Could be hilarious: "Madam Pomfrey lost all her patients trying to keep Harry in the Hospital Wing"

More of a FF.Net/internet peeve, but there's a difference between a single opening quote, and a apostrophe. They're not straight lines, and when a letter is dropped from the beginning of a word, it should have an apostrophe, not a single opening quote.

Petty? Absolutely. Still peeves me off, though.

In my fic, he gets long hair over the course of a year because he doesn't see the need to waste time getting it cut, since he believes he won't be living very long. In other words, it's an inverted visual representation of his life.

In one word? Bishonen. They want to make him one of those androgynous pretty boys japanese shoujo (and some shonen) seem to love.

It's quite annoying how many people use the word 'defiantly' when they mean 'definitely'.

And then in Naruto-fanfiction. Ugh, so many people still write that Minato used the Reaper death Seal to summon the Death God and get it to seal Kurama inside of Naruto. It was revealed at the end of 2009 that Kurama was infact sealed inside Naruto with the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style - and his other half of chakra was sealed inside Minato through the Reaper Death Seal.

It's been near enough 5 years since it was revealed, yet so many writers don't even know it. I wish they'd put more research into canon before writing.

Another FF dot net formatting peeve.

The way they've set up their pages, I can't get any of my titles to align properly. The top line is always off by a few inches because of the stupid navigation buttons.

Tried using a bunch of different things, including html breaks and hidden text to fix it, but nothing worked.

Dreams that main characters have that explains everything but never remembers. I kinda hate them.

Same with them being memory charmed, it's rather frustrating.

Most of the time the author is going for foreshadowing, but instead just spells it out.

I hate when authors shorten a character's name that was already short to begin with. Harry to Har or Sirius to Siri. It is so ridiculously pointless and irritating.

I've seen Harry->Har before; it really does make me want to stab the author to death.

I've never felt like Harry Potter's 'Harry' needed to be shortened, but if you really want to, you can. It shortens to Hal, and has done for at least four hundred years - cf. Henry IV parts 1 and 2 by William motherfucking Shakespeare.

    Fucking Har. Cunts.

I prefer none of these stupid pet names. But Mione would be the lesser of two evils. Herm or Hermy - that is hardly a flattering pet name for a girl, makes me think of 'Herman'.

....As if I need even more of a reason to dislike Hermione.

And on the note of Hermione and pet peeves. Hermione-sue is a big one for me. So many people make her out to be some kind of genius and have the answer to everything. Personally, as far as canon is concerned I saw nothing that could indicate more than above average intelligence.

She has like no big feats. The best would probably have been the Polyjuice Potion but even that was just copying instructions from a book.

Honestly, I used to like Hermione before all her fanboys ruined her character for me. Nowadays if she's done well I can like her, and if not I tolerate her. But the more people fanboy over her the lower my opinion goes because they make her the be all and end all to everything.

Fanboys ruin the characters for everybody else in my own opinion.

I've never seen Hal used. Kinda wish I had now, would make all this 'Hadrian' and 'Har' crap much easier to tolerate. 'Hal' kinda reminds me of 'Hao' and makes me think of that guy from Shaman king. And I'm surprisingly okay with that, cuz' that guy was awesome.

I have a vague memory of seeing it used once in a smutfic. I might look for it later.

As for Hermione, when I started out reading ff about a decade ago ( god I'm so old ;_; ) I was an H/Hr shipper, but I gradually came to hate her due to various fics. Now I'm ambivalent, I guess, but I have to agree with you on Herm(y). If my name was Hermione and someone called me that, fur would fly.

Her ability to remember, integrate the knowledge, and then use it in spells, potions, etc. before anyone else is most definitely a sign of something more than above average intelligence.

But outside of that, you're right. I despise Hermione-sue type stories where the character basically becomes Hermione ex machina.

Well considering she is a SI in canon it is kinda expected that she would have Mary sue like qualities.

Pet peeve: long duels where both parties receive multiple injuries.

Firstly, there's no reason in a duel to use spells that couldn't incapacitate your opponent in one hit. In many ways the Stunning Charm is the perfect duelling spell, given that all it has to do is touch the opponent and you've won. (And that alone makes the endless fanfic rants against using "fourth year magic" stupid).

The only spell that's better is the Killing Curse, which is basically a stunning charm that also can pass through any magical defence. (From the perspective of winning a duel, that a person remains permanently disabled after the duel is not relevant).

Of course there are reasons to use other spells, especially if some spells are innately more powerful than others. Another reason to use other spells is to get around an opponent's defences, which the stunning charm might not be able to break through, or to manouever an opponent into a position where they can't defend themselves. But for direct attacks you would still pick spells that make you win if they hit. There are plenty of them.

So there's no reason for all these duels that go on forever with each party scoring multiple hits.

Secondly, even if you do happen to hit your opponent with a less-than-incapacitating spell, the effect of that spell will negatively effect your opponent's performance. Pain, discomfort, loss of mobility, strange sensations, loss of sensory function... these are all things that would negatively affect your ability to duel. A small twinge in your ankle should be enough to decide a duel between two otherwise equal opponents. The moment you get a hit on someone, you should gain the upper hand and win soon enough.

I imagine duels as quickfire exchanges that last a couple of minutes at the most, and that's only between two almost perfectly matched competent fighters. Most duels I see being over within a matter of ten seconds.

Add slow motion and a plenty of talking so you can have the fight last 10 minutes despite the actual thing lasting 15 seconds.

Or in a less fillery way just have the fights be of multiple combatants in a not open space that is rather big where people aren't willing to stand in one place and duke it out. Those together will give plenty of fight time for a movie.

That, of course, is predicated on there being no "magical core" or even physical/emotional strength somehow linked to magic. I can accept no magical core, but I can't accept magic not somehow taking some kind of toll on the person, since every act we engage in, whether its mental, physical, or emotional, takes output from the total being to accomplish it.
