It's irritating when every fic with Daphne Greengrass in it refers to her as an Ice Princess or an Ice Queen. Was she called that in the book? Was she even described as having that sort of personality? I can't think of a single Daphne fic other than maybe Unatoned that doesn't called her an Ice Queen/Princess.

 

I think she was only mentioned by name once in the entire series tbh. Ice queen is a fandom creation, probably one of the worst things it has ever created tbh.

I think the worst thing created is the ravng lunatic Luna. While I admit I love Rorschacs stuff, but the Luna in Larceny just makes me want to punch stuff. Very few write Luna as a person, not as an all seeing Seer, or Crazy theory Person, I-have-crazy-solution-to-everything person...

 

So a deconstructed fanon Daphne becomes...sorta like fanon Luna. Hmm, that makes sense.

 

She's practically a non-entity in the books, so fanon can do with her the fuck it wants, basically.

 

It's an inference based on apocrypha; JKR's list of the original 40 students in Harry's year included Queenie Greengrass, with marks to indicate she was Slytherin and pureblood. The character's sole mention is when Hermione is called for one of the OWL exams.

Everything beyond that is fanon.

 

This is a fandom that created Severitus, Veela!Malfoys, MagicMenGetPreggers, EvilGeniusAt11!Ron, EvilAndOmniscientUntilHarryDoesThings!Dumbledore, EveryMagicalLordshipEver!Harry and a whole stinking list of other things.

I'm gonna give a cliché character interpretation a pass on the 'one of the worst things' list.

It's up there in a different way to those things. Those things are ridiculous and messed up. The ice queen thing is just dumb and is always a part of bad writing.

 

Evil Weasleys. Don't forget the most ridiculous fanon cliche ever invented. I can at least understand where Manipulative Dumbledore comes from. When the fuck did the Weasleys turn out to be evil? Seriously, I do not have the slightest clue when Ron aspired to be a Death Eater, Molly conspired to steal Harry's elusive wealth and Ginny made up her five year plan to seduce Harry with Love Potions.

 

Evil Weasleys is usually synonymous with Weasley bashing. I think the whole thing is BS and a sign of bad writing.

 

While the idea itself is really poor I believe it's a combination of a lot of people hating Ginny - rightly so imo - as well as a misunderstanding and exaggeration of Ron's behaviour in the 4th and 7th books, topped off by the fact that frankly Molly is quite irritating with how controlling she can seem.

It's just a really poor way of handling the actual problems the author has with canon. No need to explain, justify or 'fix' their behaviour if you can just call them evil and be done with it.

 

Didn't Molly take some money out of Harry's vault once? Merlin knows how she got in his vault though, even if she has the key I doubt the goblins would just let her take money out of someone else's vault, they seem quite strict in canon.

 

Yeah she did, not sure how she did that I think it's just a case of inconsistency in canon rather than anything malicious.

 

Are we seriously going to debate whether Molly Weasley is evil here on DLP? In 2015, no less? Fuck, this disease is even more widespread than I thought.

Evul Weasleys is right up there with mpreg. I'm pretty sure it's biologically impossible. Weasleys are hardwired to be the good guys. It would take extreme AU to make Ron a DE and by then you might as well use another character.

I only ever saw one example of an Evil!Weasley done in an interesting and non-cringeworthy way.

It was Percy.

 

Could you provide a link? Not disputing your point at all - just want to confirm if it's the same fic I vaguely remember.

One really annoying 'plot device' is when authors build up a character (usually background or OC) fairly decently, only to stuff them in a fridge so that the protagonist (usually Harry) can benefit from the power-boosting Elixir of Angst. HP and the Fifth Element really peeved me with this one.

 

I can see Ron being an asshole to Harry if he pretty much told Ron to get stuffed on the train because he had no tolerance for him, but other than that, nothing.
