So ... we see what Sai could have become if he'd read all the wrong sort of books.

    Funniest chapter in awhile.

That Luffy, Law, Kyros and Cavendish scene was just pure gold.

Been a month since this was updated, but the latest chapter merits it.

The boss rush is nearly finished- everyone present has done their required awesomeness to demonstrate their latest character development.

Law and Luffy have reached Dofy, and the chapter even left off with the start of his badass boast.

The end of this arc is near, and its finally Luffy's turn to fight.

    Fuck. Yeah.

And Usopp has had more character development then 99% of Bleach characters, and more then pretty much anyone in Naruto that doesn't have a Sharingan/Rinnegan/Reincarnation power.

That's the best part of One Piece, how every character still MATTERS and still does stuff, even this far into the game. Fuck, Franky is having a dance off right now with a dude dressed as a giant baby, Robin is holding off a threat (literally), and Zoro is having fun fighting the giant stone dude.

One Piece is kinda like the Anti-DBZ, really. Goku isn't going around having to win every fight- Everyone is matched up with an appropriate opponent, everyone is forced into character development, and everyone fights.

Well, I finally caught up to the end of the anime and am about to read the manga starting where it leaves off (originally read the manga, but only up through Sanji joining the crew).

I'll probably read the entire manga at some point when I get bored and am traveling or something, so... what's the best translation, do you think? I know there's tons of sites that translate the "popular" series like this, and quality often varies. I'm not interested in the one that gets new chapters out the quickest (yet). I want the one that does the best job with nuances in speech, etc.

    Suggestions?

First you can go the legal route and subscribe to WSJ. The lead translator for One piece there is a guy called Steven whose really good.

Mangarule was the best(but its dead) so now you go to http://powermanga.org/(Translated by same guy who translated for Mangarule).

Mangastream are not good translators. They fuck up a lot of lines for something more hip and cool.

To be honest, I'm only aware of mangapanda and mangastream's translations for the big three. Mangapanda's more accurate but usualyl sounds awkward while mangastream plays with the dialogue but is easier to understand and sounds more natural (and has better scans). I presumed that's what she might have meant by "nuances of speech".

Powermanga is 10 chapters behind and take ages to update, but I would recommend them for material they have out now. It's between Panda or Stream for quicker updates.

Thanks guys! I'll check out a few of those in terms of quality.

What I meant by "nuances of speech" isn't readability so much as accuracy in terms of... okay, for example. There is one anime sub group that I hated a while back, because instead of translating creative insults it would default to 'idiot' for everything. Sanji calling Zoro "moss head" or Zoro calling Sanji whatever, or someone calling one of them a brat/kid... all of those would get translated as "idiot."

Yes, in terms of moving the story along, you don't lose /too/ much in a sense. The point of the insult is that one was offered. But I always felt like a lot quality was lost not knowing what the insults in question actually were.

I read a few manga chapters here and there while watching the anime (there were a few eps I could only find via that shit translator) and noticed that some of the manga translations would have very different 'feels' to them while reading.

Another example I can think of is that scene in the Water7 Arc when Sanji went ahead early while the rest of the Straw Hats were on the following train - one translation gave the impression that Zoro was worried about Sanji (while pretending not to be) and the other one made out like he wasn't worried at all and was only embarrassed that someone thought he was. That's what I'd consider a nuance - I want read something that comes across as what the author intended.

Some translations also lose the -san, -kun, -chan, -whatever suffixes, and I feel that nuances are lost there (however stupid their usage might be compared to realistic uses). Some also translate a lot of different words as "friends" despite nuances there.

...I admit I don't read tons of Manga or watch tons of Anime compared to some, so it's possible I could be wrong in my impressions of the above. But I have been watching/reading for about 12 years off and on, and it just seems like something that comes up a lot. Fortunately for the really popular series like One Piece one often has some choice in which translation they read.

    Edit:
WSJ? Subscribe? Not sure what WSJ is. Will check out Powermanga and see if I can find some of the old mangarule translations somewhere as well.

Edit2: On another note, is yibis pretty much the only active fansub atm for the anime?

Ah, thanks. Didn't realize there were any official translations that were both (1) decent without over-censoring and (2) remotely caught up.

Wait, isn't the anime like not that far behind the chapters? I just looked it up and it looks like its right before the coliseum fights start.

I dunno how faithful to the manga the anime is... Was everything from Impel Down to the time skip accurate? Cuz that shit was pretty much teh greatest story arc I've ever read in a story.

Yes the anime and manga are pretty close in terms of where they're at in the story if you're looking at fansubs. But afaik the 'official' english dubs that will show up on networks in the US is pretty far behind, but I don't care about those as I have no desire to watch them.

HorribleSubs rips One Piece right from CrunchyRoll which might be what you're looking for. Official as you get without waiting for dubs (and for free.)

Beware of Warez talk, folks will get in trouble. Probably better to take it private if you're gonna go to that point.
