And as for Ginny being a "Fangirl." She's ten when she meets the hero of the wizarding world, and eleven when he shows up in her house. What the hell else does anyone expect her to do, treat him like "just one of the girls?"

I've been following this for a while, since it was first posted on Ao3. It has Merlin replacing Harry, an OC adopted little brother for Merlin and sort-of-but-not-quiet-memory-impaired-Merlin, but despite all these terrible sounding things, it's a pretty good read, especially for Merlin fandom which is rife with slash and angst.

Now I admit, Merlin does angst a fair bit in this too, but I think that's just how the Merlin fans roll.

Other than that, despite following the HP canon (Quirrelmort is the villain in the first book) it does a good job of being fairly original.

Also, Snape. He's an ass, but he still takes a liking to Merlin, who somehow compares Snape to Gaius, before eventually deciding that they're completely different people. So that's a +1 -1 = 0 thing, I s'pose.

Overall, if you like Merlin and the HP universe, it's worth a read.

 

Well it is the Harry Potter Universe, only Merlin replaces Harry, but the students, teachers etc. are all from Harry Potter. And it's not like Merlin's existence is a completely foreign concept in Harry Potter. JKR included him as a historical figure.
In my opinion you can read it without knowing anything about Merlin. So I didn't think the 'other fandom' thing applied here.

I pretty much agree with The DarIm. It doesn't sound too good when you list the facts, but it turns out to be an enjoyable read.

Hardly anyone touches the proper thread for it.

 

That's why it exists. So you can go and put the AR fics there, and not here, the Harry Potter part of the subforum.

If you're not getting enough attention, could be people just aren't all that interested in it.

 

Half the time I never bother checking the Other Fandoms AR thread because like 70% of the fics there are just Naruto fics (which I have no interest in), with a lot of the other recs being other anime. I feel like a separate thread for Naruto fics like there is for ASoIaF and Mass Effect etc. might be helpful.

 

I can agree with that. I'm not ashamed to say I danced when I found out Naruto was finally gone.

A decent fic, found it while browsing, it gets somewhat strange in the later chapters but any possible confusion is cleared up.

Err, what? Of course Naruto fics are gonna take up a lot of the thread, it's one of the biggest fandoms there is. Anime takes up a lot too, because they seem to have larger fandoms than book series tend to.

It's still worth checking out Other Fandom AR, because it DOES get reccs from fandoms like DC or Supernatural or something.

My point exactly. I'm not questioning why there are so many Naruto recs - I get that it's one of the bigger fandoms and lot's of DLPers like it, which is fine - just saying that maybe because it has so many people recommending stories for it that it should have it's own thread (again, as other large fandoms have had their own in the past). As it is Naruto fics dwarf all the other recs in that thread.

 

That wouldn't really work, because we have the 'Quality Naruto fics' thread. granted, that thread is not really for 'Barely-Recommended' but it would overcomplicate things to have two threads with very confusable purposes, I feel.

 

I do. If it's a crossover with HP, feel free to post it here; if it doesn't have HP in it at all, then post it there. I have no interest in wading through the latest twenty-odd Naruto Peggy Sue fics just to get to a HP rec.

To get back to the thread topic:

Kokopelli (of FFA writers fame) has started a new Harry/Daphne fic. He says it'll be about 60k words. Not enough to rate, but he has the first five or so chapters written:

Summary: Magic is all about intent, but sometimes ritual carries its own message. After Voldemort's killing curse rebounds on him, Harry picks up Voldemort's yew and phoenix feather wand - and ends up inheriting everything Tom Riddle owns, by right of conquest. Canon compliant - AU to epilogue

The premise is that Daphne was bethrothed to Tom Riddle for some contrived reasons. Harry's canon defeat of Voldemort leads to his acquiring her betrothal somehow. Dunno if it'll turn out decent or meh, but as I've enjoyed work by this author in the past, I thought I'd put it on folks' radar.

Pros: The writing is competent at this point, albeit nothing remarkable after ~9k words. The writer tends to finish his stories, so it probably won't be abandoned.

Cons: Clichés. And Harry/Daphne, which is getting as annoying as Harry/Ginny used to be. Also, a pretty illogical plot premise that seems a variant of the marriage law/forced marriage thing that used to litter the fandom back in the day. (If someone can force a marriage against the other party's will simply by offing her intended and picking up the guy's wand, then one would imagine we'd have seen a whole lot more of that.)

Almost recommended at this point.

 

Just change 'Quality Naruto fics' to 'Naruto fics' and keep them all in one place? Seems simpler to me.

But whatever, it's not a huge problem and I should reallly stop posting about non-almost recommended stuff in this thread...

Edit: In regards to Pers' rec - it's all right, but most of is pretty contrived and cliche like you said. I might have been able to ignore that (God knows I've read worse) but for some reason Daphne is going by the name Queenie. Definitely no way I'm reading a story where one of the main characters is named Queenie.

 

My sense is that the author is lampshading the trope.

 

I though they were just using Daphne's supposed original name.

 

While I could see the goblins making good lawyers I can't see wizards letting a goblin defend them in court.
