Why wouldn't they have done that in book 6 then? Were the aurors (which were unable to help Amelia Bones or anyone else targeted by the Death Eaters during book 6) or the marked for death Dumbledore that much of a threat? After all, the Death Eaters entered with the clear goal of killing Dumbledore, so Voldemort couldn't have feared him that much.

I assume those attacks were surprise attacks. Whereas an attack on Hogwarts would prompt the entire bloody Auror corps and probably any Hit-wizard they could get to be rallied and brought to Hogwarts.

By the time Voldemort attacked, the ministry was under his control and the aurors out of the way.

I believe it was a surprise attack to cause as much collateral damage as possible to spread terror. That's why Greyback was there. Killing Dumbledore would have been the ultimate bonus point.

I kinda love it for the dark potential. Like, they'd have to be pretty damn good to do that, but I imagine the teachers would play a part in the end, as in canon. McGonagall and Flitwick have been waiting for their moment. But another factor is that Luna was taken on Christmas and Ginny on Easter, and Neville only started living in the Room of Requirement and found the passage to Aberforth's around the same time. So if it's the three of them together, it's before all that, so then it's before they have an exit for the other students.

So hypothetically this is how it could go: Snape and Carrows are gone, but they have Death Eater kids in the population. Not only that, but if they don't kill Snape or the Carrows on the way out, or even if just an owl gets out, then the Ministry learns what happened. Ministry's under Death Eater's control, so Voldemort knows. All of Voldemort's best know soon after. Every possible exit is sealed from the outside. All the secret passages were gotten to already. No Room exit yet. Floo locked down, broom fliers will be pursued, can't Apparate, no one there knows how to make Portkeys and they'd be tracked anyway. So within hours, they know they're trapped.

Students with the Mark they know about are subdued first. Separated, put in a makeshift cell. Timing of the overthrow is also important. If it was planned or not might've influenced the time. If this happens late at night, then I imagine they'd have the night to plan and pretend all's fine in the morning, with Polyjuiced doubles of Snape and the Carrows at the ready if possible. Ahh, but what if Slughorn or Snape don't have Polyjuice on hand, nor any of the Order's able to get to it! Things happen in the middle of the day, then it's chaos. No one's in their dorms, spread out, unaccounted for.

Either way, semblance of order wouldn't last long. They'd block Owl Post in and out first. Weird how we're not getting the owls this morning, isn't it? No Prophet, no nothing. Maybe a fake story about a Ministry attack by Harry Potter or something. Or hell, maybe there's no need to fake anything or do body doubles and pretend it's fine. McGonagall and Neville could declare their victory in their own names, to make sure that if the result falls against them, only they are punished. But still. Death Eaters's kids might have other ways to communicate. And if there's Marked students that aren't already caught - and there would be secret ones, for sure - they could communicate with the Mark too.

So what we've got now is what could be spun as a hostage situation. Castle's on lockdown. Voldemort's people can attack after an effort of Ministry resources to dismantle protections and whatnot. But there are Ministry workers who have kids in there too, that might reason that their kids will be taken out or whatever. Not only that, but people become hopeful that the Carrows and Snape being driven out means it's all coming to an end. Hell, the Ministry's own little rebels could step up too. Imagine that chaos. Ministry starts in-fighting and the Death Eaters try and stop that mess, lose some of their people to the hardcore fighters, waste more time and lose resources. Hogwarts is left for a moment to breathe.

Inside, things aren't that great. They've got food. Who knows if there's a limit, though. Who knows if Voldemort's people know where the house elves go to get their food, and they lie in wait to attack or prevent them. They lose the house elves they're really fucked, though since the wizards at large don't weaponise them or anything like that all that often, maybe no one would realise how fucked they are. Anyways, things suck inside because everyone gets incredibly dejected. The brief elation of losing the Carrows and Snape is replaced with goddamn pants-wetting fear. They were scared of the past regime, but now fear worse for what's going to happen next. Kids to go to sleep with nightmares of Voldemort slaughtering them all in their head.

