I think you're underestimating Hermione's stubbornness and drive. Knowing that there were groups determined to see her fail due to racial discrimination would make her all the more determined to stay and excel, I would think.

Not all that disliked Hermione did so because of the 'blood purity' issue.

The ones who disliked her enough to potentially take steps to drive her from their world did.

I believe TheWiseTomato was referring to Hermione's being Caucasian.
    And, her hermaphroditic anatomy.
    And, her Asperger's.
And, her stubborn wearing of jelly shoes, well past the eighties.

In reference to the earlier plotbunny: A Harry whose mother was being kept in St. Mungos might have financial difficulties to add to his trials. Maybe the Potter nest egg wouldn't be sufficient to both live on and pay for years of 24/7 medical care.

That's actually a really good point. Perhaps it wasn't just maternal pride that kept Augusta from getting Neville a wand of his own to begin with.

Tbh, I always thought that the seven laws of magic were not exactly good.

Doubt it. If there's one thing we learned during the series it's that Hermione is stubborn as hell.

    EDIT: Oops.

A bad plot bunny inspired by watching the first season of Arrow in two days ...

Post-CoS Summer Harry flees the Dursleys after blowing up Aunt Marge. When the Ministry responds to the incident they fail to find him in the neighbourhood or any sign that he left using magical transport like the Knight Bus. Within twenty-four hours he’s declared missing and the manhunt for Sirius Black – the presumed perpetrator – intensifies.

During the first Quidditch game of the year Black’s name is cleared when he sneaks into the castle while the students are at the game and murders Pettigrew, presenting his body to Dumbledore. He is swiftly cleared of both betraying the Potters, Pettigrew’s murder and Harry’s disappearance with Dumbledore’s help. He throws the weight of his family resources and old contacts behind the search to no avail.

Following the Quidditch World Cup disturbing signs emerge that the Dark Lord’s followers are regrouping and over the next three years they begin to make their presence felt once again.

In late 1996 two Death Eaters are killed and the survivors report that they were attacked by a hooded wizard in blue. Over the next several months several other followers of the Dark Lord are attacked or killed by the blue-robe. His identity becomes the talk of the wizarding world but the DMLE makes little progress with the case and some whisper that they don’t want to solve it, that the blue-robe is in fact one of their people.

Then, on his seventeenth birthday, Harry Potter.

From there things follow the basic superhero formula: Harry fights bad guys while trying to form meaningful friendships/romantic relationships and keep his secret identity secret.

I'm sorry but why would Sirius be let go after he has just admitted murdering someone in cold blood?

Because he was wrongly imprisoned for twelve years and the man he murdered was the one responsible for betraying the Potters and killing thirteen Muggles. I can see the Ministry not going after him after that, especially with Dumbledore bringing his influence to bear on the matter.

I can't see it. Dude actually escapes Azkaban, a place that would be more than enough to drive anyone batshit crazy, and he kills someone as soon as he does? The only person Sirius could get away with killing after escaping Azkaban would be Voldemort himself. It'd be downright ridiculous for Dumbledore to help him just walk off into the sunset. On the other hand, if Dumbledore never knew about it, I could definitely see Lupin helping him to cover up his involvement.

Some of it may sound (and probably is) somewhat cliche, but the nature of the world demands it.

Dark Universe - Good guys are bad, bad guys are even worse.

A dark, twisted caricature of the Potterverse.

It all begins in 1945 during Dumbledore's duel with Grindelwald. Temptation proves just too strong for Albus and he kills Gellert. Becoming the new master of the Elder Wand, he begins a quest for gathering the Hallows. It takes him some time, but he eventually does so two years later. He forcibly takes the Ring from his former student Tom Riddle and nearly kills the young man in Albania. He then cheats the Potters from the Cloak. Uniting all the Hallows, Albus becomes the Master of Death. Shortly after, he becomes the Minister of Magic. He does not become the Headmaster of Hogwarts though.

Lord Voldemort however rejoices in his hideout. That foolish old man willingly put the Dark Lord's Horcrux on his own finger. Knowing that thanks to Dumbledore's considerable skill, the Horcrux shall be well protected, Riddle increases his efforts to gain power. However, Albus' presence in the UK proves too problematic, so Voldemort instead begins gathering power in Albania and other nearby countries.

