...what fics have you been reading that have featured that? I have never seen that.

I went through a phase where I'd read nearly 500,000 words a day in HP fanfiction. It stretched for several weeks, and in that I trawled through a lot of stuff. I hit between 8 and a couple dozen that featured various WoT ripoffs (with a couple crossovers). Some were well written from a grammar standpoint but had poor storylines, others were just terrible. There may have been one for the Almost Recommended thread, but I'd have to try to retrace my steps.

    Hehehe.

I posted this a while back, in the Slither Hither thread, but the link went dead. So...

    Also, this.

I looked for the picture in the link for about an hour today before simply posting JKR's, lol. That one in the link is by far the best, though.

The one I posted took me forever to find, and I'm the one who made it. :(

The one I linked to, however, was already in my imgur account (since I spent forever looking for it the last time I needed it).

One of those is not a word; I hope you put the utmost effort into finding out which one is.

It's worse when instead of Snape it is Voldemort who is the one receiving the fangirl attention.

I mean, this snake face must be so dreamy, right? :facepalm

But one was kind enough to try and explain it:

    Why ladies love Snape

    Yes...helping.

I'm pretty sure women have just deluded themselves as to what is character actually is. At least they're getting lady-boners from Alan Rickman and not Snape himself...that's something at least.

God, the movies ruined everything. (I actually hate them except for the first 2, maybe 3).

Wat? Was Lily blind during all of Harry's life? Snape was just a bitter cunt that sought revenge after Voldemort for killing his waifu. Harry took a lot of shit from Snape in the books. I can't recall what it was like in the movies. Was he less abrasive?

There's really nothing rational about liking Snape. Sure, you could admire him for how far he would go for vengeance, but other than that? Nope.

I've gotta say though, despite the fact he's borderline evil and should be despised. I love his character, it's great.

EDIT: Also I believe that yes, Snape was not as much of a dick in the movies.

I'm pretty sure that less than half the people who saw the movies read the books so...

Magical oaths; I fucking hate them. Probably one of the worst plotbreaking concepts to come out of fanfic bar marriage-law fics and foe-yay.

Judge - "Sirius Black, are you a Deatheater?"
Sirius - "I swear on my life and magic that I have never been a Deatheater of follower of Lord Voldemort, so mote it be."
Judge - "Oh, well - Case dismissed!"

    or

Voldemort - "So you have raped, tortured and murdered a family of muggles, Severus? Yes, you have earned your dark mark doing so - but, now you have to swear loyalty to me."
Snape - "I swear on my life and magic I shall never betray my lord and master, Lord Voldemort, so mote it be."
    A couple of years later...
Dumbledore - "If you loved Lily Evans, if you truly loved her, then your way forward is clear. You know how and why she died. Make sure it was not in vain. Help me protect Lily's son."
    Snape - "Very well... ugh!"
Dumbledore - "I honestly wasn't expecting that to kill me new spy..."

It's a massive plot breaker. Unbreakable Vows don't seem to be too bad; in my mind, because it involves two people, if you break the vow both people die so people are very hesitant to make them. No way a Deatheater would risk their lives on the loyalty of another Deatheater.

No they don't? Only the person swearing the vow dies.

Either way, if you do decided only one dies you've suddenly got a plot breaker. If Unbreakable Vows are as amazing as that Voldemort would have used them to ensure loyalty, the Ministry would have used them to ensure loyalty, people would use them as a fool-proof way of proving innocence, etc.

I can't say anything about Pottermore but I don't think they ever said in the books only one half of the Unbreakable Vow dies.

    ---------- Post automerged at 01:37 ---------- Previous post was at 01:36 ----------

If both die you suddenly have a good reason for why they're not very common. Few people would risk their lives like that; Narcissa only did because she loves her little Deatheater son.

There are a lot of plot-breaking concepts in HP; unbreakable vows are only one of them.

If oaths were used to prove innocence it would probably go something like this:

D.E. to other D.E.: Crap, I'm on trial for the murder on x, can you Obliviate those memories?

D.E. at trial: I swear on my magic and life that I have no knowledge of having killed x.

Jury: Alright, you're free to go.

Same reasons why Pensieves aren't used either.

I think people often underestimate the role of cultural values in explaining why these things aren't used.

After all, in our Muggle society there are plenty of measures you could take to reduce crime, if you're willing to shit all over people's rights. Installing surveillance in people's homes, for example.

We don't do that; wizards don't force oaths on people that could kill them.

Not sure if this was posted a few pages back? But authors changing Harry's name because they think it's cool pisses me off and makes me close the story instantly. Was starting to read something I had started to read and given up on before, BECAUSE I WASN'T SURE WHY I stopped.

10 minutes later, "My name is Hadrian", what the FUCK. I really need to start writing down stories that I simply shouldn't ever reopen somewhere.