And hell, if he's alerted, Voldemort himself is PISSED. This is his fucking Hogwarts. It's being held by a Longbottom leading the students and McGongall leading the teachers. No backup, no nothing. He's putting off his quest for the Elder Wand's thief for THIS shit? Voldemort would definitely, if mad enough, go and kill Augusta Longbottom and a bunch of others, then parade their corpses in a ring above the castle gates to prove a point. If there's a physical shield around Hogwarts he would blot out the sun with corpses if he wanted.

And again, things inside are disgusting when the whispers start. People want to break open one of the secret passages and get out. Neville's got the DA on them. But the DA are only so many, and they get scared too. Zacharias Smith and his ilk. The cowards. And maybe they don't use themselves to get the passages out. Maybe they go unlock the locked up Death Eaters and let them go. Hell, not even them do that; there's got to be sympathisers or people scared enough. And fuck, tensions are high. Kid soldiers in the halls. Somebody's going to die in that mess. Someone guarding the prisoners. Someone trying to get them. Anyone.

One death and it snowballs. Fights in the halls. Maybe anti-DA people rally. Maybe they lie in wait. Maybe the sneakier ones join the DA's new reserve of emergency fighters. And better yet, there's got to be teachers in the pack too. They're not teaching at the moment, and most aren't Order or so loyal to Dumbledore's corpse that they'd risk their lives. Collaborators in an occupation are common as dicks. And if it's early enough in the occupation - we'll say November or so - then things haven't gotten so bad yet. Yes there's Muggleborns being rounded up, but the torture hasn't gone all out in Hogwarts and Snatcher gangs are only vaguely new entities. Harry Potter's been silent for months; he's not going to come and save the day.

And that's the real trick. If Harry, Ron and Hermione are camping and don't go to get and a newspaper for a few days - they went every week or so under the Cloak - they don't hear about it. If they DO, then remember that if it's say November as previously guessed, then there's a problem. The locket. Maybe it's already got Ron. Fuck man, if Ron's in hiding with Bill by now and he hears, then he'll want to help Bill and the Order move. But if he's with Harry and Hermione and Phineas's portrait confirms shit is bad, then he'll want to go. Moody and sullen and all. But they haven't destroyed any Horcruxes, so do they want to risk getting into what might be the final battle?

That's a lot of interesting angles. And things would snowball. Maybe Voldemort forces Neville and McGonagall et al to decide if they want to actually use the students they have as hostages. And then execute a hostage. Maybe it's an asshole collaborator whose parents are dead anyway, that kinda thing. Maybe it's one of the Death Eaters they got - if they have any - that's a real asshole or something. Maybe there's someone fatally injured by a curse already and agrees to be sacrificed. And christ, what if it's Neville who does it and this is his first kill. What would that do to him, killing someone outside a battle like that.

And what would that do the castle? The situation forced, escalated, made ugly. More rebellions. More restrictions. An element made up of collaborators, Marked, and maybe one or two playing both sides would make a push. For the secret passages. They fight for it. They get it. It's sealed behind them. More people lost, more dead. In the public eye - if there is one, if the Ministry exploded, if if if - people inside are now out and recounting their tale. Playing it up. Adding horrors. Snape and the Carrows sit on the sidelines, waiting.

Shit man, consider Snape. Dude's got his mission to try and save as many as he can, but his hand's been forced. Maybe it was him who allowed the DA to win because he didn't try lethal force. Could've killed one and saved hundreds to come. If Snape knows where Harry is - how did Dumbledore know where to send him and the Sword Of Gryffindor, again? - maybe that's the way Harry comes back into the story. Send the doe Patronus. Hope for the best.

Those are the elements here. Throw in more distrust with those inside and out, more anger, more everything. Eventually it ends in the castle being stormed. More death. Maybe it's the endgame when Harry rocks up. Maybe it's a delay and the castle is kept when those other reinforcements show up. Maybe it becomes the entire good side trapped in the castle. Voldemort would attack the shit out of it over and over. Secret passages defended and attacked. The Room Of Requirement finally put to use somewhere in there. Maybe just maybe the castle itself is destroyed under the weight of it all.

Basically, it ends badly. But it takes an interesting way to get there. And when the smoke clears years later and Harry's won or something, he'll return to the site of all the blood lost and look at some names on a memorial. Neville. Ginny (pang of his heart there). Luna. McGonagall. Anyone. Everyone. Who knows.

