I kind of liked this topic as a way to test the waters with fics, especially longer ones you haven't finished reading yet. It's also a lot easier to throw up a cute fic you just ran into without having to go through the whole template business.

I can see the former point, but the latter is the reason these threads got so bloated. Because of that I originally suggested to close this thread entirely and to not allow its recreation.

Filling the template is a process that takes no longer than a minute, perhaps two. If you look at the first post of this thread, you might notice that even within this thread you are asked to use the same template. And that's a rule since thread no. III: https://forums.darklordpotter.net/showpost.php?p=388477&postcount=1

If I get the impression that people still use this thread just out of laziness, I might start to enforce that rule.

The only hated pairings are slash pairings - and that's based on DLP's demographics. Snape/anything is a problem, as well as Sever(it)us (which once actually had their own subforum in the library), and any non-Harry centric stories.

I actually don't hate Snape's guts, his canon character was actually really good. He was so slimey.

Well, this story of esama's was just recommended over on SB and I like it so far, but I've never been well at judging things so here it where I'll put it.

    Title: Island of Fire
    Author: esama
    Pairing: N/A
Rating: Teen and Up (PG-13 I suppose)
    Link: AO3

Summary: The founding of a wizarding nation in a world of dragons.

It was recommended as an ISOT-ish type of story, but in this story it's just the group that get's transported afaict.

I like it well enough, it's written in a manner that's supposed to emulate journal entries I think, but most seem to blend together imo. Definitely more tell than show though and I feel that might turn most people off.

    I give it a 3/5 for now.

TBH I think you're just going to scare a lot of people off from posting, like some % will just submit to the review board but another significant % will just read whatever fic themselves and not go through the hassle.

It might not be a lot of work but this thread served as a nice easy way to share a fic quickly without thinking much about it and IMO it would be a shame to lose that. Even at it's most active, the review board never received nearly as many submissions as here.

Definitely leans more towards 'tell' than 'show', but I feel it works for the way it's being set up, and the timespan I expect it to cover. I'd give it a 3/5 for now as well, but it could go up depending on where it goes.

Yeah, apparently it's an epistolary type of story. I'd never heard of it before today but it seems telling is how they're done.

I quiet like it. Looking forward to more. Reads akin to the HP/Dragonriders of Pern crossover on FF.net. But I like the political implications and of course how this Atlantis sank.

Okay, I swear I'm not being intentionally dense, but with the change to Almost Recommended, I feel like I no longer have a handle on the process fics go through on DLP. Is there one post that codifies the whole process?

I feel like I need a flow chart or something.

This is how I understand it, holistically:

Based on its quality and alignment with DLP's tastes, a new fanfic enters the pool in one of three places:

    - A post in the Almost Recommended thread, where it can be discussed and kept track of.

    - Its own thread on the Almost Recommended board, where it can be discussed and rated.

    - Its own thread on the For Review board, where it can be reviewed, rated, and considered for the library.

Here's where I get a bit fuzzy - once something has a rating, does that move it between boards? Does something with a reasonable rating with its own Almost Recommended thread automatically get bumped to the For Review board, or the library, or neither? Does something rated 1-2 starts in Almost Recommended go to the Trash Bin? (and is that an actual board, or just a euphemism for "deleted"?)

Generally, threads always move when the rating changes (or at least they do every so often when we take the time to work ourselves through the forums). >= 3.5 Library, >= 2.5 Almost Recced/Recycling, anything else Trash Bin (and yes, that does exist, google it).

And you create the threads, as you always do, in the Review Board.

Really, nothing has changed except that the standards for the Review Board have been lowered a little. Everything else is the same.

And IBG, the same thing I said in regards to the Questions thread. If everyone dumps everything in one thread, we can close the rest of the forum, and just exist as that one thread. It's stupid and messy as hell. If someone finds a story they want to recommend, make a new thread, and if they cbf to do that because of sheer laziness, then good riddance.

Note that you still can use this thread -- e.g. for stories that are brand new and too short to go through the Review process. But use your head when you decide where to post. It's a common-sense-thing, and I should hope we have more of that than other boards.

Personally I think this attitude is awful. We aren't paying people a finder's fee to submit fics, if even one fic that would have been posted here doesn't get submitted because people aren't comfortable with the review process then that's one fic too many, IMO.

I don't understand what was wrong with this thread to begin with, most stuff submitted here did not end up in the library anyway and people were clearly content to submit whatever they happened to be reading without having to care about it. If others thought it was library material then there's nothing stopping them submitting it themselves afterward.

I'm pretty sure I've ready under 5 fics out of For Review in the past year, I can't recall a single one to be honest but I won't say 0 in case I'm overlooking something. However I'm dead certain that I've read atleast 20 or so fics from here.

At the end of the day it's not my decision to make though so /shrug

So you barely read anything posted for review last year? That's probably because we rarely got readable submissions. But did you use the library? Did you look for older stories?

The problem with this thread is that you can't tag and filter stories, you can't follow a story discussion, and everything that is posted in here is forgotten after two weeks. Basically, we could implement an auto-delete function that only keeps the last fifty posts or so. DLP-features like the library list and the recommended stories won't work with this thread, because you can't single out stories posted in here.

If we lose a few lazy members over this, then that's fine by me.

Losing members isn't what its about, its about losing stories posted. The thread had its problems as you mentioned, but it had its benefits that might be lost now.

What bennies? Yeah, sure, it's great to have a central place to just talk about all sorts of different stories, but if you want that then you may as well hop on IRC. I've heard it's where all the cool kids go these days anyway.

Past that, this thread sucked giant bags of dicks. It's a bloated, impractical blob of a thing that isn't easily searchable. I've basically given up on trying to find certain stories that got mentioned ages ago and were buried under all the blubber. Same for good discussion. I could go through everything in the list, or every page in all the threads, but fuck that nonsense.

This thread's only advantage was the above mentioned central dumping ground, and lets make no mistake, that's exactly what this thread has become. Everyone comes in here and shits out stories that run the gamut of quality, and then no one posts the good ones in 'For Review'. This thread was intended to be a filter, but has become a sceptic tank, and a clogged one at that.

As for losing stories posted, I don't buy it. Minion's right in that it doesn't take that long to fill out the standard prompt and click a submit button. People who don't are lazy.

Unless this is about you not wanting to make original threads for stories you enjoy because reasons. Just remember that (1) you're anonymous and (2) you're posting Harry Potter fan-fiction on a Harry Potter fan-fiction forum. You're in good company, and no one will care if you post garbage for more than, maybe, a second.

And I doubt that Minion or another mod is going to jump down your throat if you post a story in this thread that you really aren't sure on. That's part of the point, to have a place where people can rec stuff that they honestly don't know if it's good. A page or so of discussion about it will clear things up, and then someone can make a thread for it. Easy.

I didn't post stories anyways. I didnt find the dumping ground difficult. I find it preferrable to having less recs (remains to be seen whether that will actually be the case.)
