I don't think anybody wants Capaldi's run to be about how he's the final Doctor. It sounds cool in theory... but it would just be awful emo drama. Day of the Doctor got rid of a ton of angst by removing the Doctor's guilt over killing his own people, it'd be a real shame to just replace that with angst over how he's on his last remaining life. I'd rather see it dealt with in a single story.

Not only that, but I think it's way cooler to tackle the regeneration limit during the 50th Anniversary year. It's something that's been around for ages and never really been dealt with before. This is the perfect time to do it.

I'm thinking it might be better to leave it a season long mystery. Let him figure out how he's still alive while searching for Gallifrey.

I thought the thirteen thing was just a rule not a biological fact.

It's both. Time Lord science, man. Wibbly wobbly.

Basically, regeneration is a biologically hard-wired process for Gallifreyans who've become Time Lords - but regenerations and regeneration cycles can be taken away, forced, and even increased if one has the proper tools or authority (see: the Master). We didn't have any confirmation either way of whether the Doctor could add more lives to his cycle, and the fact that Gallifrey was thought to be dead and gone didn't help clear matters up at all.

But since Gallifrey's still around, even if it's lost somewhere, that means the Time Lords are still kicking, Rassilon's a possible antagonist, the Master could come back, all of Rassilon's relics are available as potential plot points, and, well. It really depends on how Moffat wants to spin things.

I'm inclined to agree with Kraken, really. It'd be hella useful to have the Doctor regenerate, and either 1) figure out how he survived past his "final" regeneration, or 2) find a way around the 12-regeneration limit of his regeneration cycle, with or without the Time Lords.

Much preferred the BBC UK one.

Is there a New Years special as well this year? Or is it just this episode, then Season 8 whenever the fuck they will release it, probably early 2015.

No New Year's Special. Just this episode and then Season 8 in the autumn of 2014.

Moffat is the biggest tease of all time.

Good episode though, many tears were had.

Wasn't really awful, just a bit boring. At least for the standards set by Day of the Doctor.

Sums up Smith's final season - moments, but ultimately dull, meandering, answered nothing and gave us very little - though that last point is exactly what the start of each new Doctor is, so... By that I mean that we get maybe 60 seconds of the new Doctor and then blam. It works, though I kind of wish they'd tried something new outside the "I've got new x, y and z!"

    Anyway, bring on Autumn 2014?

Also happy Riversong didn't show up, that character is just... Annoying.

    ...well, I enjoyed it :p

And credit to him, I think Moffat answered pretty much every hanging question I still had, and did it well. Nearly shed a tear at the regeneration, too. Nearly. I'm going to miss Smith a hell of a lot. Without question, he's my Doctor.

    Meh.

It was... alright. Compared to the send-off the 10th and 9th Doctors had (especially the 10th -- "I don't want to go."), this was incredibly underwhelming.

Then again, I thought that through most of the latest episodes, so meh.

Ah, well, I'm speaking as someone who thought Tennant's send off - or at least his victory lap - was self-indulgent and tedious. Smith's felt far classier to me, although I'll concede I may have been caught up in fanboy feels. I'll be watching it again at some stage, quite possibly tonight, so I may feel differently then.

    In more detail though:

I thought for a moment they were going to bring Galifrey back there and then - and I would have been very disappointed if they'd done that. Peeking out from the Crack to answer Clara's plea for help was...well, perhaps not quite a deus ex machina, but dangerously close, but better than the alternative.
Strangely impressed by the way Moffat's actually stuck pretty close to the 'rules' of the show. All regenerations counted, the only way to get more is the Timelords - and all it took was someone asking nicely for help. Quite sweet, actually.
The regeneration itself was really, really silly, but also really, really awesome. So it balanced out, and was an excellent summation of Smith's tenure.
Tasha Lem - anyone else get a River Song-ish vibe off her? I could almost believe that she's another regeneration...

Looking forward to Capaldi's run though!

I liked the BBC cheapness this episode had. An entire planet besieged by the mightiest races in the galaxy. How are we gonna show that? Well a single cgi shot and a bunch of dudes in camo should do it, oh and tell props to roll out the old cybermen and dalek models.

Never liked Smith so can't say I'll miss him, but this was the best send off we have had in the reboot.

I was waiting for a long yellow light regeneration but instead it was just a flash and Capaldi's menacing face making Clara back off a little and forget she was crying. Well done.

I hope Clara gets fleshed out more in the next seasons because I don't know her sacrifices so far have seemed to come out of nowhere whereas it would have been believeable if it had been Amelia.
