    "Harry becomes a girl!"

Dropped at the speed of light.

Writers always make Harry a wimpy bitch in some fics, might as well turn him a girl. Oh wait, they actually do. Bonus point if he/she get all wet when Draco appears in scene.

Better he turns into a girl than he begins an incestuous relationship with a hitherto unknown sibling. I've seen that crop up from time to time.

I personally skip the stories where he's a girl. Kills the character for me.

There are a couple good gender bending fics. Not many though.

    I love Jeram's story, but it's a subversion, so I don't think it counts.

Insecure female characters that are normal/beautiful/jaw-dropping gorgeous that 'can't seem themselves as beautiful' and need the male lead to tell them that, and etc.

Two reasons I really hate that, first I hate insecure characters unless their specific arc is about beating that lack of confidence by drawing strength from within and it's a real insecurity with basis on reality, and not some bullshit thing. Second, it reeks of bad writing, just like bashing is made by dumb, lazy and incopetent writers to characters they don't like, this kind of writing is made by the same type of writer that can't write romance and thus we get this lazyness.

Oh, and as the cherry top, they do that to Harry too, because again, chickfication and shitty writing.

That. A Fleur that needs to constantly be told she's beautiful is not only OOC, it's plain irritating.

I consider it rather odd how often Fleur tends to be portrayed as some damsel in distress, and Harry is the one that proves to her that she's not alone, that he knows how she feels, yadda yadda yadda... you get the gist.

I just wish there were more fics where she was confident and competent, where she was a fucking sexual predator (not in the pedophile sense of the word) and not this girl who shied away from all people for fear of 'enthralling' them with her Veela allure, or whatever the author decides to call it, and them subsequently molesting her.

So far, only fic that does what I'd like to see done with Fleur's character is Sesc's fic, here on DLP.

If you want to see it, make it yourself. Just because I'd like to see it myself, I'll give you some help:

Fleur notices (with no small amount of disgust) that Harry Potter's friend, Ron, has been spying on her. While typically she would ignore him or emasculate him so badly that he never speaks to her again, she knows that she's in last place after the first task, has not yet solved the riddle of the egg, and could be condemned to finishing below the youngest Triwizard tournament competitor of all time. Thus, Fleur comes to the realization that using Ron to get closer to Harry (who is notably wary of others and does not trust the Veela allure) is actually one of the best moves she can make.

So, when Ron asks her out, she casually accepts his invitation. Unable to believe it, the entire contigent of fourth year Gryffindors are flabbergasted. Hermione complains loudly about Fleur's intentions (starting a huge row with Ron) and, in order to avoid being totally hypocritical, she turns down Krum's invitation, convinced that he is also trying to get close to Harry.

Harry still has a crush on Cho, so when she turns him down, he ends up asking Hermione (in a nice way) and they decide to go together. This creates a distance between Harry and Ron, but Fleur reminds her date that her friends are just going together so that they don't have to be alone (and he accepts that, deciding to be nice to his date and his friends this time around). Harry is suspicious of Fleur (and Hermione doubly so) but nothing of worth is divulged until Cedric tells of the egg and, subsequently, Harry tells Fleur.

Fleur's performance improves in the second task, but of course she drops Ron like a bad habit. Hermione "tells him so" and then they aren't speaking. Fleur sees Harry spending more time alone and decides to now use HIM to her advantage.

What keeps interest in the story is the fact that, while large portions of it are written from Fleur's perspective, no one is sure if she'll continue to use Harry or if she'll come around to actually loving him. Entirely up to you if you wanna write it, Od.

Or anyone else for that matter.

To me this comes off as a REALLY bad case of writer projection to be honest. It reads terribly and just adds to word count, it's so boring and irritating to get through.

I've never come across this particular one before? I mean I've seen a lot of stuff you could complain about with fanon Fleur, but I've never seen her think she's anything less than beautiful.

I have seen this, but never where she was paired with Harry. It's pretty awesome when done right, if shallow, which is ok because she never hits even the level of supporting character.

If she was to be paired with Harry you'd need to write her character extremely well to make it work, otherwise she'd just be annoying.

I wish there was more well written Harry/Fleur, Wastelands and Lie I've Lived set my expectations too high and now I will never be satisfied. Some of it's ok.

Pet peeve: Veelas fall in love with people who can resist their attraction magic and are often encouraged by their family to do so. Not to get a feeling of conquest or to get them out of the wizard gene pool or even some invented bullshit like it strengthening their offspring's attraction magic but because they are somehow better people than those who can't.

Of course, those who actually can do that in those fics are either Sirius (because of course, he is too awesome to fall in love with anything short of a veela so that they can have half veela children that will never say anything in the whole fic. I think I even saw one in which it was a Japanese veela too so that she went full geisha and had a katana), James (because it is not cool to drool for your best mate's wife with yours standing next to you!) and Harry even though he fell for it on the quidditch final.

Seriously, if it were that the veela encourage their offspring to marry wizards that can resist their attraction because it is true love, one would think that either there are no pure veelas or that their males are chopped liver. At least give a reason like being helpful to integrate their race to society if it looks they can live together or to get benefits like wands or to get out of reserves where they are forced to stay or whatever.

This I see most in fics in which Harry's parents survive. Either Sirius is the single crazy uncle that practically lives on their house or he is married to a Veela or he made it his life goal to make sure Remus has a job, etc.

Another pet peeve, using menace of hexing/cursing to solve arguments. Most culprits are female, probably a legacy of some shonen mangas. While it might have its place in comedy works, if you are trying to portray something based in modern society (like Harry Potter) it is not quite good. If you really feel like it should be normal, at least introduce some cultural shock from the muggleborn and don't make Hermione, who should be arguing about following the rules and the like, the main instigator.

For Veelas to fall in love with people who resist their magical charms makes sense to me. How would you build a relationship, when the other person constantly looks up to you like a dog waiting for its treat? Of course, that doesn't mean that Veelas should instantly fall for the first person the resist that charm, it rather should make them more attractive and noticable.

Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it, that whole Veela charm turning people into drooling dogs would be a nice setting for some kinky stuff. Too bad Veelas are little more than sex slaves.

Agree with this. I think it's more a case of writers failing than the idea being bad.

That might be true for humans, but there is no reason to have that apply to Veelas equally.
Maybe men that are affected by their abilities are the only ones they can really trust. The subservient ones are the ones they can completely dominate and they are into that. Someone not affected would be regarded with suspicion.