In canon, Dumbledore's nice and good nature influenced many wizards, it did so as well in this world, though differently.

Dark Magic is legal and not considered taboo. The Unforgivable Curses are legal as well.

Alastor Moody, a Dark Wizard and the head of the Departament of Magical Law Enforcement is Dumbledore's lap dog and a secret assassin. He offers no mercy to his targets, Dumbledore approves.

The current Headmistress of Hogwarts is one Minerva McGonagall. Known for her undying loyalty to Minister Dumbledore and her draconian ways of running the school. The whips and chains in the dungeons are very frequently used. There shall be no rule breaking in the school.

Nymphadora Tonks is considered a Witch of Interest to the DMLE. Certain sources suggest that she is a Metamorphmagus. Such an ability could prove very useful to the Ministry. Such a shame then, that Nymphadore would never even consider law enforcement. Serial killers rarely do. You see, Nymphadora is obsessed with the lives of others. She spies on her targets, learns everything she can about them and then after killing them, lives their lives until she is bored with them.

Despite being kept out of Britain, Dark Lord Voldemort managed to gain quite a few followers in the UK. The Black Brothers (Sirius and Regulus) are among his most faithful servants. Peter Pettigrew was once considered for recruitment, however his tendency to rape women was just too problematic. It wouldn't be a problem if this was limited to mudbloods and muggles, but Wormtail also helped himself to healthy pureblood daughters, which annoyed the likes of Lucius Malfoy just too much. Severus Snape gladly used Pettigrew's body parts as potion ingredients. The most disturbing thing about the Death Eaters is the source of their name: they cannibalize their victims.

The story of the Lovegood Family is a tragic one and it is all Xenophilius' fault. Being a borderline, violently insane man caused him to perform some disgusting and vile acts. He physically and magically abused his wife until she eventually could not take it anymore and killed herself. Without his favorite prey, Xenophilius moved to Luna. The poor girl was sexually abused by her despicable mockery of a father. Her sanity was eventually lost forever. Luna is now a sadomasochist and not someone to be around when her wild magic breaks loose.

Gilderoy Lockhart is not a famed writer or an adventurer in this world. Instead, his high proficiency with memory charms proved extremely useful in making Muggles forget he ever robbed them of all their possessions. Yes, Gilderoy is very rich. The lack of muggle-protection laws makes it very easy.

Though while in Britain muggles are not protected, muggleborns are still allowed to enter the magical world. They just need to know their place. However, the situation is not as bright in areas dominated by Lord Voldemort (most of Eastern Europe). There, muggleborns are murdered upon discovery.

The Weasley family has made quite the carrer in the muggle world, with the generous use of the Imperius Curse, Love Potions and other interesting applications of magic. While they make sure that no muggle actually knows about the existence of magic, they have no problems living like kings. Arthur owns a few factories, while all his children are spoiled rotten.

Werewolves are among the more dangerous servants of Voldemort. They are supposedly led by one of the more violent ones, one Remus Lupin. Though this is hard to confirm given that nobody except the Dark Lord himself ever returned alive from their territory.

The Potters are fairly unpleasant people. In her school years, Lily was a social queen, always demanding all attention to herself. She kept all other girls under her foot and ruled them with an iron fist. Some rumors claim that Lily murdered her own sister, but this is uncofirmed by official sources. James was a sadistic bully and enjoyed making the lives of others miserable, he fed on their misery. After they graduated and married, they only got one child, a son named Harry.

Harry grew up spoiled by his parents, became a bully like his father and a manipulator like his mother. When he got to Hogwarts, he ruthlessly took over the other students and just like his parents made sure that he had loyal servants. Many of them take the blame when Harry causes some trouble. One Colin Creevey has been expelled when he took the blame after Harry set the Forbidden Forest on fire.

Among Harry's most fervent followers is one Hermione Granger, accused of casting the Imperius Curse on her strongly-religious parents after they attempted to prevent her from going to Hogwarts.

And then, in 1996, Canon Harry appears in this terrible world.

    Come now, don't be difficult.

Obviously the actual plot and circumstances are important as well. Given that Harry is the Protagonist, he has the Character Shield every protagonist has.

    He'd figure out things eventually.
