It is because feudal systems are based on the personal honour/duty of the aristocratic class. And killing children/women is not something a honourable lord/person does. You can see that in a few scenes where the knightly virtues are described.

The ironic thing of course is that those children and their vassals are more or less equally honour bound to rebel because you killed their parents.
So yeah the pragmatic thing would be to kill the children but they don´t do it because they "all" see themselves/need to be seen as being above such things.

Ned is honorable, not practical. His telling Cersei of the plot is what brought his demise in canon. And also what started the war of the 5k.
He's the type to oppose ruthless, but necessary measures.
It's somewhat admirable. Foolish, but admirable.

And next time you fight ,you better win because if you loose you and your whole familly will be killed. Making almost all wars wars to the knife to killed or be killed and no atrocity too great or too horrowfying.

Except Aerys was the one who did this? You know, when he demanded the heads of the heirs to two kingdoms because...uh, something.

Not to mention that your argument is true for large-scale wars for control when imperial authority has broken down or is under incredible threat, not so much for most other wars.

I have a quick question to anyone who might answer it. I was browsing AO3 recently looking for some Jon centric fics, and everywhere I look there is Jon/Sansa.
What the hell is up with all the god damn Jon/Sansa fics everywhere?

Most of those fics tend to have Jon be the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna, don't they?

I think people just like having someone white knight Sansa.

Well, there are not that many alternatives in people's minds, probably. SanSan is...well, more Beauty and Beast, if you dig the whole "man with a tragic past that someone has to heal" thing. Nobody aside from the Starks is truly White Knight material and doing a Robb/Sansa pairing is probably too incestuous for a lot of people. Jon's fairly popular in the fandom, still (probably?) alive and fits the role. His only problem is the Stark blood and that can be mitigated somewhat by making R+L = J true.

Why not make a separate thread for So Soars the Young Falcon? It's over 50k and frequently updated.

It wouldn't really garner or warrant all that many replies on its own. Besides, it's nice and cozy here in this thread.

Off topic but Ash are you guys going to do any more episode breakdowns for History of Westeros? Much preferred your first one to the official one we get in the UK (called Thronecast, I don't know if there's a US equivalent).

Ignore this, I've just seen you've done loads, for some reason the link I had to the blog (through your sig) kept taking me to an old page, so I assumed no updates. Gonna have a watch now :D

Two new chapters for "So Soars the Young Falcon":

    Dunsten

    Lyanna

Lyanna seems to be getting more unhinged with each new chapter. Or at least that's the impression I'm getting at. Now that her child is dead, she's asking herself if her nephew, Jon, would avenge her. Avenge her? For what, exactly?

    And then there's this part:

Really? Hearing that, she smirks? I have no idea if the author is trying to make me completely loathe Lyanna, but if he is, he's doing a superb job.

The author does a pretty good job of making me unsympathetic towards Lyanna. Even more towards Arthur Dayne who comes of as a douchebag. And the part about Gerold Hightower?

Aerys' Kingsguard is shaping to be a real piece of work. I wonder what we'll find out about Ser Oswell Whent?

Are there any more decent fics besides "So Soars The Young Falcon"? There haven't been new recs in a few weeks.

    Nope.

Well, I suppose you might take a look at Frozen Fire if you haven't already. This has probably been recommended before in the thread, but dunno how recently.

Personally, I'm not a great fan of it, mainly because it's Daenerys/Robb-centric, more or less, but a friend, who was the one to initially recommend it to me, says that if you don't mind that, like I do, you could probably gain some small enjoyment from reading it.

I wouldn't advise you to go looking blindly on AO3 for ASOIAF fics, as most of the time you'll encounter SanSan shit.

Salamon2(author of So Soars...) has posted his replies to the reviews from last chapter(Lyanna) and I get that it's going to get kinda meh. Excuses. Excuses and what not. Lyanna not only is crazy in this one but also insulated against reason and pathologically stupid. It will be a real cake to read her interactions with others.

I just keep worrying we'll get the same old Robert that we know, one prone to drinking senselessly and whoring around. I mean, the whole drinking business was basically because he despaired of being a King when he never truly wanted that. The whoring... eh, I always thought of it as Robert wanting to live life to the fullest as much as he could before he got forced to settle down in a marriage, but he continued that on with Cersei in their marriage as they grew to despise each other over the years.