Take that, throw in multiple POV structure, very character-based arcs for those both in and outside, use a lot of cabin fever mental degradation techniques or even just the standard "we're going to die" reactions (Suicides, emotional reveals, et cetera), get technical and almost spy movie-esque in places as people use sabotage and subterfuge, and then keep a relentless pace of darker and darker escalation from both sides. Sounds good. Who wants to write it?

I've got an idea for an X-men crossover.

During the summer after second year, Dudley develops a visible mutation. His parents are horrified. They manage to stall Marge's visit and prevent Dudley from going outside, but they know the ugly truth will come out soon. The shame will be unbearable

They see only one solution. Kill both the freaks and then commit suicide. Their attempt is stopped by Dudley's mutant power and Sirius's intervention. The adult Dursleys flee and die in an intentional collision with a lorry.

Xavier arrives at this point and is able to verify that Sirius is telling the truth about being innocent. Pettigrew will be captured as soon as the Weasleys return from Egypt and Sirius cleared.

Dumbledore attempts to transfer the blood protections to Dudley but can find no trace of them. He suspects that they collapsed years ago and that the related instrument in his office was malfunctioning.

Harry and Dudley will continue to correspond. After Voldemort's resurrection, Snape or one of the junior Deatheaters will discover the address of Xaviers school and give the information to his master. Voldemort decides that a muggle school will be an easy target. He regrets this decision.

Dudley will have a very difficult transition. His experiences with his parents may force him to conclude that Xavier's plan of coexistence is hopeless, and Magneto is the only hope for mutants to survive.

Great idea, Orpheus. Though won't they first blame magic, thinking it was the fault of a spell like Hagrid giving him a pigtail? Might need visible powers too.

And if he learns from Sirius or Harry how Death Eaters got away with everything after the First War thanks to the government's corruption and Dumbledore's inaction, he'll be even more eager to join Magneto.

To be fair a number of the X-Men and other heroes would be quite eager to stomp Wizarding Britain flat after they meet the typical wizard authorities and learn of their views and laws concerning non-magical people. Wizarding Britain is not exactly a "good" country according to the standards of the Marvel Universe.

But probably they'd work with them to eliminate a common foe, Voldemort and would be at each-other's throats the second Voldemort is dead (just like in RL the Cold War more or less started the second Hitler ventilated his head with a pistol)?

I am not sure there's much need to work with the "light idiots" or the "corrupt idiots", other than to tell them to move out of the way while the guys who save the planet every week clean up their "Dark Lord" problem. Compared to Marvel's usual threats, Voldemort is a really minor issue. Unless the story focuses on the relationship and character growth between Harry and Dudley, a heavy nerfing of the Marvel Universe might be needed if Voldemort is supposed to be a concern.

Except Voldemort has horcuxes which cannot be destroyed by anything but magic
And the fact that Voldemort would annihilate the x-men because he has magic

Considering that X-Men universe spawned the characters like Scarlet Witch (famous for rewriting the universe with her 'NO MORE MUTANTS') or Magik (who survived in Limbo and forgot more about Dark magic than Voldy ever learned), Voldemort is really a minor threat.

Perhaps, it would be better if Dudley developed the mutation at school and got sent home. The Dursleys demand that Harry fix it when he returns from school.

He owls McGonagall. She and Poppy look at Dudley. They don't know anything about mutations, but they recognize that Dudley's condition wasn't caused by magic and can't be fixed by magic either. After they leave, Vernon and Petunia decide to eliminate both freaks living under their roof.

---------- Post automerged at 07:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:10 AM ----------

Dudley will certain learn about the Death Eater pardons after Xavier scans one of the respectable citizens who was captured trying to attack the mutant school.

Vernon and Petunia will never kill their beloved son. And why should they believe anything a magical person has to say, they might be denying their involvement. I can see them locking Dudley up in a room to spare him the pain of being ostracized and themselves the embarrassment. Xavier can sense Dudley's distress and through him they will know of Harry's abilities. Obviously they can't let such a potential threat fall into the hands of Magneto.

If he became a mutant, he's likely to be downgraded in their eyes from beloved son to a traitor to every normal value of that they hold dear.
