I suppose this can count as a pet peeve: when Fleur can speak English without the mangling/distortion of words, yet still says 'Arry instead of Harry. Why? Just why?

It's fairly common to retain elements of you L1 pronunciation even after reaching fluency in your L2. For example, though better than it used to be, my Spanish is still littered with unintentional schwa sounds.

I get really irritated by past and passed. You passed by something or you went past. Totally different.

Sure, but did your past pass by, or your pass past pass?

    Forcefully versus Forcibly.

Forcefully: Full of force, confidently, done with strength...
Something was done in a powerful, confident, and/or effective way.

Forcibly: Enacted or effected by force...
    Something was done by force.

Now, I will admit there is some overlap between these two words, but there are some subtleties at play here that sometimes make one a better choice than the other.

'Generic protagonist forcefully thrust into his generically attractive lover.'
Translation: Some people like it a little rough, and that's okay. Generic protagonist is a virile and, hopefully, thoughtful lover.

'Generic protagonist forcibly thrust into his generically attractive lover.'
Translation: Rape scene! This reads like a rape scene! It was poorly written, already, but your inability to detect subtleties in your own writing, and make appropriate word choices, have turned this into a rape scene! Generic protagonist is suddenly revealed as a vile and, undoubtedly, thoughtless predator.:fire

But, hey, that's just the impression that I get.

Huh, actually, when I read that, "forcefully" came across wrong to me (to the ear). Not saying it is technically wrong at all, but it just didn't sound right in my head when I read it.

Maybe this is one of those "defined by previous reading" things?

I've read a fic a few months ago with the following sentence: "Let me Brighton your day!"

A couple of new ones that are vaguely related.

PreHogwarts!Harry. These fics are singularly frustrating because the good ones never get anywhere. They go far enough to demonstrate the proficiency of the author, but never far enough to actually get to some plot. If you have grand sweeping story that demands that we know about Harry's life at age 4 then either stick a compressed summary in the prologue or tell it via flashbacks. I don't want to read 80k words about Harry's boring muggle life, just for the fic to be abandoned when the good stuff starts.

Elfling!Harry. The cancer infecting HP/LotR crossovers. It's Harry Potter. Not in Hogwarts. Without magic. And he doesn't look like Harry any more. And since he's now in the body of a three year old he's going to act like one, so he doesn't even act like Harry. Every now and then I want to read a crossover where an older Harry falls into a crossover and spends his time beating people up with ludicrously overpowered HP magic. Think Wand and Shield or The Havoc Side of the Force. Why is there no LotR version of this story? Mass Effect has two like this while LotR pretty much just has two stories across the whole category. Elfling!Harry and HarryAndLegolasHaveButtBabies.

Know how you feel here. Started reading one a while back, was 500k or so long I believe. Got 80k in before deciding, wow, I'm really over Harry being 8 right now. Let's go read the reviews for each chapter doing a ctrl-f of Hogwarts to find out when this story actually gets somewhere.

Well. I found out alright. He doesn't. That's for the sequal that is now being written. I am not reading 500k words of Harry having a nicer life and making friends before fucking Hogwarts.

    Can't stand any out-of-Hogwarts-era.

    500k words about pre-hogwarts Harry?

Was it literally about how his life went or was there some action or something like that.
I mean 500k is a lot of words if you write about a normal life.

What was the name of the story?

I also don't like when HP magic is downplayed in crossovers.

This will alienate me from you folks, but I think that removing Harry's wand from him (like the majority of crossovers with Dresden do) is a terrible idea.

Why would you make a crossover with HP and make Harry the protagonist if you are not going to use HP magic.

Yes, Potterverse magic is overpowered, so what? That's its charm.

Should I read it? or is it a definite no?

Because from the chapter names I can see that it has Harry living with Sirius and such, which makes it more interesting than Harry living with the Dursleys without any knowledge of the magical world.

From what I can gather he lives with Sirius, at first he's still a criminal (never got to a point where he had been cleared), and they establish a bunch of connections with people throughout the story.

If you want to read it you can, but don't expect any Hogwarts until the sequel is done.

EDIT: From memory it wasn't poorly written or anything, the English was good (I think), the story telling was fine. I just don't care for non-hogwarts much.
