things all the time, especially mock-glare and mock-laugh.

My friends, family, and I do that often enough. I'm pretty sure we qualify as human. Sometimes we mock 'cry' when we lose a game, now and again we mock 'rage' when a team we're cheering for fails, sometimes we mock 'glare' when someone makes a bad pun/joke or farts etc etc. It's all just meant to cause laughs, and often enough it works.

Communicative and interactive practices vary from social group to social group. I personally haven't found it that uncommon. Whereas you're painting it to be a once in a blue moon occurrence.

The action and practice is sourced in Humanity. So 'not acting human' doesn't make any sense.

Hm, maybe I'm just biased by my own personal experiences. But I am speaking honestly when I say that I have seen this only very rarely if at all.

I've thought about this for a while, and have decided that my least favourite thing is when Harry or any other character(usually a über-amazing-smart muggle) looks at the magical world and just sees everything that's wrong with it instead of being completely amazed, because magic! From someone who's lived in the belief that 'there's no such thing as magic', discovering that you're a wizard shouldn't be met with the reaction 'what the fuck you use quills lol wizards this is so backwards look at the muggles pens PAPER WITH LINES' it should be met with 'holy fucking shit this is so awesome'.

Also, I don't like Harry crying. Or not eating when offered food.

It's probably been said before, but I'm going to say it because it annoys the fuck out of me.

    Walls o' text.

FORMAT YOUR SHIT, YO. I'M NOT READING THAT. I don't care if you the re-incarnated soul-baby of Shakespeare and Chaucer. Fuck your walls o' text.

    You must be Frieza.

When the author seems to have a checklist of things that must be in the story because it happens on every fanfiction, even if it doesn't really contribute to the story.

And harem for the sake of harem. If it doesn't add drama, humor, context or plot, don't use it. There should be a harry potter fic with an harem a la school days.

I'm bored, so I figured I might as well stop lurking.

One of my biggest peeves is when during GoF (or any other time, but this is the most common) someone goes up to Harry and tells him how Ron is a bad friend who has no loyalty and just wants the fame and all that rot and Harry actually agrees with them.

This is then followed by the sudden realisation that said person would (obviously) be a much better friend/girlfriend despite this being their first conversation.

Just once I would like for Harry to go: "I'm sorry, what? Ron might have his faults, but he stood up to a mass-murderer, on a broken leg, in order to protect me. If that's not loyalty, I don't know what is, so take your opinion and shove off."

Also, using fanon to justify fanon characterisation, e.g.: Using the 'Potters will' which states Harry should never go to the Dursleys to show DD is 'evil' and then using the fact that DD is evil to justify the possibility of the will existing. Begging the question ftw.
