While not specifically about Harry, there are books in which he is featured. According to Hermione at least.

OTOH, It's not so far-fetched that there would be books specifically about Harry, though they'd probably be widely incorrect.

I recall Hermione saying that Harry was in something something wizards of 20th century, that's not fanon as well, right?

EDIT: Ninja'd. Close enough I guess.

Harry being in books is not a fanon invention. A series of books dictating his adventures during the early years of his life, slaying dragons etc, is. Not to say that such a series of books is unlikely to be written, it'd probably make money so I'd actually be shocked if something like that was NOT created. But it's still not canon.

History books and magic theory. Certainly no adventure books.

I need a citation. The more I think about it the less convinced I am that I actually read that in the books and not a fanfic.

Negligentia by Murkatroyd is a decent one shot sitting at around 19,000 words. It's an attempt at doing a twin fic right. Instead of making us read about how Harry's life sucks because his parents pay more attention to his twin the story takes place 6-7 years after graduation. Harry is an adult who is happy with his life and career. The story is told through a conversation and a series of flashbacks.

I don't understand your post. Did you read my post incorrectly? I don't know what you're talking about when you said "I actually read that in the books and not a fanfic".

Do you have any idea what a citation is? Cite where Harry being in a fantasy book was mentioned

If I remember correctly, when Hermione first barges into Harry and Ron's compartment in PS, she says she read about Harry in Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts and some other book. that much is canon. The books about Harry where he supposedly rescues princesses and slays dragons (that Ginny and other wizarding kids presumably grew up reading) are fanon.

It is one of the the two commandments every DLPer must follow- Thou must avoid slash in any shape or form and Thou must bash Ginny in any and every way possible. I don't really mind the first rule as reading graphic slash disgusts me. The second rule is based on some sort of warped theory that somehow involves Ginny simultaneously being a perfect mary sue and a good-for-nothing whore.

It is shame that many quality fanfics have been neglected because they HG. There are tonnes of fanfics that are in the library just because they ship Harry/random-cool-girl about whom nothing is known in canon, and wouldn't have even got a second look were they HG instead.

That's... rather bland. I mean, nothing really noteworthy happens in it. Nothing which would make me glad I spent some small amount of my time reading it.

Yeah, it does feel as if it's missing a little something, but I liked it because it showed the afterwards which twin fics never reach. Usually they end in 4th year. The author says in their profile that they are working on a series of one shots set within that universe so maybe that'll fill in the gaps.

I'm pretty sure he just misread your post. I honestly did the same the first time.

Edit: Wtf, get back on topic.

In other words, we discovered that if you take away the abuse and stupid drama from the WBWL-stories, what remains is ... nothing?

And Stan, by all means if you know "tonnes" of H/G stories that are library-worthy, post them. I'd be interested -- the usual problem wasn't actually the H/G, but the craptastic and/or boring characterisations (slap & kiss, do I need to say more?)

You guys really need to learn that fanfiction IS canon. Anything that's plausibly used within fanon can and, in most cases, SHOULD be used again. It's totally reasonable to assume that children's books were made about Harry because there are books meant for students that have Harry in them. I would imagine they would even be so widely popular that poor wizards like the Weasleys would have the entire set.

Now, if a writer had the intention to make Ginny an actual character, they would have her crush on Harry slowly melt into misery, as she realizes that she has no hope getting his attention when she's acting like a fan rather than herself. Oh, and more importantly, she realizes that she'll never get ANYONE'S attention acting that way. The Chamber of Secrets scenario should push her "fangirlism" into genuine respect for him. Then, she should try actually being his friend. Once the crush has faded into friendship with a hint of attraction, and she develops actual female body parts, which Harry recognizes, she should try to make him jealous by fucking around with the only ethnically-different male in Gryffindor, leading to Harry worrying about a decently attractive girl rather than the world he's trying to save.

Of course, the author would have to have him leave Hogwarts at the very moment that they could have properly fleshed out Ginny's character, resulting in every Harry Potter FANBOY griping about something that wasn't at all the character (BUT THE AUTHOR'S) fault.

    OH WAIT.

In reality, Ginny is amazing. We just get brief glimpses of her, but what does she do wrong, other than snogging Dean Thomas and giving in to Tom Riddle at 11 years old. In canon, she could have been mentioned in a footnote. Literally, we feel no emotion for her.

Ι liked this. Well, not so much like, as nothing substantial happened, but it kept my interest throughout, did not feel like a waste of time at the end, and was well written. Nice find.

Only the books are canon, nothing more (did you forget, what canon even means??).
Based on what? Pure speculation, nothing more.

I did post "Polyjuice, Memory Charms and more" by Deadwoodpecker a few pages back, but other than one reply of it being HG hence obviously unreadable, it gathered no attention. I still maintain it is a library worthy fic, for whatever that's worth.

The author has a few other good HG fics as well : Yellow Submarine and Socks being the most popular (besides Backwards with a Purpose of course). I think Yellow submarine has been mentioned a couple of times before. Socks is short, but very good for what it is - an AU in which Dumbledore was killed early and the DEs take over a lot sooner. Moody goes all 'constant vigilance' on the surviving order, to the point where the order members don't even know their own teammate's identity. I could expand on the HG, but that might give away too much. It is pretty good, but there isn't too much of it.

I do recall a couple more good HG fics, but no point posting all of them at once. :) What I meant before was that most good HG fics make the library in spite of them being HG, not because they were HG. I believe The Phoenix and the Serpent by Sanction to be one of the all time great fanfics, but has largely been neglected by the community (It has barely 20 votes and is hardly ever discussed), presumably because it is HG.

Ah, but this wasn't even a WBWL story, since Harry's brother, Jacob, was the actual BWL. And neglect is a form of abuse, albeit with less physical consequences than the more common kinds you can happen across.

Harry saying he still loved his family just feels dishonest. Apathetic, even. Yeah, I love the sun. Because it still hasn't burned me to death when I step into its rays.

And to be quite honest, Harry being friendly with Draco Malfoy just irks the shit out of me.

:facepalm He was being facetious to highlight that JKR made Ginny a horrible, forgettable character.

As for HP/GW fics, someone recently mentioned The Amplitude, Frequency and Resistance of the Soul Bond, and it's actually enjoyable despite the major red flag right in the title. It really is a soul bond done right. I haven't had time to finish it, though.
