Other than Snape, the only hint we have is this from Snape's memories:
She appears to know someone called Mary but that's about it.

Downloading Fanfiction. Flagfic used to be my go-to option. When it went down I eventually found Ficsave, which worked for me up until a few weeks ago. At first I thought it was just a bad connection or something, but I tried again just now and it still doesn't work - it gets to the 'wait' period then never downloads.

Question: Is there another alternative to Flagfic & Ficsave? If not, does Ficsave work for the rest of you or is something screwy with my browser?

Edit: Apologies if this doesn't belong in this thread, since the initial post does mention HP canon, but since it's fanfic-related I thought it better to put it here than in the 'RL Questions' thread.

    Assuming it's allowed:

I use FanfictionDownloader. It's a offline tool, but a tiny download anyway.

I don't know about any other options, though, so there may well be reasons to use something else.

It works. I tried chrome, mozilla, and explorer and downloading in all formats. PDF took longest. It could just take some time before it's completed. A story 47k words long took 10s for mobi and 30s for pdf.

There was one other tool for downloading stories, but I forgot where it is. I will edit this post if I find it.

edit: Found it. Finally. Here it is.

If you use calibre, it has a fanfiction downloaded plugin. Also, once you have added a fanfic to the library, you can select all fanfics and click the fanfic button and it downloads only the ones that have updated.

Was just watching the first movie on TV, and something came to me. How did Ollivander find out that Tom Riddle is Voldemort? When he sells Harry his wand, he mentions that he sold the brother wand to Voldemort, but to know that he'd have to know that Voldemort is Tom Riddle.

It's possible that Voldemort was also known as Tom Riddle back when he started calling himself Voldemort. I don't have the book with me, but according book 6, pensieve memory of Tom's DADA application, Riddle already had companions in one of the bars who called themselves Death Eaters. This was back when he looked human, except for a flash of red in his eyes that Harry might have imagined. There was likely a transition field between 'talented student' and 'so scary people flinch at the very name'
That or Olivander saw the wand in a photo and/or is a fan of anagrams, although I think the previous option is likelier.

Tom Riddle being Voldemort may not have been common knowledge but it wasn't a secret either. His rebirth ritual took place in the graveyard where his father was buried , so we can safely assume that he shared the knowledge willingly with Pettigrew at the very least.
Also in HBP when he had applied for a teaching post he wasn't trying to hide the fact that he was Voldemort.
People of his generation and above were aware of his real identity and later generations probably didn't bother not until Harry at least.

Ollivander also would have been working every day within walking distance of where Riddle worked after Hogwarts, and Borgin & Burke's is where his real transition to Voldemort started/ramped up anyway. That and Ollivander was about the next best thing to Dumbledore himself in canon. He had a way of knowing things.

Do we have any idea how dangerou Fluffy was? I don’t remember seeing a Cerberus profile in Fantastic Beasts or anywhere else. Was he as dangerous as, say, a dragon? If there is nothing on canon I will post this in another place.

No, there was nothing in Fantastic Beasts. However, you might just look into PS: Basically, it has three heads and bites readily. (Snape, for example). It seems reasonable to assume it would tear you to pieces in want of any deterrent.

    Edit:
But then again, it is Hagrid. I guess the bottom line is you don't want either in your backyard.

I think I read somewhere that JKR explained why Crouch Jr. kept Moody alive during GoF as "Polyjuice doesn't work on dead people."

Can someone confirm this? Also, if that's correct, does the person have to be alive still when the potion is used, or just when the bits of the person are harvested?

Basically, I have an idea for a scene where someone is kidnapped, and then the kidnapper shows up Polyjuiced as the kidnap victim (drama!) to prove that the victim is still alive. Does this suss out with canon?

I tried a quick google search, but couldn't find a reference. Anyone else?

What can be inferred from Moody being kept alive, I think, is that at the very least the person has to be alive while something from them was taken. Taure had a differing opinion earlier in the thread, though. And in fact, so did I myself here. I can't decide if I still agree with it, which should tell all about the validity of any answer ;)

The only other relevant thing I can think of here is that we see magic being affected by the death of its caster. In the same vein, you might build a reasonable theory stating that people revert back to themselves the moment the person they polyjuiced into dies, but it naturally lacks direct evidence.

Thus, I think you're free to decide as you want without contradicting canon. Edit: Just keep it consistent within the story, of course.

Is it fanon or canon that Wizards used to dump criminals through the veil before switching to Azkaban?
Edit: sorry, bad phrasing. I read somewhere that before Azkaban was established, criminals were dumped through the veil. I can't remember if it is canon or fanon. If it is canon, can you please provide a quote?

There is nothing in the books about the veil being used for anything. In fact, I don't think there is any history about the veil in the books at all. What is known is that it is an archway in the Death Chamber, and that Harry and Luna can hear voices coming from it, and that a body that passes through it disappears.

Does Wizarding Britain have prisons other than Azkaban? Prisons for crimes too severe for mere fines, but not severe enough for imprisonment near dementors?

Probably not. Sentences look like anything between several weeks and life, and IIRC defendants are also kept in remand there, as seen in the GoF trials that Harry saw in the Pensieve. Mundungus Fletcher was sent there for theft (as well as impersonating an Inferius).
